I have a cast iron bath tub in the back yard, in the shade I fill it with 68*F well water. When yard work is done I sit in it to my neck 'works great - keeps me from overheating and getting pout-y

You need 4 inches of space all the way around the freezer for the freezer to work properly. The condenser gets real hot on the outer part of the cabinet.

I am doing that but I'm building an external tank to soak in out of a metal water trough for horses. I'm running a pump out of the side of the freezer going into a hot tub pump from a salvaged hot tub that had a good motor and filter but a cracked tub. Little overhead cost . You could use salt water and sand to filter it out like a hot tub

I keep the filter running 24/7 unless I'm getting in. It not only filters the water but keep ice from forming.

Awesome review. I have a freezer setup as well after taking that XPT coaching cert last year and seeing all the benefits. Definitely gonna frame it out like you did! Looks great. Quick question, with that peroxide you got. How much of it did you use and did you dilute it at all. I’m just using basic 3% and not sure if it’s doing much since my water doesn’t look so crystal clear all the time. Thanks again for sharing.

Hey great job on the video. Just curious if this has held up with the silicon sealant since you posted. I have heard from several people that their seams ended up leaking and they got rust or that their freezer died from moisture getting through to the components using silicon. Thanks!

Just not sure how bad I want to make room in sauna rest room for a deepfreeze as I'm sure It can't stay outside. Great video and thank you for sharing this with us

Very informative and a GREAT SETUP!! hmmm never heard of Hydrogen Peroxide!! NO chlorine and then the fish pump thingy runs all the time, right? (that's what moves the water around to keep it from stagnating?) Thanks!

Correct, no chlorine and filter runs 24/7. Water filter keeps the bid debris out and also prevents ice from forming. I've since moved to ozone so I no longer need the hydrogen peroxide. More on that in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7JglqxjnbHQno0.html

Just use the polishing filter. The carbon is not needed for this purpose.

Looks great! Big question, I am 6’3 and was concerned it he 14.8 was not big enough for me to get shoulders under the water. What are the interior dimensions? They only give the exterior. Thx!

If you're 6'2", it will work but it will be tight. There are about 2" thick walls so subtract that from the exterior measurements. If you want more room, go with 18

Hi Troy! Great video. Building a chest freezer plunge this week! How are the seems holding up after a year? I was swayed towards JB water weld instead of Marine adhesive sealant 5200. Also, what is the material make/model on top of lid to prevent condensation? Thank you!

Awesome! So far so good. I did have to replace my first freezer after a year because the compressor went but I never found a leak so I don't think that caused it. JB is definitely a safer route but much more expensive and time consuming. The material is fabric with a plastic layer so water can't get through

Any thoughts if there is a benefit to the sudden plunge.. versus, something like being in a tub with room-temperature water, then adding 30 lbs of ice? It will of course take longer to reach the same temperature as the chest-freezer, but it may be much easier to do?

Most of the benefits from cold therapy begin around 2 minutes (@54 F or below) in so either approach can work as long as you're staying in long enough. You'll have to stay in longer if you take the gradual approach though.

Hope I understand this correctly. All the water cleaning is done manually right? By adding peroxide and physically removing debris? Just wanting to see if that is what your doing because electric rates are really high where I’m at and running a constant pump and filtration system would be costly

I use a filter which I run 24/7. The electric it uses is minimal. I have also now installed an ozone generator which runs 1 hour a day. More on that here troydelaney.com/upgrades-to-my-chest-freezer-ice-bath/ I only use H2O2 intermittently as a "shock" to the water.

Hi Troy, I picked up the marine land filter and as soon as I put it in the bath it stops working. I think it’s as a result of the water being too cold? Have you had this problem before? The filter will run for about one minute then switch off. This is the second filter I’ve put in my bath and have had the same issue. The difference between my bath and yours is mine has big chunks of ice on the water surface.

Yes but after 2.5 years of running, the internal coating is starting to peal off. Options to mitigate this are to apply pond shield, a pond liner and/or Line X. Here's another video I made with upgrades I've made since making this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7JglqxjnbHQno0.html

Definitely inside. That's how you prevent it from leaking into the freezer components.

Good video. I have one question. My chest freezer gets an extremly hot surface on the outside during cooling the water down. Is that normal? Does your freezer has this hot temperatures too?

If you're referring to one you initially fill it up, yes that's normal. What I do is add about 50-60 lbs of ice to speed up the cooling process so it doesn't have to run as long.

