Thanks Tim, another great video, as the current owner of this catamaran I can absolutely confirm your statements here. Our experiences Offshore and bay sailing are very much the same, incidentally I currently have the Mega Board out at the moment refurbishing it, primarily a repaint and to fit new roller guides. It has certainly stood the test of time mate. Cheers Malcolm

@@TimWestonboats what a great boat you built, and the daggerboard is breakthrough. good on ya! while i was watching you build the boat, my only concern was the unprotected rudders. i imagined that a 'cruising' cat should have 'keels' with flat bottoms for beaching, and rudders hung from skegs. i wonder what you think of this, and why you decided for the more 'racing' config? obviously, your decisions have stood the test of time, and i find the boat absolutely beautiful, and one of the finest of it's class i have seen.

In the sport of windsurfing which I have enjoyed for the last 26 years.... We can't sail our old 12' long course boards very well without a vertical dagger board... On a 12' board which is about 28" wide with the dagger around 24" to 30" deep and a cord of about 5" .. When the board speed would pick up we angle the dagger back into the sailboard to about 10% exposure just to give a little positive direction..and reduce the resistance.... Up wind is where is does best... I can relate .. Thx for the cool unassuming videos.. So from a Kiwi to an Aussie cousin ..don't quit now, you have many of us I'm sure, glued and waiting to enjoy your next project....

You also use a good size dagger board for the size of board you sail. I'm sure you notice it well, the effect of it being up or down. Thanks for your comment and input Stick. I spent a few years living in NZ, love it over there. All the best across the pond. 👍

Hi Tim, I've just binged the whole lot. I have to say my favourite bits were at the end of each one when you say, "Thanks for watching," as if the effort was all ours. I lolled every time. At first, watching the sheer amount of work you were putting in I thought you were utterly bonkers, but watching your footage at sea and then Malcolm's footage 20 years on, it seems bonkers not to put the effort in. Remarkable achievement. Well done, fella. Oh, and thanks for reading.

Hi Mrrolight. Thanks for your comment, and binge-watching them all, that is quite a session. I'm glad you liked the videos, and to know, they changed your impression at the end. Hi Tim, I have been studying your videos of the phases from start of the build to gettimg it into water. I love your story. This video on the daggerboard is by far the best and is convincing me to build a catamaran like yours. I need a boat that is seaworthy enough to circumnavigate the globe, economical enough to run and live on as I visit countries. The goal is to be able to explore Europe for example, tie it down in a port and travel overland then return to move on. The mediterranean attracts me. If you were me today, would you build the same design boat?

Tim; this is totally enlightening for me. I sailed a Granger Cat 7000mls back to NZ from Borneo mainly on the wind and usually in under 10kts. Pointing into the wind was so frustrating that we ran 1 engine a lot of the time and it put me off cats. Sometimes we did 120mls and only made good 40 when tacking. I like the way you back your ideas by making radical changes to the normal way of thinking. Keep it up and keep sharing.

Hi Mike. Thanks for your comment and feedback. It is nice to hear another's experience. Yes I too was disappointed in the beginning. Especially on a long trip like you did even a few degrees improvement makes a huge difference. Yes, it was a big effort tearing it all out and building a new one in, when I look back I wonder myself at the faith I had in my ideas. But it worked.. Cheers Tim

Great video mate. Good on ya. Our family had a 18 foot Hobie cat with the customary 2 boards. We wore it out. Used up 2 sets of sheets. Tried everything on it. It would point well with one board but it did crab more of course. I had the same idea. One bigger board is better than two smaller, but we were too busy sailing to build anything. But a board on that cat would need to be 12 ft long. LOL

Great to see another vid Tim! It's amazing that none of the major manufacturers have figured out that one big dagger board is better than two little ones yet despite having countless "experts" and computers at their disposal. Keep up the great work and best of luck on the kits. P.S. Do you have any plans on building another cruising cat that will utilize all of the improvements in materials and design that you've made from the first boat? Cheers.

