I've done just about anything you could think of on buildings in regards to trade work, but never site excavation and foundation construction. I have now filled and compacted about 400-500 yards of stone here in Hawaii, on top of muck and almost bare lava at two different sites, quite different than the mainland! Now we are starting a 8"x8"x16" block perimeter footing for a cabin. I've gone through a lot of videos and this one puts the cap on all the issues I have been explaining to the owner, my sons friend that has zero experience, but wants to learn how to build whole houses. My son and he are working on 5 lots, 2 of which are ready for base course and to start the build. Several issues we have been discussing are clarified nicely in this video. Filling all the cores and rebar in every cell, and the stucco to make it look nice if we don't like how it comes out. Your video about the retain wall and driveway we talked about yesterday covered most of it very well, but this one really brought out the points we were most concerned with. Thanks, and keep up that SoCal attitude you have. I was in San Diego for 40 years, and two in LA. Much appreciated.

@@BruceWayne-ue5dj but there is always a right way .I have seen and gone to fix walls and they crack from the top all the way to the footer because there is no rebar and they use that fine pebbled concrete. It would be acceptable if they dug deeper and used big rocks and portland cement with sand mortar to set them. I have built foundations in the USA and Mexico where we do this all the time. And if you think theres multiple ways to wipe your ass there will always be a right way. You must be the type to wipe you ass with your fingers and rinse your hands afterwards. My office has steel bollards installed all around our city block (we own the whole block). Each steel bollard is 5 foot below ground and 3 foot above ground. We had them installed in 2002 after Sep 11 attacks and back then we paid 17k for each bollard. They have a nice decorative brushed stainless steel cap on the exposed section. So far no one has tried to ram into it, but I am sure it will hold. Also each bollard is installed at 3 feet distance.

I had to draw it in sketchup and it needed quite a few cuts to make the square columns but the piers were bonded nicely into the wall. Suffice to say it was a pain to do. Out of curiosity how did you bond your piers into the wall, did you use metal ties?

You know, laying blocks immediately after the footing is a great thing. When you put footings and you forget that you could also put the blocks immediately afterwards, insuring stronger block attachment to it is a waste of a really strong bond and also, you could easily build the blocks on it since it is still soft.

From listening to the video, it seems it was what the customer wanted to do. However, while I agree with you, I think also the extra stucco was to add to it's ability to slow down an incoming car. Maybe this was a cheaper more viable way for the customer to afford the work? It seems aesthetics was a lower priority than the means of the customer, which is obviously necessary.

Yeah, sidewalk got pretty dirty. But the guys did clean it up. I too, was expecting some kind of cover on the ground.

They are clearly not stucco men. They had no business charging for that mess of a stucco job.

Awesome job!! Quick question for anyone, could I put brick on the outside of the blocks or would that not be supportable? Trying to see whether or not I have to do the whole wall brick, or just the exterior of blocks.

I saw a lot of stucco dropping on the sidewalk but there wasn't any sort of plastic or paper down. How do you go about cleaning it all off? I'm asking because I'm about to embark on stuccoing my walls.

i think it needs a stronger rebar in both vertical and horizon inside wall.. I know it is not in CA building code, however, its a good idea to make it stronger preventing vehicle such as heavy trucks from hitting the house.
