I always used either the same flake as my adults that I crushed or They actually make flake that is already ground up. I never understood why people want to complicate the process. The powder flake is perfect and the bigger they are they less you break up the flakes until they are up to full flakes. Im glad you are sharing simple correct tips that work.

Yeah sometimes you have females that will spawn over and over again but some will only spawn once or twice a year. It's totally dependent on the female. Some are more fertile then others just like some women are more fertile then others.

50% twice a week if you can do it. That would be ideal, the more you do the happier they'll be.

I tried water changes every day vs 2 times a week and they grow faster with FEWER water changes. I am pretty sure it stressed them out cuz I was water changing every day. When doing less water changes they are more calm in the tank, they eat more and feel better = faster growing. BUT your water has to be perfect even with only 2 water changes a week.

First off LOVE YOU CHANNEL!! I have learned so much from you guys. I have a 150 cichlid . My Bubblehead recently had a “gazillion” fry which I aspirated into a 5 gal tank before they got devoured by the rest. They have been in there for 2 about days. I initially everything seemed to be going well. I started with a good size sponge filter, tank water from the 150 and started feeding with Northfin Fry Starter food. The light is on a timer. Today they are dropping off left and right. The remainder fry are cowering together in a corner and look like they are about to kick the bucket as well…HELP…Any suggestions John???

When can we put the fry together? like size wise. we have some little fish that are a little over an inch, and then some babies that their little stomachs are almost all the way in. i know those are way to different to be together, but they are also too small for the big tank, do we need to get a third tank? or what do you suggest?

Hey John I have watched all 8 of your videos and I have followed everything so far. 29 gal breeder 10 gal fry and a 55 gal grow out tank for yellow Labs. One thing I didnt get an answer to was how many can be added into the grow out tank. For instance if I have two breeds within 3 weeks and the first set of fry are now in the grow out tank is it okay for me to add the next batch of fry once they grow about an inch?

Hi John, I had an aquaponics tank setup for about a year with blue tilapia in it. Fed them aquamax 500. Was thinking about grinding those pellets up a fry food. Thought that would be a good choice since it was for the tilapia "farming ". What do you think? By the way, I'm just starting breeding my first cichlids (saulosi) and have one holding now. Have been enjoying your vidios. Thanks

I have two pairs of beautiful Black convicts. Two days after bringing them home, one pair paired up and laid some eggs. Now, they've hatched and there are about 40ish baby fry. I was a little worried about the other pair though, the male had a giant growth spurt and was about 3 times bigger than the female, and was incredibly aggressive towards the female. They WOULD NOT PAIR. But finally, they did about 2 weeks later. Now I have about 80 eggs. Seriously. Not exaggerating.

Bert Ramsay It's far from good, but it can be done. But don't expect optimal growth etc For the first month I use +- 5 gallon tanks and after that 20-30gallon tanks. And even 20gallon is not big enough to get them to a decent size.

Hey! I was just wondering, my cichlids spawned without me knowing so I had to seperate the female with a divider. I don’t have access to all of these different tanks so will splitting a 55 gallon in half work to?(with a divider)
@Doehillmoto
@Doehillmoto 4 жыл бұрын
Nicolas Leonardo hey bud you shouldn’t have to separate the female while she’s holding (Upto 21 days) if that’s what you mean if you have lots of hiding spaces for the fry when the female releases them you should have a better chance of survival, hope this helps

It's best to sell them to your lfs as a last resort, get some good pictures of them and the parents then post them on Gumtree or Ebay. They would have to be in very poor shape for your lfs refuses to take them, but don't just turn up at the shop with a bag full of fish. That makes it look like you are desperate to "get rid" of them. Phone up first to make sure the shop wants them and also that they have the space for them.

What would you suggest as a cleanup crew for an african cichlid fry tank? I've heard some snails work. I've also heard some shrimp species work, but with both snails and shrimp, my worries are that they'd eat the fry (especially if they're not free-swimming yet).
@KGTropicals
@KGTropicals 10 жыл бұрын
Well if they're not free swimming they shouldn't be in a tank yet, they sould be in a tumbler:-) I've never heard of snails eating other fish, I suppose shrimp could but African fry are a pretty good size when they're free swimming so I don't think they'd be a problem either. Bristlenose work really well though. We use to raise Bristlenose fry with our African fry, best of both worlds.
