I'm the least mechanically-inclined amongst all of my cyclist friends & teammates. I watched your video and bled my Shimano R785 brakes for the first time and brake function has improved exponentially (yes, it was quite bad before trying this). Thank you so much for taking the time to post this!

I love your videos. This particular one gave me the confidence I needed to install my new brakes. It took a lot more pumping for a fresh install, but in the end I got it going!!! Thank you for your the time and patience you put into your work.

Thanks for this Clint - I've been hunting everywhere for a gravity bleed tutorial, and you've done a really good job with this one. I'm in the process of building up the 4-star version of the same bike and been enjoying your videos :-)

Nicely done, thanks. I like that A, you don't wear those silly blue gloves, and B, the bike rack leaning against your back wall is identical to my Hollywood Sport rider. I also like the top down fill and bleed method you demonstrated.

Thank you, Thank you. Great video but the brakes themselves are not as good as my mtb brakes (XT and XTR). Video helped me a lot.

Very thorough, says the mechanical engineer. I'd have done it this way from my knowledge of cars but was wondering why shops want $50-150 out here! (Really?!?). Then kits have syringes and all this stuff, but I can get oil and tube on amazon for $12.70! Answered!

Thank you so much Clint, always great Instructions, great channel. I'll try this over the weekend. What's the difference between this method and the one with the syringe ?
@ClintGibbs8 жыл бұрын
The syringe pushes the fluid up from the caliper, the gravity method does the same thing but uses gravity to get the fluid from the lever into the lines and down through the caliper. The only problem with the gravity method is that you have to make sure the rear caliper is hanging pretty low so you usually have to get it off the bike.

Just an FYI, on the Dura Ace 9000 front caliper...it doesn't have a bleed valve, just a bleed screw. There is no nipple to attach a hose to. About all you can do is a gravity bleed with the funnel at the top and just open the bleed screw and let it run out.
@lewisvideochannel52457 жыл бұрын
Just wasted a lot of time figuring this out and there is actually a yellow shimano bleed adapter that you can use. Here's thread about it on MTBR forums.mtbr.com/brake-time/shimano-brakes-yellow-funky-bleed-thingy-tl-br52-1001030.html

Do you find your R785 hydraulic brakes having too much free throw (the amount of lever pull before the pads engage)? I adjusted the free throw screw on the side of the shifter to minimum and its still more than half way in before the pads engage. I have heard that bleeding and adding a little extra pressure into the hose with fluid before closing the system will "pre-engage" the brakes a bit, do you have problems like this? thanks!
@ClintGibbs9 жыл бұрын
Bleeding usually just makes the brakes firmer when the lever engages, unless there's just a lot of air in the lines. I find the engagement perfect on the Shimano XT brakes. I have them as close to the bar as I can without the lever hitting my knuckles (the ones left on the handlebar).
@IsaiahsBabyDaddy8 жыл бұрын
+Terry Chen I also find this to be a concern on my CX bike. I like the brakes to engage with minimum amount of lever throw. I will be doing a bleed on one side only as there seems to be a leak coming from the banjo bolt area as it has been collecting dirt. Thanks to Clint Gibbs for the tutorial!

very nice and instructive video. is there a way to "burp" the shimanos sti's as seen in mtb videos? thanks.

+giovanni spinotti I did a video on how to bleed Shimano hydraulic Road brakes. Pretty similar process.

My pistons holder, the yellow block in the middle of the where the break pads usually are fell off cause the pistons pulled all the way back, is that a good thing ?

Clint fantastic tutorial, Im about to bleed a new pair of BR-RS785 that don't have the bleed nipple just a screw, can you still do this method and let the fluid run out? any tips?
@kwazymoto8 жыл бұрын
+Darren Dunn , The bleed nipple is there. Its just recessed into the body of the caliper (close to the bleed screw). There is a rubber plug that you need to pull off, then you'll see the nipple.

guys if you are ever short of fluid and need to find some other than the OEM fluid then get auto parts store and grab a bottle of mineral motorbike for bike forksl. it works and i use a lightweight castrol oil I'm all my shimano brakes for years now. the price is a little cheaper but for me it came down a lighter weight oil, i just like the action that's all.

