How To: Bleach Your Roots and Dye Your Hair Purple

Hey guys! This video is a little bit different than what I normally post. I decided to show you how I bleach my own roots and color my hair purple when I'm in a pinch and need them done! I am a professional hairstylist and let me just say, it's MUCH harder to do your own hair than someone else, so I'd always recommend going to see a professional. However, this is how I do it when I need to do it myself!
I used Olaplex which helps make sure the bleach doesn't damage your hair, and pravana vivids for the purple color. These are both professional products and can NOT be bought at the store with out your license. I've been dying my hair since I was a teen and a good trick I've learned to help with the color getting on (or rather off) my skin is to use a flat/paddle foundation brush to brush a thin layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor onto around my hairline, ears, neck, face, etc. Then I just use a good face wash in the shower when an rinse. Another thing I do is fold up about 5 paper towels, cut them into thirds and wet them/ring them out then peel them apart and stack them loosely on my counter on top of a bag or piece of foil (so when I grab them w/my gloved hands the dye doesn't get on my counter. You can use these to quickly wipe any emergency dye spills/splatters.

love it i also have purple hair i use the semi permanent color one and only argon oil has some great colors I started purple wasn't purple enough went back for more and ended up adding blue but the color turned out great

You are your hair are absolutely gorgeous! I have been wanting to go purple for years and just had a terrible experience trying to go light enough to take color. I am patiently waiting for it to get healthy enough to try again. I am living vicariously thru all these youtube videos haha.

I love it! My hair is a mixture of Pravana Wild Orchid and Violet... and for some reason, I swear, even though it's 50/50 I always end up mixing it differently so my roots are always a slightly different shade of purple. -__- It was very cool to watch a DIY from an actual professional! I'd love to save up and buy Olaplex, I've heard it's super worth it. But so expensive! Thanks for the video!

whyhellolizzie yea I've heard nothing but great things about Olaplex and I still had to really talk myself into getting it for me haha. I think I paid $70 for the travel sized kit? Not too crazy but still. That's a lot! I'm hoping that it does over time help my hair though. My hair isn't terrible honestly, but there's always room for improvement! Thanks again for watching girl. Your videos are the best-I bleached and colored my roots for the first time last weekend and it turned out good but now I have a problem and need your help. I used a shampoo that said it was color safe and sulfate free but it has taken the root color out. Since Pravana is a stain and not a dye do you still need to use a sulfate free shampoo and what can I do now to put the color back on the roots?

I am interested in trying the pravana chromasilk blue, what do you recommend my hair stylist use to get out the teal color I have in now? She accidentally went teal instead of blue the first time and now anytime she puts blue on it immediately turns teal with one wash even using a DIY overtone conditioner. I have brown hair and she did not fully bleach it, 1st time she used a bleach shampoo just to lighten it (it was then yellowish orange) and she put teal on it which turned a horrible green after a few washes. 2nd time she did the same bleach shampoo just to lighten the green then put blue and teal..well that turned teal. 3rd time she used a color stripper and it lightened my hair drastically getting a lot of the color out just leaving a slight green, then put a dark blue and electric blue on and with one wash it was bright teal again....any suggestions?

The olaplex website lists all their verified sellers. I know sephora is one. There are fake sellers out there so keep that in mind.

I use pravana violet on my hair as well and I'm curious how many tubes it takes you to do your root touch up like you did in this video. You let your roots get the same length as I let mine when I do a touch up, but I normally mix a tad of conditioner with my pravana to help stretch it.

+Shelby Setzer I ususally use like....maybe three tubes? At the most I'll use three, but I always have extra and put it on the ends of my hair where it's gotten dry. I started mixing about a half a tube of pravana into a big bottle of conditioner and putting it on my hair every time I take a shower and it's AMAZING because now it seriously never fades, but fair warning, I have to wear gloves when I do this. :)

That was actually the first purple I ever used! It smelt like grapes! But pravana last WAY longer and is much more of a blue based purple, which I prefer.

