A bind-off, sometimes also cast-off, is an essential knitting technique that secures the stitches of the last row and keeps your knitting from unraveling. In this video, I will show you the basic bind-off method and a couple of tips and tricks for a neater last stitch or a stretchier edge.
On top of that, I will show you all together 10 alternative ways to finish your knitting. I start with a couple of stretchy bind-offs and then it's all about beautiful techniques that are either invisible or very ornamental. In the last part of this video, I talk about a couple of more uncommon bind-offs that bring something new to the table.
Most important, you have to know that there is not only one way to bind-off knitting and I hope this video will show you all the options you have. Depending on your preferences and your project, you get to pick the one you like most. And I guess that's what you have to consider most when you ask about how to bind off when knitting - there's not one technique that covers it all! So, I hope you enjoy this video!
I always want you to know that the needle size and the tension you use to bind off knitting is an equally as important factors and something you can use to determine the stretchiness (and neatness) of the edge.

Thanks for the video, well done as usual. I bind (cast) off using Jenny's surprisingly stretchy, but I trade the knitting needle in my right hand with a crochet hook, I find it easier to pull the stitches through the loops.

You are amazing! Seriously, this video is gonna change everything! It's exactly what I've been searching for. You make it so easy to learn many different techniques, they're names and at a beginners pace unlike some videos who wiz through leaving me feeling overloaded, ensued and then unmotivated. Yours makes me feel capable, comfortable and maybe even a little ambitious. A lekker extra congruence is exactly what I needed. Video was very well put together. Thanks a lot for this video! I have been knitting for more than a year now, but I used do the most basic cast off knitting which we can find everywhere. I was always concerned about the stretchiness and the visibility. A cast off sometimes ruins the overall look of a project! Thanks a lot 💜

Amazing video, Norman! Casting off is one of the things I always dread to do as I struggle to get the tension right with the standard method, and having more techniques in my arsenal is super helpful. What I’ve usually been using is knitting a last round using larger needles and then slip two stitches and cast off without knitting. Then the size of the needles is the only thing determining the tension and not me. I’ve seen the Italian/tubular cast off method being used in a lot of patterns lately, and I’ve tested it out for multiple projects. It’s great for some projects, but not others. I thing I’ve found that it just doesn’t work for me when I’m working with more slippery yarn as I then again struggle with the tension. I definitely have to try out more of the different methods, especially the stretchy ones.

yeah, you got that right. the italian cast-on is somewhat easy to mess up with a yarn that is either too slippery (or too fuzzy). And your trick with deconstructing the bind-off is certainly a nice addition.

sure, why not. I mean, I didn't include crochet here because it might confuse beginners. But it's certainly a valid method, and I can well imagine that it's much easier for someone who started with crochet.

You always keep it interesting, I lately do a lovely bindoff, knit 2 tog, then pop that purl wise on the left needle, then k2tog tbl pop it backon left needle & repeat till end. I loved the neat bindoff

Thanks for this grerat reference video ! i use many different bind off depending on the type of project I knit. When I do not need stretch, I will use a simple bind off or a bind off in pattern if the project ends with ribbing. I use the stretchy bind off on the top of socks, it helps not to constrain the calves. I also use Jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind off sometimes, I like the look of it on top of ribbing, it doesn't flare as much when the sock is not on you. For double knitting if i don't need the fabric to be stretchy, I use Alasdair Post-Quinn's Method. I just knit one more row than needed and then slip the work to the other end of the needle (double point or cable needle), then I pass the the first stitch over the second and so on. It gives a very regular bind off with absolutely no flare. I use the picot bind off mainly for shawls, or as a decoration on sleeve cuffs or bottom of a fancy sweater. I also use the icord bind off on more "sporty" sweaters. I sometimes use the Italian or the tubular bind off, though I prefer the look of it if I use a smaller neeedle on the last rosws. I have yet to practice the icelandic bind off and the sewn in bind off, but I love the three needle bind off to give more structure over shoulders, it can also be used as decoration on the visible side of the work, then i use a knit/purl three needles bind off, so it lays flat.

Italian bind-off is my hands on absolute favourite technique! I always use it after a 1x1 rib - and thankfully, most of my knits end with a 1x1 rib so I don't have to think too much about which bind-off method to use. :)

nothing wrong with the standard method, but having a few other techniques in your toolbox is certainly never a mistake either :)

Thank you. Glad to find very clear and concise explanations for basics. As I get better I will expand and try more. Your explanations are very clear. I wish you did crochet too. Refined crochet? Is that explored yet? Maybe you can start it & explore it with great ingenuity? My great aunt was a seamstress & avid crocheter & did refined and gorgeous crochet lace & garments. My grandmother made me beautiful & rather delicate clothes growing up. They were not granny square at all but delicate shells, etc. I’d love to learn with you if you start this. Just bring us along. I’d also like to keep knitting because I’ve done more knitting. I can’t read patterns yet though. I just create my own creations. I’ll be looking for your videos on how to understand patterns. In the past I took classes but I realize learning went slower. Often my work would get fixed but I didn’t know how to fix it myself. Watching your video I realize fixing the stitches is a snap. I’m happy to be more independent now leaning on your superior instructions. Thank you. I’m sure your channel will grow and grow!

I haven't started a project that needs binding off in FOREVER because I've never found a technique that looks right to me and has a polished, almost unnoticeable finish. I've been doing hats - bottom-up - and socks - cuff-down - so that I'll either finish just tying the remaining stitches together with the tail or doing kitchener stitch. I'm excited for this video - haven't really started it - maybe I'll finally find a suitable bind-off and will be able to make some other projects lol!

Perfect Timing! I want to do an italian bind-off for my sweatshirt, but didnt know how actually to do it. This will help :) I personally am also not a fan of the italion bind-off for a 2x2 ribbing.

I’ve been confused by the tubular BO and the Italians BO, but now I know the difference! Thank you for such a thorough explanation, as always, Norman! Not exactly a technique per se, but I recently encounter the instruction to bind off with “the yarn doubled”. I haven’t tried it yet, but I feel like it could be an alternative to “bind off loosely”, which I’m not too great at.
