I love your approach to teaching piano technology. The Piano Technicians Guild requires in their tuning test a 2 octave aural temperament. They say the reason is because the tuner has to also show they can hear their tuning. This is NOT a good way to show one can hear their tunings as this is primarily about beat speed counting and comparing something useless in the treble section. Back in 1996 was the famous "Great Chicago Tune-off "where two world class piano technicians challenged each other. One tuned exclusively by ear and the other with an etd. IM planning an upcoming video exposing all this archaic tuning requirements in order to be considered a competent tuner by the Piano Technicians Guild. There are better aural checks that show one can hear their tuning work.

YES! I know Jim Coleman personally and i'd love to see that.... was it Jim SR. or Jim JR? The PTG is just not able to admit that their requirements are not right and they are hurting the industry overall... I await your video.

I just need to fix my mom’s piano it’s a heirloom and I know how to play it and it means a lot to my mom that it is in good condition.

Do you teach repair also?
@apexpiano
@apexpiano 4 ай бұрын
Yes! The course includes a section where I show you all the field repairs and I’m adding to this section often as you go through the mentorship. You will know how to repair all types of issuers with uprights and grand pianos.

I did the American School of Piano tuning. Learned a lot, but it was mostly correspondence and no hands-on. Nobody to talk to in person or ask questions.

My father took a piano tuning course I believe he became one in 1969 he did it for years up until I guess 2014 timeframe he was really good e tune for Tom T Hall he tuned I mean that's just one time but still it was neat and he 1 piano tuning he did it was a Korean pianist or and he hit his head that's the best piano tuning he'd ever had dad was really took his time and you could talk to him while he was tuning except during the also he said one time I used to go on jobs with him and it's really amazing he too it was his love really as far as work goes he did other things Yet piano tuning was his love and obviously work-related this when I mean mom he loves mom the most yet mom always supported him he was one of the few piano tuners in the country who could make certain of his own heart he come in while we were watching TV and and everything he said look and he's holed up a hammerhead you have to pain I know some of the parts just from working with him a bit he'd have the pin and fell and he let me do certain things like glue things on the piano I'm sorry I'm not a tuner so I have to say that he lived out everything that all the parts inside the piano he lived it out and you need to call that the guts to the piano he called him and he called himself a father who could do all those things makes me wish I had a gift for it cuz of course he tune by ear and he did have instruments as well yet he mostly tune by ear he was say he would I miss him just talking about this thank you for letting me share😅😊

Are piano techs becoming more or less in demand?
@apexpiano
@apexpiano 3 жыл бұрын
O M they are becoming MORE in demand and there are less of them. So the good ones have so much work and can make such good money in the trade.

@@apexpiano thank you for responding bro... Im 22 though, I mean over the next 30-40 years is it a good career choice? I talked to 3 local techs in Pittsburgh and they said the same as you, but I don't think they're thinking about the future so much... Cause churches are dying out, schools are using electric keyboards more, and in the past 10 years electric keyboards are on the rise its still a new thing! So do you still support getting in the field? Think about the future, im a young dude, not 30 40 or 60... Ive been contemplating this for a month now!!!

O M to me it makes sense. I know techs making over 60K a year working part time. Like 15-20 hours a week. You can’t make that king of money in almost any other service gig. Keyboards are popular BUT... and this is a big but..... the number of pinao technicians is shrinking so fast and pianos are never going away. There are so many of them. The new piano Morley is smaller than ever but pianos last about 100 years. There are so many pianos form the 60s and 70s that need serviced. Do you have a better idea for a career? I’ve looked at many industries and this one is by far the most lucrative in my opinion. I also know some techs that have full tome careers and still make money tuning when they want to on evenings and weekends. They do very well. So the skill is something you’ll never regret learning.

I find that although it is a shrinking field, my competition is less than half of what it was 25 years ago. People may already have acoustic pianos It's a buyers market people can get a very good instrument at low cost , even free. These instruments can also be very sentimental so people will want to restore and maintain them for that reason. I find a big majority of my customers are upper income so they have the ability to pay to restore and maintain these instruments.

I think the opposite because the tuner should first focus on hammer technique ,setting the pin and tuning beetles unisons.