Hey, love your hair so much. 1 question: At the beginning of the video, olaplex no 1 and no 2 are shown, but you only show yourself using olaplex no 2. I also understand olaplex is a 2 part treatment normally. Do you just use no 2, as shown in the video?

Hey I know this is an old video, I actual dyed my hair with the pravana violet about 3 weeks ago? Maybe a month.. And it's still staining my neck..I can't wear light colored clothes or run my fingers through my hair. Idk what's wrong lol. help me out?

+marisol magana I wish I could tell you that there's a solution for that, but I have the same problem. It comes with the territory. You could try a clear gloss over it to lock the color in, but I just live with it.

I've bleached my roots once since having purple hair and for some reason, I had green come through during bleaching, I didn't notice you had any! Is there any way to prevent this? The purple seemed to cover the green pretty much when I went back over it with dye but it was still somewhat noticeable in spots! I love your videos! your hair is gorgeous!

+Caitlin S Thank you so much for that! I know exactly what you're talking about I think. Are you talking about seeing green in areas where some bleach has overlapped onto purple hair and it turning green? Or are you talking about your natural hair lifting green? If you're talking about the purple turning green with overlapping bleach then I have no idea where this comes from but it's happened to me. If you use Pravana, something changed in their formula around the beginning of 2015 and they had to change the formula and now I think it somehow has green undertones. Sorry for the long answer but it bothers me so much and I know what you're talking about I just can't figure out for the life of me where the hell green could be coming from.

+Twiggy Vittoria The green I'm talking about comes from overlapping of the bleach on the purple when I touched up my roots! I was super scared I had messed something up but the Pravana seems to cover the green okay. Did you experience that at all and did you notice it being a big deal when you went over it with the dye after? I'm just worried about touching up my roots again because the green is scary! Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! :)

I've never noticed it beyond one day when we tried to put a gloss on my hair and it ended up lifting it to a neon green. I agree, green is one hell of a scary color to see in your hair! I didn't have any issues just slapping more purple on top to cover the green and it's been fine every since so I honestly wouldn't worry about it. :) Good luck with everything!! :)

Do you add conditioner to the dye or is it just straight from the tube onto the hair?

Straight from the tube to my head. If you wanted a lighter shade you could mix it with conditioner.

I have some pieces of my hair the same color and I love it. I notice that you don't seem at all concerned about staining your scalp purple. Is that not a thing? It's one of the reasons I haven't done my whole head. Also, maybe this is like the gold/blue dress but it looks totally like blue to me in this video lol. In any case you look great with blue hair!

+Mimi Klein My bathroom TOTALLY makes my hair look more blue than it actually is. I also turn up the saturation a notch and that makes the blue in the purple really stand out. I'm never worried about staining my scalp at all because it happens every time, so why worry about it? As long as you really scrub your scalp pretty well, it should come off no problem, but no sense in trying to not stain it, because it's going to happen. :) Thank you for watching and let me know if you have any more questions!

+Twiggy Vittoria god finally a video that tackles the exact problem ill need to fix once my black roots grow out even more. and its the exact color dye i use too. THANK YOU for doing this its a huge help. ive had pravana and i tend to not put straight up dye on it but put a lot of it with a lot of treseme damage conditioner, is that ok to do after the bleaching? i was going to use loreal quick blue powder and maybe 20 devolper so it wont be as damaging and i can take my time doint that , it that ok?when i dyed my hair, i have naturally dark brown/black hair and the top of my head was stil a golden bright yellow and the bottom was pretty light. should i just redye bleach my hair all over again? and what is toner exactly? does it get rid of the yeloow orange look? what brand can i use after i do my roots? or do i need a toner? my cousin did my hair but she moved lol so idk what to do on my own, but i get the idea

I dyed my sisters hair purple and it turned dark brown. Do you happen to know why?:/

That usually happens when the hair isn't light enough. If the hair still had like a dark yellow or kinda orange, purple dye will make the hair brown. In order to achieve that purple color, the hair needs to be lightened up like she did in the video.

+deeprose4 they dye is just SUPER pigmented so once it touches something, it's already stained. So I just like to wait until I'm done so I can get everything off at once. But I understand! 💜
