It sounds like you are describing more of a Tech Lead role as opposed to a Staff role. Staff roles are not usually tied to any one feature team, but instead operate outside of and across feature teams to mentor engineers, establish best practices and implement shared tooling to optimize developer productivity and/or business processes. The Staff role is usually responsible for engineering wide technology updates and working on distributed systems. I suppose this can vary from company to company so take this with a grain of salt. You are right: this depends very much on the company and the respective career ladder. I recommend reading the Staff Engineer archetypes Will Larson summarised: staffeng.com/guides/staff-archetypes. What I describe is one of those archetypes - and yes, this is also called Tech Lead or Lead Developer in certain companies. What you describe I also experienced being called Principle Engineer, sometimes even Architect. Maybe I should mention that the experience I talk about has been in a company of 500-1000 people overall. The bigger the company, roles and levels will shift.
