I give 21 tips that any golfer can use to break through their scoring barrier. I include key stats and strategies that any golfer can implement. This is coming from someone who is not a long hitter. I played no other sports growing up and have no athletic ability. I can however play reasonably well as an unathletic golfer.

Breaking 90 is my goal for this next season. Started playing a decade ago, got to the point where I was almost breaking 90, and two things happened--first, the course that I played on consistently (also probably the easiest course in the area) closed, and second, I fell down the rabbit-hole of KZfaq golf coaching and started second-guessing EVERYTHING I was doing on the course, and I went from averaging bogeys to double-and triple-bogeys and an average of one melt-down hole out of every six I played (where I was scoring beyond triple-bogey, and a lot of times, I was just picking up my ball at ten strokes). I also discovered that I've lived with undiagnosed ADHD all my life, which shows itself on the golf course with me getting impatient and unfocused every so often (which was, I now realize, one of the big contributors to the meltdown holes). It's taken me six or seven years to get back to where I'm breaking 100 on what is, now, my "home course", my last round of the season I was down to 93 (that was almost a week ago...we've had six inches of snow fall since then so I don't expect to make it out to a course for another 3-4 months.) A lot of these tips, I'm already using. My short game is my Achilles' Heel, and a large part of that is maintaining the focus necessary to chip and putt effectively (I'm also about 50/50 on reading greens). I'll revisit this video again when courses open back up in the area!

Absolutely fantastic and a couple ingenious tips there. One of the best tips I ever got was while I was in the dentist chair and we were talking golf. He said, "If I showed up at the golf course and somebody offered me a chance to sign a scorecard with 18 bogey's, I'd sign it in an instant!" He added, "Think of it this way, 5x9 is 45 (or x 18 is 90). When you think of it that way, a little course management and keeping the ball in play and breaking 90 doesn't seem so tough!

Great video and Great advice! I followed another guy on KZfaq and tok his advice: If you try to break 90 or Even 85 you need 5 or 6 Clubs including Putter! I am 74, my drive is 180yards and I break 90 all The time😂 For most of us it is s matter of hitting it 150-175 and practice put/chip/pitch. Could you make a video along those Lines? Wow, these are great. Thinking I need to always get to the green in regulation is my biggest problem. On almost every hole, I would be FAR better off managing two lay-up shots and then having a nice pitch to the center of the green, and 2 putts for bogey. Instead, I blow a drive into the trees, pitch-out, blow a long iron into trouble, pitch from a bad lie to another bad lie, make it on the green and then 2 or 3 putt for a 7 or 8. And that's BEFORE the beer cart comes around...

You sold me on the Hy-wood. Picked one up last week. It’s a great 180 club for me. After doing some research on that club I was reading about the old Heavenwood witch was supposedly a 7 wood head on a 3 or 4 wood shaft. Hmmmm. I went to the attic and found my old G400 woods. I put the 7 Head on the 3 wood shaft. Guess what? It worked really well. Easy to hit high. Thanks for another great video. 68 and sunny in Indy today.

So I have become a big fan of the traffic light approach and it’s paying off. I have a couple of 89s and a 90 in the last few weeks and it’s because I am making better decisions about when to go for it and when not to. That doesn’t mean always being conservative as I drove the green on a short par 4 that I always laid up on. There’s water to the right so you’d probably call it yellow but I aim left edge. Also birdied a par 5 yesterday that’s definitely a red light from the tee with a tight landing area. Hybrid, hybrid and 9 iron did the trick there. Keep generating the great videos. Mr. Slowly Getting Better at Golf out!

Good stuff here. For me, literally adding 1 stroke to each hole's par on the scorecard was a huge help. It stopped me looking for 'par' and getting down when I made bogey. Bogey golf is 90, so if I made one adjusted birdie (natural par) and 17 pars (natural bogey) I shot 89. It's a mindset thing I know, but it works.

Great video and Tips, one tip I was taught about putting, lag putting especially, what ever break you see, allow TWICE as much break, by doing so, if you hit it too hard you end up just past the hole, if you don’t hit it hard enough you end up just short,,,, as you learn to control your speed, you can cut down on the break allowance,,,

One of the best decisions I made about what I keep in my bag was getting rid of my 15deg 3W, and replacing it with a 17deg. 2deg of loft doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a night-and-day difference for me. I still struggle for consistency with it, but unlike the 3W, I can actually get a decent shot off the deck. I don't think I ever got my 3W in the air outside of tee shots. Appreciate the advice! I'm hoping to put it into practice over the summer.

Another quick one on short game. If you have short sided yourself with hazard between you and the hole, always try and pitch or chip your ball with enough clubhead speed to clear the hazard and carry beyond the edge of the green, even if it means aiming well past the hole.

That was really good advice: make the best of a bad round when you aren’t ‘on’ with your stroke. After all, you are playing golf, it’s all good, and when you play the next hole, you might be ok. Keep your head up, and remember, you have a guy(s) playing with you, and you should keep it upbeat and fun for them, too.

If you struggle with aiming and alignment, pick a spot a couple of feet in front of your ball in line with your target and imagine you are putting to that spot with whatever club you are about to hit. Helps narrow your focus and makes it easier to align your body Works wonders for me. Then just rip it !

a Golf instructor told me one time...he held up a pitching wedge and gave me a rule of thumb... pitch the ball the length of the grip...and it will roll the length of the steel shaft ....then he did the same with a 8 iron...and said ....get it ?.... I used that technique on my way to a 17 handicap then to the average score of 85 .... the game was a lot more fun busting 90

tip #22 - don't play in the dark 😉. Couldn't agree more, no harm in purposefully playing short on a par 3 to avoid trouble, especially if the flag is at the front. Worse you are coming away with is a 4, and par still possible.

So Important, on the long par 3's say over 175, if protected , I will play it like a par 4, My dad told me "Play for the bogie's and the pars will fall" Limit your mistakes. If us hackers add one stroke per hole and make par 90, we may help our head and not go for the TIGER shots all of the time.

Yep. Too many amateurs try to play golf like pros thinking their goal should be to hit every green on a par 3. On long par 3's if there is a stretch of pretty decent sized fairway in front of front bunkers or somewhere to bail out of trouble I'm going for it every time. If you look at scoring averages on those holes they are already over par so even if you miss short, pitch on to about 20 feet for par, miss the par putt and tap in for bogey you aren't giving shots away.
@mistahshorthitter

Agree fully. The opposite may apply on shorter par 3's with hazards in front and no real trouble over the green. Play percentage and take one club more where a well struck shot may roll a few feet off the back of the green.

Good stuff. I would add that at the range, 100 balls, only 5 should be the driver. 60-70 should be wedges, 9,8,7. The rest long clubs. If you dial in your swing, the driver is the easiest club in the bag. It's huge and forgiving, the target is the largest on the hole, and the lie is perfect and always flat. MSH should do a practice range video👍🏼

Putting drills that work for distance control: #1) Listen to audiobook of Putting Out of Your Mind, Bob Rotella. Free on You Tube. #2) Brad Faxon (also You Tube): Putt long lag putts and try to leave them on the high side and a little short of the hole. Teaches you how to read a putt. #3) Bob Rotella (see #1): For distance control don't putt 20-40 foot putts on the practice green. It teaches you to miss. Instead pick a spot on the collar and try to stop your ball 1" where the green meets the collar. Practice 3'/6'/9' putts on the green. Get your mind trained on making them. 4) Bob Rotella on Faxon: take 3 balls from 5' on a moderate break. Putt until you make all 3 putts on different lines. Firm, a little softer, die at the hole. I love these drills and I dont fear the 30' putt anymore. Relish it.
