Following on from episode 3, James works through the thinning phases with antler soft hammers on a tricky piece of flint that throws up lots of surprises! This episode focusses on platform prep when using an antler soft hammer and how to improve your thinning flakes using the surface topography. The aim is a biface blank that could be used as a spear head, dagger or knife blank. These blanks were made and cached (or hoarded) in many cultures around the world.

Another great video! I have been flintknapping for some time but I'm really bad at explaining the process to others, your videos really helps me get better at this because of your excellent way of talking about the process 👍

Since flint is harder for me to find here across the pond, I’d love to go thru your shard pile…whopee!

I think the intruding sounds were more problematic for you. I could not hear them from my computer. Thanks for a great video!

Do your pre=strike 'heart in the mouth' moments, get fewer with experience , and if so are you aware of getting braver in taking risks for perfect results ?
