How to Bleed Brakes on a Snowmobile Skidoo Polaris Arctic Cat Yamaha

An important step in seasonal maintenance for a snowmobile is to change the hydraulic brake system fluid. When you change the fluid you are required to bleed the brakes to purge any air trapped in the lines.
This was done on a 1996 Skidoo MXZ 670 but is similar on most sleds from the same era.

Thanks for this video, we almost lost our 97 Summit 670 2 weeks ago to an overheated brake disc. Melted the oil bottle, which ended up catching fire, then melted the fuel lines to the primer. Luckily we were able to get the fire out by smothering the whole sled with snow. Currently working on getting replacement parts, looks like we should be able to get it back on the snow this year hopefully.

My brakes locked up on the trail today and lever was rock hard. Was able to crack bleeder to release brakes and get sled home. Checked reservoir and it was low. Guessing it’s never been changed/serviced. I will attempt bleeding and try again, but what would cause the brakes to lock up?

The tiny hole in the reservoir gets plugged and won't let the fluid pressure in the line to the caliper to release. Currently fixing same issue on my 2000 MXZ 500.

Age combined with natural ability of brake fluid to attract/suspend moisture. Over time, moisture causes rust. Rust (redish color fluid in resivoir) blocks tiny hole in resivor, brakes piston,pads dont retract. If you have older sled....check change fluid every other year, but check every year b4 season. After years of ageing hardware rust has started in brake lines, will continue. Sleds sit idle for 8 months of year, rust never sleeps. Consider useing dot 3 instead or dot 4. Trade off is moisture attraction..

And.......caliper rebuild. If anyone ever gets a part number or source for the caliper piston o ring. Let me know. It will make effective rebuilds of these model years calipers possible. Its some type of flat o ring
