It's tempting to look at other people's stories and think they had it easy or always 'succeeded'. However, the path to any worthwhile goal is NEVER straightforward. I was rejected by multiple top MBA schools - Wharton, Harvard & Indian School of Business before I got into the school that was the BEST outcome I could have hoped for. Sometimes life teaches you lessons in many ways...and failure is a great teacher.
In this video, I share with you my journey - why and how I thought about the MBA application process, analysis of what makes the difference between a successful and unsuccessful application, and my top 5 tips on applying to a top MBA program.
My goal is to hopefully help you feel more confident in your path, especially if you find yourself at the receiving end of setbacks and challenges right now. Remember - just keep moving forward.

3:13 The rejections I faced and possibly WHY

8:08 Analysis - difference between a successful and unsuccessful B school application
10:25 My TOP FIVE TIPS for your B school application

Really honest and genuine thoughts. Thanks for sharing these pointers Riya! I had one humble request for you -> As an engineer, I feel that getting into Management Consulting, would be really difficult since most work-experiences pivot around Tech and quite less biz stuff. Hence, could u make a video divulging into how can engineers model their engineering career, so as to be rock solid eligible for Management Consulting career, in case they get into a T10 BSchool?

Thank you Riya for listening to your subscribers! I was waiting for an MBA prep/experience video from you. I really liked the structured approach of this video. My two takeaways would be the importance of a mentor in life and the concept of failing forward. Idk why everyone only highlights the success and not the 50 failures that came up before that. Looking forward to more of such amazing content. Being an international MBA applicant myself i would really love to understand your approach on deriving tangible next steps of action from a failure (i have had quite a few of those in my journey). How did you deal with this ? If possible, it would be great to connect with you on some other platform to have your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Thanks Riya! This video is really helpful. I am also aspiring for a Global MBA. My short term goal post-MBA is to work in Management Consulting but I am having trouble figuring out my long term goal. I have heard a lot of people include aspects of social impact or entrepreneurship in their long term goals. Can you share your long term goal and any tips on how I can develop mine if I don't have any specific inclination towards Social Impact or Entrepreneurship?

Hi Riya, great video Just wanted to know the thought process behind the decisions of yours after your unsuccessful MBA applications. Did you make a sort of checklist (eg. demonstration of entrepreneurial skills, leadership skills, higher GMAT score) I am just curious to know if you compared your profile with the past admitted students of a particular Bschool (INSEAD in this case) or you just decided to do what you felt could benefit your profile and then, were able to truly communicate that story, decision-making in your application PS: It would be super helpful if you could highlight the points that you will be covering in the whole video in the form of list or something like that, it would be easier to follow a point to point approach of discussion. Just my opinion

Thank you Riya for such an insightful video. I just had one question in mind. You mentioned how crucial it is to have clarity on the type of work that one does before applying for a top B-school but I wanted to know if INSEAD or other international B-Schools accepts a fresher straight out of college with just about 1 year of experience? How much credibility does a candidate have if he/she is a fresher and want to join INSEAD/any top Bschool? Thank you in advance. :D

Hi Riya. Thank you for valuable insights. My question is, will my gpa of 3.3-3.4 in MS Industrial Engineering (from US) will be a dealbreaker? Also, how rigid is Insead about foreign language criteria? Thank you. :)
@riyachhabra
@riyachhabra 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Onkar - I don’t think GPA is a dealbreaker, if you have other elements in your profile that are compelling such as work experience, extracurricular, personal motivation. GMAT score etc. INSEAD needs you to know 3 languages - they can be any 3. Most Indians choose to learn French or Spanish as their third assuming they already know Hindi and English. You need to pass a certain language level to graduate. Not that hard to do tbh. Hope this helps!

@riyachhabra
@riyachhabra 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Priyanka - Not necessarily. An MBA can be an opportunity to pivot careers, and your background matters less than what you do in the business school. Strategy consulting firms especially are very open to diverse backgrounds. And with Physics, you can probably also find a home in Tech. I just uploaded a video today about career pivots - take a look. Hope that’s helpful!

How would you rate INSEAD(All campuses) Vs IIMABC in terms of Job opportunities

Nice information mam
@riyachhabra
@riyachhabra 3 жыл бұрын
Completely different audience and opportunity set. INSEAD is a global MBA (exact same across campuses) with a relatively experienced class, while IIMs tend to have fewer years of work ex and therefore the job opportunity set is likely adjusted. If you definitely want an international experience and career, INSEAD is your school. But if you only want to be super successful in business (and don’t care about global experience as much), IIM is a great launchpad. Disclaimer - I don’t have a ton of experience with IIMs (as I never applied - CAT score was never high enough!) so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.
