In preparation for our 2021 cruising plans after lockdown eases, we’re getting the hull of our narrowboat blacked. Blacking protects the steel from corrosion and the minor impacts that inevitably happen while cruising. Our boat is blacked with bituminous paint which needs to be redone every 2-3 years in general.
We got the Canal Cruising Company in Stone to do the work for us (the same company that fixed our engine last year), and they did an absolutely fantastic job.

The folks at that boatyard seem really clued up and decent types... I think you're the third or fourth vlogger to get their blacking done there, obviously that they are happy with you remaining on board during the works is important when you live aboard!

I work on the slipway at Calcutt boats at the toplock of the grand Union. When I get a new boat, i clean the the hull with a 120 degree Celsius powerjet hose , and then use a 5inch wirebrush all over the whole hull to get any extra debris off. We then use a product called mioguard that is a rust preventitve and also a primer for whatever the customer wishes, be it the basic bitumin, inter, or 2 pack coating, (all require 2 coats for the finish..depends how much you wanna spend) plus anodes and the rear tunnel white and red (or whatever colour you desire from our range) at a small extra cost... If you are passing.. ask for dill.. top lock grand Union calcutt boats 😁

The little holes in the D-shackle screws are there to put some wire through and wrap around the shackle so they cannot come undone over time or a modern equivalent is to use thread lock.

Great to see you guys back! I had to have the wife check Facebook to make sure you two were ok. Turnbuckles, carabiners (aka snap hooks) and shackles are what you had holding the bumper on. 😉 The first scratch is always the hardest, but you can touch them up as you get them.

Welcome back. We missed you and Pixel. I'm puzzled why they don't spray your blacking as it would certainly be quicker - maybe hand painting puts a thicker mixture on the surface? And I wonder why they don't coat the bottom? Great vlog and dear little Pixel was lucky she didn't get into the blacking - good luck getting that off her! Thanks! The guy who was blacking our boat mentioned that it can be sprayed on, but it does require more preparation as the whole top part of the boat would need to be covered to prevent black speckles on the paint work! The underneath doesn’t need as much protection as the sides, because the main corrosion point is the waterline, as well as parts of the boat that tend to get bumped.

Nice to see you guys back, albeit not fully yet. So I've two, perhaps silly perhaps not, questions.... 1) When they drained the dry dock, where did all the water go? It looked the same height as the canal outside as inside and there didn't seem to be any pumps being used. So why did the water disappear down that drain hole? and 2) Why doesn't the bottom of a boat need blacking? I would have thought there would be plenty of corrosion and gunk underneath as on the sides......I bet you wish you's stopped in the marina now - lol.

Good questions! There is a lock right next to the boatyard which takes boats down to the next level (same lock you see us going through at the end of the video), so the level of the canal is actually lower out that side and the water from the dry dock goes into the lower level. As for the bottom of the boat, the main corrosion point is along the waterline on the side of the boat so that’s where most efforts are concentrated. The underneath of the boat doesn’t often come into contact with stuff, and even when it does, the paint would likely be scraped off. Those are the reasons we’ve heard, at any rate!

I see they use Ballastic Black, same as what I used. Did you have a choice of blacking or do they use this as standard?

Yes, you can choose, they also do the 2 pack epoxy if needed.

I’ve always wondered this too. It’s a very thick plate of steel (10mm?) so probably take forever to rust through it and is always submerged so less air about to do the rusting perhaps? Also large surface area so may double the cost of blacking materials. The logic I follow is these two factors combined mean it’s not traditionally done - but would love to know for sure/the real reason!

That’s pretty much it as far as we know. The main corrosion point is the waterline and the baseplate really doesn’t get knocked about that much like the sides do, so it doesn’t need the protection as much.
