A genuine great of the game. I honestly haven’t seen a better goalkeeper in my lifetime. Kahn and Neuer close but nobody had the presence and consistency of this man. A pioneer of the game too with the type of saves he made.

I watched this yesterday and i totally enjoyed listening to to Peter, the way he dissected and explained how a goalkeeper can take initiative rather the wait for the striker to make a decision for him was completely spot on. Being one of the best goalkeeper in the history of EPL gives what he says that much more credibility. He seemed like such a great person as well :)

A lot of Peters close saves would seem unorthodox but to those familiar with handball a classic handball keeper moves - and the basic strategy is to be on top of things and reduce the angles to eliminate the shooter from being efficient. Trivia: know handball is not a big sport i the UK but it originates from DK and popularity-wise it's probably on par with foodball. Should you follow handball in general you'd know Danes are not doing too shappy on titles nor goalkeepers!

@@madsnygaard6444 interestingly enough it’s very much the same for De Gea. A lot of handball experience in his youth. Interesting interview with a handball coach after his incredible performance vs Spurs at the start of Solskjaer’s reign where the coach explained many of the saves/blocks he made with his legs actually all had specific terms in handball like ‘the lateral block’ or something etc. I would say that De Gea’s style has been revolutionary for goalkeeping as when he entered saves with feet were still seen as ‘unorthodox’ but they aren’t so much anymore. De Gea has brought them much more into wider play/acceptance

The best player of Euro 92 tournament imo. He and Cantona in 95/96 season, took it upon themselves to win the double for United. And who could ever forget the saves against Bergkamp in F.A cup semis the handball keeping save against Zamorano in UCL quaterfinals in 98/99 season. I put Schemichel as Fergie's best buy followed by Keane, Cantona, Cristiano etc. Manchester is and has always been Red.

Love the question Carra asks Schmeichel at the end. “Is every keeper a good shot stopper?” Said it for years that there’s something wrong if you’re a keeper and not a good shot stopper. First time I’ve ever heard anyone else say it.
@gnawershreth
@gnawershreth 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's simply down to people talking about different things. To some people a good shot stopper means they're better than other good keepers at shot stopping, while for others it'd include both of those goalkeepers regardless of one of them being better than the other one at shot stopping. Obviously they're both good shot stoppers if they're playing professional football but one can still be better at that part of the game than the other, while the other may be better in the air, at distribution or whatever. It's not like all keepers are equally good at shot stopping even though they're obviously all good at it.

What sets the good goalies from the best ones, and this applies to defenders also, is their ability to maintain concentration thoughout the game. For goalies, you have to be able to anticipate what goes on in the final third of the pitch, because you need to be in the right space at the right time, in order to close down the opposing strikers as quickly as possible, and part of that is maintaining concentration. And how quickly and accurately the goalies can distribute the ball is linked to concentration, and knowing where your players are gonna be, say, when you take the ball from set-piece. I have to slightly disagree though with Peter, in that goalies need to fundamentally be excellent shot stoppers. The best shot stopping is different from being an excellent goalie; the best shot stoppers are the ones that are strong, quick and agile enough to be able to correct themselves from being out of position, out of step with the game for that split second, because the game moves so fast at times that it's difficult to anticipate, and goalies - no matter how much concetration and anticipation of the game - will often find themselves out of phase with the movement of the players and where the ball is being played, because they are never gonna be faster than the ball. The best goalies tend to be the best shot stoppersn for that matter.

@Roy-si8ne
@Roy-si8ne 6 жыл бұрын
Goalkeeper Videos of course when you're starting out young, it is necessary to work on your technique to get the basics of being a goalie right...much like a foundation which deals with say, in game scenarios like distribution and parrying the ball away to an area where it isn't followed up by another player, positioning and so on...also, it helps your concentration and helps you as a player understand what exactly you are and should be doing. However, once you've got the foundations nailed down you can definitely go ahead and develop your own style of keeping which is either you save with your feet more than your hands or if you prefer to hold onto the ball rather than punch it away. Coaches will look to help give you a general feel for the ball which is very important in an actual match rather than a training session...which helps the keeper be more confident, command his area, dominate the striker or organise his defence.

Well. maybe being italian there is an overemphasis of how it looks. Peter is Danish and he and his son have Viking goalkeeper mentality somthing I've always felt was based on raw skill, training and courage. Both of them own the pitch and wont accept less. Part of being the best is evidently the basic physical ability, training like crazy which evidently implies improving techniques over and over - make no mistake about that.

I hate keepers who dont catch the ball as often as possible. By catching it you take the pressure off the team where as punching it out the pressure keeps coming onto the team
@Cashback13
@Cashback13 6 жыл бұрын
It entirely depends on whether it is easier to catch it or punch it. Sometimes you see keepers try and catch then then should punch or palm the cross away. David James and Grobbelear were guilty of this often and concended silly goals as a result. But if the Goalie thinks that there is danger that he might drop it or not collect it cleanly he has no choice but to punch. what happens after that is not his fault as he's done his job. I only get annoyed when they punch a slow cross that no attacker is challenging for or is anywhere near the keeper. Other than that it's their judgement call as to whether they come or stay or punch or leave for defenders to clear.