Hi again Kfa! Good to hear from you. Yes, it's been a while.. And yes, it is amazing, I really scratch my head why so many do things the way they do.. I do have plans of building again and I'm underway designing plans for a cat very similar to TE, with a big board integral in the boat. I've got 2 small boat plans available now on my website and dagger board plans to come 😉. It's getting busy! Thanks for your comments Kfa. Cheers Tim
@KarlKarsnark
@KarlKarsnark 7 жыл бұрын
That's wonderful! I can't wait to follow your progress. You're a true inspiration, even to folks like me who have no real clue about sailing, or ship design. Speaking of which, I noticed that the big board on TE was to port. Did the fact that it was offset in such a way impede the performance? Would it be sensible to have a centrally located dagger board on the next design, or would that just be obtrusive to the layout of the saloon? Thanks again for all that you do and I hope that the new ventures are a great success. You deserve it!
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Kfa. I appreciate your encouragement. The daggerboard being on one side makes no difference what so ever to the steering or performance of the boat. I've tested it many times on autopilot, with GPS and just by feel, raising and lowering it on any tack angle makes zero difference to speed or heading. I sail down wind with it down. It is always down. It needs to be in a hull not in the air. So it's positioning is the best place to put it. I will be writing up a page for it on the website with a lot more info in the coming days. All the best! Tim
@robinbennett5994
@robinbennett5994 7 жыл бұрын
Some cats do have a central board, but it needs to be a bit longer to reach the water which means it more highly stressed. It loses some efficiency where it pierces the water because it can suck air down the low pressure side. Also, it can't retract vertically without getting in the way of the boom, so it would have to pivot.

So, area three times that of either of the original two cambered daggerboards that I guess were intended to be used alternatively. That had to make a difference! I am surprised, though, that there was no difference in helm balance from one tack to the other, given the distance off the boat's centreline that the new 'board is acting. We live and learn.
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Anton. Yes, I was surprised also, but after a lot of testing and trailing there was never any measurable difference. I sailed, and even motored with it, always fully down. It improved the steering, and the speed with even a hint of wind. Tim

Hi Mike. I designed the board myself. It will be included in the coming plans for the new Tokyo Express and the plans will also be available alone, for a refit. If you are interested drop me an email info@timwestonboats.com and I can give you more details. Cheers Tim

Interesting video. Does it matter for the board to be longer, (front to back), vs deeper in the water? I'd assume there'd be a point of diminishing returns, but you did the testing. Any difference, or would the sweet-spot depend on the boat it'self?
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 7 жыл бұрын
Hi BeachBow. The philosophy of the majority is high aspect ratio, as deep as you can and skinny fore and aft. In theory it sounds good but for me you need a fair amount of chord (front to back).
5 жыл бұрын
@@TimWestonboats In theory, the best aspect ratio is dependent on boat speed. So, long and skinny is best when going fast, but shorter and faster is better when going slowly.

Thanks Tim, as an Electrical Engineer, I am really like your engineering spirit on Tokyo Express. I want to build a 40' cat with cedar core method. Do you still have your old hull plans to make those mold boards ( just both hall and mid deck)?
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Osborne, and thank you. Your plan sounds like a great move, I think strip cedar is a great way to build. I do still have the plans, but they are not for resale. One boat only, from a set of plans.

