It is important to recognize that there are very few full time applied sport psychology positions - only a few hundred in the USA. I wrote the following paper to more widely communicate this fact so students understand how difficult it is to find a career in this field: Martin, J. (2019). Is the profession of sport psychology an illusion?. Kinesiology Review, 9(2), 92-103.

Hi Phil, found you channel a couple weeks ago and have been absolutely grinding through your videos. I have a BAH in sociology & minor in health but I’m returning to school to hopefully become a professional in the field of psychology as I’ve discovered is my passion. Your videos have brought me so much clarity & have saved me a bunch of time researching through countless sites of information online, I appreciate the brevity & genuine delivery you continuously provide. Been training in the gym for years & am also very passionate about physical therapy & conditioning so I sports psychology is a great mix for me cause I’m not so great with the ‘hard sciences’. Question for you: does a sports psych masters allow you to do therapy / counselling does it only allow you to do coaching? I want to minimize schooling (time & cost) & start gaining experience asap cause I feel like that’s whats key to become a top sports psych but if I’m better off pursuing a PhD or PsyD in clinical or counselling with a CMPC to be more valuable at the professional mental consultant level then I certainly will pursue that path no problem. Additionally, is the counselling path over the strength & conditioning / kinesiology path the way to go in becoming a sports psych the way to go to make myself more valuable as a top candidate in the profession or does it just generally depend on my interests & which one I’m more willing to fall back on or expand from down the line? Sorry for the long message, any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Love your video content, keep it up!

Hi great questions!! A sports psych masters does NOT allow you to do therapy. It gets confusing in the sports psych world. The masters gives you the education needed to get further certification as a CMPC professional sports consultant but it does not give you the training to do therapy with athletes. What a lot of people will do is either 1) get a sports psych masters 2) then get a counseling masters degree 3) get licensed as a LPC licensed professional counselor 4) Use your sports psych masters to make you eligible for the CMPC and get certified Then you have 2 masters degrees, one for sports psych and one for clinical therapy. The other option is to just get a masters in sports psych, get certified, and ONLY do coaching with athletes, not therapy

The other alternative as you mentioned is to pursue a doctorate psyd/phd in clinical or counseling psychology. There are some good programs. I think there's one in texas. Check out University of North Texas. Their program I believe prepares you for the CMPC (double check this) and once you're finished you can take the test and become certified. If you don't go to a sport psych psyd/phd program you may have to do extra courses while in the program to get the courses you need for the CMPC and also an extra practicum to get the clinical experience to be eligible for the CMPC

Here's what I've learned, PhD/PsyD that have a CMPC are extremely valuable! The ones I know are working with professional teams. Many teams want their candidate to have excellent experience in the therapy/counseling world. They already have plenty of strength and conditioning coaches. Just my opinion but I think any way that you can combine counseling/therapy with a sports psychology certificate like the CMPC would make anyone extremely valuable. Depending on what your interests are those could make you a unique candidate as well. If you are wanting to know more the CMPC has a directory of sports psychologists in your area that have a CMPC certification that you could contact and ask them questions. That's what I did and it was very helpful! Best of luck!

Thank you so much Phil. My dream has been to do sports psychology and i want to start the journey next year. Am in Kenya and unfortunately our universities don't have this course. I also have to start from a diploma level. Please advise which diploma courses will allow me to do sports psychology at Degree level. I just came across your teachings and am excited. I can't wait for more revelations. Thank you.

Hello! Thank you for the support! Unfortunately I'm unsure about the courses provided in the universities in Kenya. What's been helpful for some students is reaching out to the programs that they are interested in applying to for graduate school and asking them which courses they suggest or would meet the requirements for getting into their program. Hope that's helpful, best of luck!

I just graduated with a B.A. in Psychology with Honors and B.A. in Public Health with Honors, and I have two years of research experience in health psychology. I am interested in pursing a PsyD in Clinical Psychology, but I am not sure if I need to pursue a masters first in order to get accepted into a PsyD program? If I were to pursue a masters, I would pursue a masters in Marriage & Family Therapy, but I don't want to spend $40-$50,000 on a masters simply to make myself more competitive for a PsyD program. But I also don't want to have to take another gap year if I don't get accepted into a PsyD program this upcoming cycle. What do you recommend?

Hi, great questions! A masters isn't required for most PsyD/PhD programs in the states. A lot of students will skip the masters and go straight into the doctorate, saving time and money. Although, the one true benefit of a masters is more experience, whether research or clinical, and it does make you more competitive for grad programs as well as future internships or job sites even though it's not required. It really depends on the person. Some people will contact the schools before they apply to see if a masters is recommended as some grad programs might favor masters more than others. If your list of schools doesn't require or recommend it, it might be in your best interest if you already have a strong application (GRE, GPA, LOR, etc.) to apply or if they do recommend it follow their guidelines. Whatever schools recommend is what I suggest and if you have a clear list of schools then contacting them to see what they might say might help you make a decision. Hope that helps!

A masters in applied psychology is typically focused on research and not clinical practice. If you're looking to become a sports psychologists masters in general psychology, counseling psychology, kinesology, sports psychology, and then added certification can help. Hope that helps!

HELP! I have my masters in athletic administration.. I want to get into sports psychology so I must get my Doctorate. Do I have to study clinical psych? What should I choose! Grand Canyon University has a performance psych program phd but is not APA. Advice?
@philsguidetopsyd

APA accreditation tends to be a highly recommended feature in terms of obtaining future internships, post docs and jobs. Other than clinical psych programs there are also counseling psychology programs. One that comes to mind is in North Texas. Whether you have a masters and tag on a certification like the cmpc or having a doctorate and working through an internship and postdoc for sport psychology there are many paths to get to the same goal, it just depends weight out the pros and cons of each option. Hope that’s helpful!
