HOW TO BRAKE in GO KARTING - TUTORIAL (KARTING TIPS)
In today's video we cover the technique behind braking in go karting. Braking can be challenging to master. However, the more you practice the better you will become at braking.
(Some of the onboard karting footage was recorded at Losail Go Karting Circuit which is located at the Qatar F1 track)

These tips are pretty good, but a very common mistake in rental karts is that people tend to brake too much. You really need to keep up the momentum in rental karts in order to be fast as they have very little power. What this means is that you often only need to brake in order to get the kart turning as turning the kart will already scrub off enough speed. At an indoor karting track near me there are more than 20 corners but you only have to touch the brakes at 3 of them if you take the right lines.

Same as an outdoor track I was just at with pretty fast rental karts (80kph+) You never actually need to break if you're brave enough and know where the kart should be coming into each corner - letting off the accelerator is more than enough

With the 6.5bhp and 9bhp karts (no idea whether that's the standard for rental karts across Europe and/or the world) I never brake. I drift the kart with counter steer approaching the corner and drift with opposite wheel lock all the way through, which in my experience, gives me the best momentum out of the turn. I do pretty good lap times but not sure at all whether that's the correct technique since there is nobody to teach me :D

@@nikolamladenoff3516 its definitely the fun way!! generally speaking with karts, having neutral steer (quick sharp turning input at beginning followed by continuing through the corner without having to have any steering input, or having the wheels point straight while turning, and not counter steering) is going to be the quickest way through a corner, the objective is to eliminate all steering as much as possible. so your idea of drifting is in the right direction, just dial it back aa bit so that instead of counter steering, you do a sharp initial steering input and return to and stay at center of steering for the majority of the corner

The thing I've found is that since karts have no front brakes, you maintain a lot of front end grip even under braking. You can use this change in grip balance to your advantage to get the kart to rotate into tighter turns

@chiragmaragal3390 Usually you just lightly stab the brake as you turn and it almost pivots the kart towards the apex. I do this on some tracks in many corners that don't really require full on braking, especially if the kart is really tight and plowing to help it to turn. Often, after the front tires warm up after the first 3 or 4 laps, I don't have to use the brake like that anymore.

The hardest part is trying to start braking correctly when you're closely following another car. That will make harder to see your reference marker and if the car if front of you has totally different braking style, you'll have problems trying to keep your own breaking point. In addition, the leading car can drive defensively and brake "too much" but use their car to block your overtake line.

i think the hairpin example was actually too much braking applied which made the gokart drift thus loosing much more speed and overheating the tires. Best would be to break hard in a straight line, start releasing the break when turning the wheel in and then releasing the break pedal around the apex to be able to accelerate flat out from apex on. Technique shown in the video will work only on extremely tight and narrow corners where you have to rotate the gokart ASAP and start accelerating. Overall though very useful video - one of the major points is that knowing the track will help one gain the breaking advantage

remember to adjust your braking technique to how much power your kart makes. low power carts will be faster with softer braking and wider turns - by starting on the outside of a turn, touching the apex, and ending up on the outside again. you want to carry as much cornering speed as possible because you can't accelerate as fast. as for high power carts, you can take a more V shaped line where you brake hard very late, oversteer to get your kart pointed at the exit, then tearing off again.

I never really watched a tutorial about kartin, just did it and did it like i thought would be good.. Since i am very heavy(over 220pouds) i usually break really hard, and to my vision at the latest point possible.. in later rounds when i feel more comfortable i tryd to push a few inches further every time, but then i miss the turn or lock the wheels.. mostly loose time after a break since the cart takes ages to accelerate after the turn, and often a lot of drivers then run away from me. At my area we got many 180° corners which makes it hard for me to gain speed. at least thats what i think.

In the first hairpin turn shown in this video, it appears he is braking and turning into the right hairpin at the same time. You can also see this results in the rear end rotating and the driver applying opposite steering lock. I always thought hard braking is best done in a straight line just before turning in towards the apex and the brake pedal is released gradually once steering wheel is turned towards apex

he's threshold braking, he's using the bit of spare grip remaining in the front tyres as he lifts slowly off the brakes to turn at the same time. A little bit of rear slip and mild oversteer is ideal in this scenario as it allows the vehicle to rotate more aggressively as it enters tthe corner

You can carry the brakes into the corner. In a normal car this will decelerate the car meaning you can brake later but will induce understeer. In a kart there’s only rear brakes which means it’s easier to spin by trail braking into the corner but you can carry a higher entry speed and use the brakes to rotate the kart