Hi Clint thanks for the video. One quick question: Is it normal to have a slight difference in feel between the front and back brake? When I squeeze the front lever, I feed a "hard dead stop" when the pads contact the rotar where as the rear has a slight sponge feel to it. Both have about the same braking power. Thanks!
@ClintGibbs8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Gadamus but should have about the same firmness. Because the rear brake line is longer there's more of a chance to get air bubbles inside. It sounds like you need to bleed the rear brake.

I don’t see a mention of adjusting the free stroke screw prior to bleed? Should that be all the way in or out before bleeding?
@ClintGibbs Жыл бұрын
Shimano's bleed process indicates to start at the factory settings which is free stroke all the way in and lever reach all the way out. But to be honest, it’s not something that I do and I’ve never had an issue with it. I just leave it where it’s at.

I got oil on my pads and just a few rides they were good as new. The bike industry wants you to throw them in the bin but you can just ride off the oil from the pad!
@ClintGibbs5 жыл бұрын
Since I live in an area without mountains and I have not been able to try that. But I've heard that you can drag your brakes down a mountain to get the oil off (usually I want my brakes working perfectly when I head to the mountains!). I think it depends on how bad the saturation is. I had a buddy who got oil on his pads and he was on a mountain bike course with steep drops and literally broke his hydraulic line he was squeezing the brakes so hard. I find the sand paper trick works best if you don't have it the opportunity to ride down the mountain to drag the brakes. Thanks for the Post! Take care.

Hi. At 09:29 you’re starting a step with quick opening/closing of calliper bleed nipple with pumping of brake lever. May I ask what is the reason for that?
@ClintGibbs2 жыл бұрын
It bleeds air bubbles out of the caliper

Hello clint What is the difference between bleeding and burping (Sorry for my poor english)
@ClintGibbs8 жыл бұрын
+Christian Paul Corpuz burping doesn't really apply the brakes. It usually applies to a tire. When you burp a tire you hit something that causes air to leak out between the bead on the rim, which is not good. Bleeding brakes means you just get air bubbles out of the brake lines.
@cpshioti158 жыл бұрын
+Clint Gibbs ok thanks for the answer

How is your lever throw after the bleed?
@ClintGibbs9 жыл бұрын
Unless you have a ton of air bubbles in your brake lines, bleeding doesn't effect the lever throw a whole lot. But it does effect how firm the lever is once it engages.

I need to remove a rear Shimano Hydro disc brake from a frame with internal cable routing. Do I need to make sure I don't have any fluid in the brake? Help!!! RDO looks nice!!!
@ClintGibbs9 жыл бұрын
No, just get out enough so it won't drip inside the frame while pulling it through. Disconnect at the lever end (not the caliper end). It's mineral oil and not DOT so it won't corrode your frame. Just make SURE you don't get any fluid on the brake pads.
@jcaricati19 жыл бұрын
One other question, at the lever end there is a big connector on the end of the cable that goes into the shifter; does this connector come off?
@ClintGibbs9 жыл бұрын
jcaricati1 The road brakes on this bike are a split design, meaning they came apart in the middle. I did not have to remove the hose at the leaver end, like I would on a mountain bike. Is yours like this, or is the hose continuous? It may be helpful for you to send me a message on KZfaq with your email address if you need further help. That way you could send me a photo.
@jcaricati19 жыл бұрын
The hose is not continuous; there is a big connector in the middle. I have not tried to disconnect the connector. I can send you pictures if you'd like. jcaricati@yahoo.com

not the correct bleeding procedure for shimano brakes
@ClintGibbs7 жыл бұрын
+Pedro Barham like I've explained to others many times, there are two ways to bleed Shimano brakes. When I started bleeding them back in the late 90s the gravity method was the only method Shimano recommended. They have since moved to the syringe method. The gravity method goes from the lever down to the caliper, where is the syringe method goes from the caliper up to the lever. I've used both and both work well.
@pedrobarham41977 жыл бұрын
my favourite method is the gravity bleed thats why i like hope brake because its so simple unfortunately had mixed results with it on closed reservoir systems like shimano as the air bubbles can collect in the lever then people just end up having to redo it a few times to get it right in the end but they both produce the same result just the new shimano way is less hassle
@pedrobarham41977 жыл бұрын
all i was trying to do was inform people this is not the recommended method by shimano
@ClintGibbs7 жыл бұрын
No worries. I may try to post a video showing the syringe method in the next few weeks. When I used Avid brakes I would always use the syringe method.
@2wagondragon7 жыл бұрын
Lots of alternative procedures are at least as good as Shimano's "correct" procedures. This is just one example.
