Thanks for this :) I’m 13 and have had / currently have many amphibians and a bearded dragon who eat insects and my toad only eats worms lol he’s fat. Your Dubia roach video helped me a lot as well, and I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who isn’t scared of insects. I’m subscribing :)

@@NORTHERNEXOTICS As an alternative to the egg cartons, could you just add the remaining bedding a week or so (or whenever most females are done laying eggs) after the moths emerge to the top of a new batch of the honey mixture? I'm guessing the moth bedding would be filled with hundreds of eggs. If there is a lot of the old mixture left, you could add the egg filled bedding to several new mixtures and make multiple breeding colonies. Do you think that makes sense?

Thank you! I been getting mine at a bass shop and this seems much easier. I also like the idea of my own little colony. I have a jumping spider, and two salamanders. Id like to get a couple crested geckos, and breed. First id wait though, just to get the care aspect down, have it all set up real nice and proper. I feel you owe it to your animals to give them the best life.

I cant find my comment.. I did this and said it never took off but wow I was wrong. I thought the eggs just weren't gonna hatch but then I really started looking and after a month i noticed super tiny little baby worms. On the top of the grain oat mix is a graveyard of old moth corpses and I'm hoping they recycle mom and dad. Lol

Interesting, seems I’ve been breeding by mistake 😂 I bought wax worms for my praying mantis to pupate into moths for him to eat (too big for fruit flies). Bought the tub with most pupated already to speed it up, still had some worms tho so did the setup above. They all hatched a while ago and have been flying around and I assume laying eggs in the substrate... I hadn’t even considered you know 😂😂😂

I bought some waxworms for my bird feeders and thought well I could try to breed my own. On reading the leaflet which came with the waxworms I discovered that they were especially bred for food and they would never pupate but just die after a certain time. Anyway I've googled over and over for waxworms for the purpose of starting a colony. I get loads of hits but none of them specifically say they will turn into moths given the right conditions except those in the USA and I'm in UK. I don't want to buy more and find that again they are of a type that will not turn into moths. Can anyone recommend somewhere to get waxworms suitable for eventual breeding please., would be grateful. Great vid btw, very informative, very useful thanks.

Speaking as a beekeeper, I have to say there are a lot of incorrect statements in this video. First, there are two species of waxmoth (www.nationalbeeunit.com/gallery/index.cfm?galleryid=26 - the greater waxmoth (Galleria mellonella) and the lesser waxmoth (Achroia grisella). Neither of them eats honey. They are attracted to used brood combs to lay their eggs in a place where their developing larvae will be able to burrow through brood combs, feeding on the discarded larval stages of honeybees and also on pollen (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waxworm ). This makes them a pest to honeybee colonies so, if you could find an alternate food source, you would be helping honeybees which are in decline for a number of reasons. Another problem with the video is that you squirted honey into oats. This cheap supermarket honey (I believe that one was Rowse) is a blend - euphemistically called a "product of EU and non-EU countries" - which basically means it is "dumped" from China where veterinary medicines control doesn't exist. A few years ago, it was banned throughout the EU because it was found to contain chloramphenicol - the eye drop which is actually an antibiotic. Do you really want to feed antibiotic to your animals? Another problem is that honey can contain spores that are harmless to humans but cause diseases in honeybees. If the medium is disposed of improperly, honeybees will be attracted to the "free food" and carry disease (European, or American, Foulbrood EFB/AFB) back to their colonies. These are notifiable diseases under The Bee Diseases and Pests Control (England) Order 2006 (www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2006/342/made ) and may lead to affected colonies/equipment being burned. Please get your facts straight and consider the impact of your behaviour on others. Thank you.

Now this was an education for me to which I highly appreciate the info and will look deeper into this information. Would you suggest a diffrent way to breed waxworms at home for the reptile hobby? This method has been working really well but with the issues you raised and the research I'm about to do I'd think a change is nessersary. Here on this channel we are always looking for info like what you have just shared. Thank you

@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Thank you for adopting a responsible attitude. It would have been easy to be defensive and delete my comment out-of-hand. I would suggest alternatives such as mealworm/superworms if you are feeding for protein/chitin. These can be reared in much the same way you showed in your video (except, without the honey). Other alternatives might include black soldier fly larvae/crickets/etc., depending on what animal you want to feed and for what purpose. I am not an expert on exotic pets so I can't really provide a lot of information. I only know that your suggested method could cause a lot of problems for honeybees and beekeepers.

What's a better way of raising them? I've been really reluctant to use honey because of the risk of spreading disease, but everywhere I looked said the waxworms needed it to eat (which I always thought sounded a bit odd!). What else can I give them to eat, oats and bee pollen? What should I give them as a water source? I'd still like to breed them but want to take the extra steps to make sure I'm not hurting bees in the process. I'm already taking extra measures to ensure they don't escape, and using pure honey of course because why would I bother buying that diluted crap? I know you said you're not an expert so sorry if these are hard questions!! It's okay if you can't answer them

@@fanpet3912 As with all things, you have to understand what each stage in it's life-cycle requires. You'll have to go off to research this yourself though as beekeepers are more concerned with keeping these things out of our combs. I suggest that you begin by looking at which wax-moth you want ("greater"/"lesser") then google what they need during the larval stage. You'll soon become the expert you're looking for (particularly if you read all the scientific literature on them you can find too) ;-)

In my experience (course im a zone 9) a much larger enclosure with lots of ventillation heat and glycerin are necessary. Iv tried smaller containers like yours. Didnt work out well. Tried with out glycerin. Also failed.
