@@trihardFTW - It took just short of a week I'd say, in stops and starts with drafts and revisions and such? I draw fairly fast to be honest, but the bringing together of something like this takes time and Brainbook did lots of amazing editing and such which speeded things up for me (also did the script and audio)! I've been doing medical illustrations for a number of years now - first drawings in this field about a decade ago now. I'm just completing a postgraduate in Medical Art (through the Medical Artists' Education Trust - www.maet.org.uk ) and that's a part time course that's taken me about 3 years to work through all the coursework! There's two places you can study this in the UK specifically - Dundee and London so I recommend going to an open day for the courses in these two cities and seeing if you like it?

My mom and family members have many brain problems such as epilepsy, and I have seen what those can do to a family as it has torn mine apart, so for years I’ve wanted to be a neurosurgeon to help families like mine so they don’t end up badly and I want to save people. I’m not in this for the money as it is a nice bonus but I want to help people and I will work my hardest to achieve my goal no matter the cost and amount of dedication and hard work. Keenan - in answer to your question about where does most of the medical work come from, it's really mixed I'd say. My work tends to be around patient engagement and staff training/education and outreach, but some medical artists work 1:1 with surgeons doing surgical sequences; others are hired by NHS departments to do all visual comms for that hospital; others do textbooks and there's growing group of artists working entirely in 3D/app generated work. It's shifted and evolved a lot in the last decade as tech has leapt forward. It's a really exciting area of work to be part of, as you can work in collaboration with fascinating teams. Thanks for your question!

As a neurosurgeon, don't you think the 8-13 year long process puts many people off? And apart from neurosurgery, is there any other speciality that you would've liked to go into instead?
@Brainbook
@Brainbook 5 жыл бұрын
I think sometimes it might, but a lot of surgical specialties have a long training process. I think that if you really want to do something and genuinely love it, time is not an issue. It's a marathon not a sprint so it can be very emotionally draining. And yes, sometimes people quit quite early on. If I didn't do neurosurgery I'd probably want to do either vascular surgery (they have a lot in common) or psychiatry!!

@@realzhella6817 A neurologist is a physician, a neurosurgeon is a surgeon. They will usually treat the same patients working together but each have different training pathways. Switching between the two mid-training is quite awkward I believe. With regards to your original question, your salary depends on who employs you; if you're in the NHS, your salary will depend on your experience as a consultant, not necessarily your specialty.

Thank you for all your help going through your job as a Neurosurgeon! Everything is quite amazing. May I ask you which of these institutions bellow do you recommend the most for doing an clinical elective in Neurosurgeon? 1) UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery; 2) Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust; 3) Cambridge University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust - Addenbrooke’s Hospital; 4) KCL - Guy's Hospital, King's College Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital (not sure in which of these institutions the Neurosurgery elective takes place). I am a final year medical student from Brazil wishing to undertake the residency program of Neurosurgery in the UK, mostly in London. Thank you for your time and patience!!

Hi Alex a question has just been triggered in my brain excuse the connection to your speciality. Is colloidal silver used in hospitals , and could it be used for Sepsis? Just as a footnote my niece has been accepted to Keele Medical School subject to her A level results. If she suggests an interest in neurosurgery I will give her your link.

It is used. We use them in silver impregnated brain drains (EVD). It's used as an anti septic, but not used to treat sepsis itself. Good luck to your niece. I hope she has a smashing time at med school and thank you!

Some people are born with the capability to change people's lives and fix their health. One day you could be lying down on surgery table with a neurosurgeon operating you. If you don't have the drive to study and work in this field, don't comment this. The world needs people like these surgeons. If you're not up for that then that's fine.