@brierleys
@brierleys Жыл бұрын
As you brake, turn full lock into the corner, the kart will understeer, probably not even turning at all if you are going fast enough. Aim to go around the outside edge of the corner in the wet. Combined with the fronts scrubbing off speed and the fact you are missing the inside kerb, you may even be able to brake later. Hold the lock. Eventually, the kart will slow and weight will transfer off of the inside rear and onto the outside front. At this point, the kart should start to rotate into the corner. Be ready to catch the steering back to a normal angle as it does so. Carry on round the corner. You will get really good traction off of the corner because the steering angle is almost straight on exit compared to the dry line. Don't be afraid to use full lock if the kart is understeering. My advice is always be firm with the steering but gentle on the pedals because the steering generates grip at the front at turn in, whereas the pedals do the opposite at the back.

excellent. i'm guilty of not doing this, even ... while i know this is the proper way. the improper way i do it... is never ever let off the throttle. i press the brakes while still on full throttle. and i do use the brake as an on/off switch. once finished slowing down the cart i drop off the brake. as thats the fastest way to release it. and since i was all the way on full throttle, i have zero delay of accelerating. the problem with this is... excessive wear. both on brakes, clutch, tyre, drive chain. but it yields better lap times... 1 corner, 1 time brake is applied. and for that 1 time its full on.

At first your timing may be slower because you are trying a new technique. However, the key is to practice this technique over a long period of time. Each time you race, attempt to brake later and later into the corner. This way you will gain more confidence when braking. When you become more confident under braking, you can really find the limit of late braking which will ultimately help you improve your lap time.

@@kartingtips Hey man, I've heard that you should barely be using brakes in karting so that you don't slow the revs down a lot and kill the engine, making it slower for you to reach top speeds on the straights. And I've also heard that when you do need to use the brake, just give it a hard tap and get off it immediately. This contradicts the tips you give in this video of coming off the brake slowly. @@DeputyiC I agree that you should spend as less time possible on the brake pedal. Regarding coming off of the brakes, the point I was trying to make in the video, was that you should avoid aggressively coming off brake pedal. If you are too aggressive coming off of the brake pedal it can unsettle the kart.
@that.schamp
@that.schamp 2 жыл бұрын
@@DeputyiC Many indoor tracks require little or no braking with the common types of rental karts. Instead of braking you can often just lift and use excess yaw entering the corner to scrub speed. A quick tap of the brake can be used to both reduce speed and help rotate the kart. Tracks with higher speeds - including all of the outdoors tracks I have driven - will usually require proper braking at one or more points on the track. Simple examples: Short straight into a decreasing radius turn? Scrub it. Medium straight into an increasing radius turn? Tap and go. Long straight into a hairpin? Use the brake. Personally, I tend to rely on using yaw to scrub speed too much.... There have been numerous times when I found people gaining time by braking at places I didn't think it was useful. We may have the same exit speed, but they went a little deeper in and took a slightly shorter line to get there. The transmission type and condition can also play a role in what is fast - you can have widely variable transmission operation in a fleet of identical rental karts. Another factor is that many rental karts have a system for retarding the engine when the brake and gas are pressed concurrently, and the sensitivity or operation of that system will also vary widely. Often the kart just won't let you make the transition from brake to throttle as fast as you need, so you make compromises. If you step up to TAG, shifters, or cars you will certainly need to be braking effectively.

Why let go of the brake slowly? What's a consequence of just letting go of it suddenly?

if its a quite wide and ,as you said, high speed then there may be no need to brake at all, you could even keep abit of throttle aslong as you can maintain the racing line ofc

Don’t speak about minima speed on corner. Its the key to perform in go kart. All the skills you put in application, its to keep minima speed by turn, it drive your breaking style, your breaking point and the line to take too

How far away from the turn should we set our braking point? like 30m or smth?

Debends on how much speed you have coming to the and how tight the corner is. Trial and error is the only real method of finding the breaking point. First just pick a point to break and try it. If you over shoot the corner and aren't able to turn quickly enough for the corner, pick a new breaking point that's earlier than the last one. If you lose too much speed before the turning point and have to accelerate before the apex to maintain speed, pick a breaking point that comes later than the last one. Then just repeat this until your breaking point feels perfect.

Better off coasting through most corners in these slow karts. Braking at all will load weight to the front wheels and take weight off the rear, which is probably why youre sliding in every demonstration and if the rear is sliding then you arent accelerating. If you coast through these turns you can have better weight distribution and take the corner faster. Everything I've seen in this video the kart should be able to do without any break at all. Just moderate release of the throttle or change up your racing line.

Here in South Africa we have many tracks that use the Sodi RT8 karts which are on/off switches on brakes and accelerator 🙃 so stupid

Do you know how to 'flick' brake and shorten the braking distance. All the great kart drivers do this: TF; Mike Wilson; etc. The idea is to flick the kart sideways on the brake. The kart slows as much because it is travelling sideways. The benefits are two-fold: you shorten the braking distance AND set-up the kart for the corner and are able to get on the power early. It takes a bit of practice.