Thanks Tim, No worries. I may use my house design software to layout 3D halls and deck. The dimensions and more details of hall and deck molds are ready to print out. My goal is an hybrid lightweight catamaran , using water tanks, battery banks as ballasts, electrical trim outdrive/radder/alternator combo design for versatility and simplicity. I really like your giant single daggerboard design, so an overall low draft cat is achieved. My private email: osbornebay77@gmail.com Best regards, Dale Peng from Oysterbay, Ladysmith, Canada

That's interesting - I'd always assumed the reason cats didn't go to windward was too much windage. OTOH TE looks a bit more streamlined than your average modern cruising cat.
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin. The streamlining would help a small amount but it is the board that makes the difference..
@robinbennett5994
@robinbennett5994 7 жыл бұрын
I guess you can overcome windage with more power - and in a strong wind you've got more than you need, but only so long as you can resist the lateral force, which is why the bigger board is important. Does that mean sailing closer to point where you might tip over or break something?
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 7 жыл бұрын
Having a bigger board in the water does make it more possible to capsize, if you are pushing it, because you can generate a greater capsize moment. It shouldn't mean you will break something. It is a bit like having a car with a bigger engine, you can go faster and climb steeper hills. The greater speed possible can get you into trouble, if you don't know how to drive but it can get you out of situations and be an advantage if you know how to use the power you have.

Excellent stuff you've done building her. Are there any cat designs that are free, with free licence to build them? And preferably with cnc files and a good tutorial. Something like an open source design?

Tim Weston I know a lot of work goes into making a boat design. And any work deserves payment. But for example at cnckayaks.com there is are lovely free, open source boat designs. I was just hoping that after all these years of cat designing there would be a similar thing. Cheers man.

I was on a junk today in Taihu lake (China) and was thinking about your video at the time. I have come back to make a comment. The skipper told me that without the keel boards down, there is no point in having sails unless all you want to do is run downwind. These junks have an extremely shallow draft and without the boards it just goes sideways. One thing that occurs to me is a question about depth. Why does the board need to be deep in the water? It is not like a monohull where you have a counterweight on the bottom. Why not have a board that runs long and shallow between the hulls? It would not take up any internal space and could be set shallow or deep just by changing the angle. If fast you could reduce drag by raising it. If slow you drop it down till close to verticle. Mounting would need to be strong, but should be possible.
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Terry. The skipper was correct, especially with the junks. The cats are similar, they will just slide sideways without a board. The board works in the same way as an airplane wing, the tip of the board generates a large part of the drag. A deeper, longer board has a higher aspect ratio, giving more area and lift, for the same tip losses, (more or less). The trade-off is structural, longer is higher loaded so it's a compromise how long you go. Tim
@nterry894100
@nterry894100 3 жыл бұрын
@@TimWestonboats Got it Tim. I will take a look at the loadings and decide which way to go. One surprising feature of the junks is that the keel boards are just lowered over the sides and strapped in place. Nothing fancy at all. Maybe the seaging ones of old Admiral Zhang He (Cheng Ho) 500 years back were different. I assume so.

Nice! Can't understand why all commercial cats are using two daggerboards........ It would be great to hear how you have designed this big one... what is necessary to consider.... can't find any books about it... all daggerboards that I see are straight ... not sure why... if they are angle like 45degrees this could avoid getting fishing net stuck to it...
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, RF. No, I can't understand either. The nautical community is always slow to accept change. After 5months work, I've just finished plans to build this board, with an improved shaped, detachable tip. Which also, won't get stuck in fishing nets... There is more to this board than meets the eye, but worth the effort. It made a huge difference to the performance of my cat. Regards, Tim. timwestonboats.com/daggerboard-te40/

Yes I have to agree, size dose matter, or at least that's what my beautiful wife says! Your work on Tokyo express interest me, have you books/planes for sale! I am looking to build a tri hull 49' similar but with the outer hulls load bearing with a single dagger board in the centre main hull. Can you send me a link/info on your stuff!

Hi Stephen, thanks for your comment. Ha, a little tongue in check, the title, but true. Like your wife says ;) I do have a book out, called "Building Tokyo Express". Just search it on Amazon, or head to timwestonboats.com/ebooks/ . Plans are underway now, for a completely updated version of TE. They will be available towards the end of the year. There is info on my website, above. Drop an email to me if you would like to know more, and I will keep you up to date on the progress of the plans. Regards, Tim
