A humorous look at how some worshippers behave or misbehave in church.
By highlighting poor behaviour observed amongst church-goers, ’Radharc’ offers an entertaining take on appropriate conduct for church.
Parishioners are shown arriving late, blessing themselves incorrectly, praying too loudly, standing at the back of the church, or even chatting and smoking outside the church itself.
Of course no-one ever behaves like this in your church. But just make sure to keep it that way, not a place for bad manners and distraction but a place for reverence and prayer.
‘Radharc’, a series specialising in religious programming, was produced for RTÉ by Radharc, an independent production company run by Catholic priests and lay staff. ‘Radharc’ can be translated to English as ‘view’ or ‘panorama’.
Co-founders Fr Joe Dunn and Fr Desmond Forristal who had received training in television production in New York in 1959 gathered around them a team of like minded priests with creative talent.
The ‘Radharc’ team made their first production in 1960 in Donegal, a short film about customs relating to St Brigid’s Day. The first programme in the ‘Radharc’ series for RTÉ was broadcast on 12 January 1962.
Between 1961 and 1996 the ‘Radharc’ team would produce over 400 films in Ireland and 75 countries worldwide. The films dealt with human rights, injustice, faith, religion, persecution, struggles against oppressive regimes, famine, and Christian heritage.
The popular series ended production in 1996 after the death of Fr Joe Dunn.
This episode of ‘Radharc’ was broadcast on 15 September 1967.

*We're all at the Latin Mass.* In the parish I go, there are between 70-90 young adults of 18 to 30 years-old, and dozens of children. The Novus Ordo mass is dying _because_ it lacks piety and most of its priests are *poorly educated in the faith:* they no longer seek to save souls... rather... they seek to save themselves from being criticized by the world. The youth that still cares about the faith seek truthfulness, clarity, honesty, shepherds who will not shy away from telling them when their sins are grave, and how to amend their lives in order to save their souls.

I've been to mass in Ireland. Number one, I needed subtitles because I didn't understand a word the priest was saying and if I didn't know the mass by heart I would have been lost. The other thing was there's no holding back when it's time to go up for the Eucharist, it's every man woman and child for himself. If you hesitate you're going to be pushed into the gutter while the little old ladies elbow their way up to be first in line. Plus, they don't sing, and they don't even have a pretense of singing cuz there are no hymnals in the pews. No matter though. I'd be thrilled to be back over in Ireland attending Mass.

Hilarious and so accurate. That brings back memories of when I used to go to mass. As a child I had to go, of course. On the walk to mass my mother was great at spotting an invisible bit of dirt on my face or knees. Out would come the handkerchief which she'd lick before grabbing me and scrubbing me furiously with it as if I was indelibly marked. Then, sufficiently clean again apparently, I was marched up to the front of the church. Very convenient for getting communion but it meant you were one of the last out of the church after mass. And you daren't risk showing displeasure at being stuck in a heaving mass of adults for fear of getting a good smack on the bottom which your friends just might see. Smack bottoms were great entertainment so long as you weren't the one getting smacked. As I got into my mid teens the trick was to get to church just before the offertory because if you were any later, you were demed to have missed mass and you'd have to go to a later one or commit a mortal sin by not bothering.

Anyway, the obnoxious would be thieves started to ask for money. I told them no and to leave me alone, the biggest lug of them started yelling 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry' over and over. No one did a thing. Kinda cowardly imo I did say something to the lug but said it quietly.

@a.t.c.3862
@a.t.c.3862 Жыл бұрын
@Adolph Paffen I was using sarcasm. Neither the Lord nor his earliest disciples spoke Latin, but more likely Aramaic, Hebrew and maybe some Greek, but certainly not Latin. For a genuinely Traditional Mass, we would have to celebrate it in Aramaic / Hebrew, as part of a meal held in someone's home, reclining on couches, with no altar rails, missals, incense, mitres or Gregorian chant....
@adolphCat
@adolphCat Жыл бұрын
@@a.t.c.3862 You need to be careful even with over the top sarcasm, because some radical Traditionalist Roman Catholics actually believe that what they call the Tradtional Latin Mass was celebrated by the Apostels. They aren't aware of the numerous Ancient Litugical Rites of both East and West. Actually, unless their families are from Rome or its surrounding areas their ancestors of even a few 100 years ago would not have worshiped using what they call the Traditional Latin Mass. England for instance used the Sarum Rite before the Protestant Refomation. Nor are they aware of people like Sts. Cyril and Methodius who a little over 1000 years ago translated with the blessing of the Pope the Liturgy in Slavic for the benefit of their missionary efforts in Slavic Lands. Yes, at the time Sts. Cyril and Methodius were opposed by the German Bishops who didn't like that the Liturgy was being translated into a Slavic Language. Many Traditional Roman Catholics aren't even aware that in Rome the Liturgy was usually celebrated in Greek for the 1st 300 years or so. The early Church adapted the Ancient Liturgies of the Jerusalem Temple and Ancient Liturgies of the Synagogue for Christian worship. It is interesting to study Ancient Liturgies of East and West, Liturgie of St. James, St. Basil the Great, the Coptic Liturgies of Egypt, the Maronite Liturgies of Labanon, the Liturgies of the Ethiopia, the Ancient Liturgies of the French Church etc.

Arianrhod Hyde Latin was one of the three languages on the Cross of our dying Lord, so it is intimately tied to salvation history. Moreover, maintaining the original language, and the original *sense* of Scripture is not necessarily the same thing. The Latin Vulgate translated by St. Jerome, who had access to the very best manuscripts at the time in the 5th Century was the very first Bible made shortly after the canon was established by the Church after a series of Councils. This, along with the Latin liturgy of the Latin West, cooperates with Scripture to preserve the sense, meaning, and right belief within the life of the Church that is traditioned from generation to generation. Attending the Latin Mass plugs you into that Tradition, the transmission of Revelation in both its written and unwritten forms, in a very deep, immersive way. After all, how we pray affects how we believe and vice versa.

@@joshuareagan8819 I'll take your point about the latin vulgate being a good translation of the new testament, but the Latin on the cross was surely written by and for the Romans who were murdering him, and while I assume the Latin mass could be useful for understanding the historical experiences of western catholics, I'm not interested in maintaining that tradition. Enjoy yourselves I guess.