After 2 years, the interior coating is slowly chipping away. No rust though. The only way to prevent this is either Pond Shield liner or a pond liner.

How do you secure the marine land filter in the chest? It won’t suction to the inner wall because it’s textured so it just lays on its side and bobbles around a little

Mine isn't textured so the suction cups stick. You can just let it sit on the bottom and put something heavy on top of it. That will hold it in place.

Hi cold plunge community, I've got my 14.8 foot chest freezer caulked and set up but it's been two days and it won't get drop under 40 degrees Fahrenheit. How long should it take for the water to get to temp?

It can take more than two days. I typically drop 100 lbs of ice in it when I put fresh water in. This speeds up the cooling process.

No, the Inkbird Digital Thermostat (amzn.to/2SRZK7J) is set to keep the water at a preset range so it only runs when the water gets warmer than that preset range.

Troy, do you see the need for an epoxy or ozone machine addition?

I never used it but it would be a more permanent option than silicon. I think the ozone is a must. It prevents you from having to change the water as frequently (every 6 months vs monthly) and is probably the most thorough way to sanitize the water.

What exactly did you seal? Does the inside require any sealant at the bottom or area where the cold comes in?

I read somewhere that magnesium sulfate promotes rust. Any issues there?

As long as you don't have any exposed metal, you should be fine. I've never had that issue.

27/7 unless I'm in it. It doesn't use much electricity and it also prevents ice from forming.

If you left it running, the top would freezer over. But I have it on a remote thermostat which only turns it on to keep it at a certain temp. Plus I add magnesium salts which prevents it from freezing over.

There are a few general rules when it comes to cold exposure: The colder, the better (to a degree) The longer, the better (to a degree) The more skin that is exposed to cold the better For the minimum effective dose, keep this in mind: if it feels cold, it is cold and will likely elicit a cold shock response strong enough to at least boost your mood and challenge your comfort zone. Think “I really want to get out(!) but I can stay in safely.” THE EXACT TEMPERATURE DEPENDS ON MANY FACTORS: I suggest using cold that is uncomfortable but safe; there is no specific Rx for all. That said, the minimum effective dose of cold for metabolic health (activation of brown fat) is 15C / 59F for 11 min/week.

Tony, Thanks for the video I have set up mine with the O-zone generator but haven’t put the filter in yet.Not sure if it’s from the ancient sea salt minerals that you recommended but about a week after I change the water out I’m seeing small particles throughout the water. Is that from the sea salts not fully dissolving? Have you experienced this?

I've never had that happen to me. It definitely could be the salt not completely dissolved. I always move the water around until the salt is completely dissolved. I've also hear some people say the ozone coverts the salt into particles but I've never had that happen to me

@@sheathomasspinozzi5290 I had to replace the entire unit because my compressor went after the first year. Luckily, the Best Buy warranty covered it. But I don't believe that was related to a leak. I never saw any signs of a leak

Hi. Just bought this freezer. How did you build a platform underneath to support weight? Assume yiu didn’t put wheels on. Looks like at a min I need a piece of 1/4” plywood to make bottom flat to sit on ground. Thanks.

Correct, no wheels. And yes, 3 pieces of 1/4" boards (running deep, front to back) to support the bottom.

@@TroyDelaney the freezer came with a high density foam cap at bottom. Almost seems perfect to keep that cap on for support and go with it. Have you heard of anyone doing this

Does the outside exterior walls of the chest freezer ever heat up on you? I just bought one, and filled it up half way with water. dumped 60 lbs of ice in it, and plugged it in for the first time. the water temp is 46 degrees in roughly 8 hours. However, the exterior walls are VERY Hot to the touch. Has this ever happened to you ?

Yes when initially cooling down the side near the vent/motor does get hot just because it's running for so long but once you have it set a certain temp, it doesn't have to run all the time and won't get as hot.

It looks like the floor it’s on is concrete. Did you have to use 2x4 supports because of feet on the freezer ? If so couldn’t you just take feet off so it sits flat on concrete? Thank you

Frigidaire 14.8 CuFt amzn.to/38wg5FL Yes, I'm in Florida. My compressor died after a year but I'm not sure what caused it to die. I've since replaced it with another Frigidaire and haven't had a problem with it for over two years.

5'9", 165lb. Max for this size is probably 6'2" but it might be best to go to Home Depot or Lowes and sit in the different sizes. You'll get a few strange looks but that part of the fun of it 🙂

I don't use H2O2 anymore since I now have an ozone generator but when I did, I used about 32oz every time I emptied out and refilled it (~304 months).
