Question: Franky do you actually think you can build the deck by yourself just in 3 days? The best answer ever said: "If I slow down."

Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds kzfaq.infoUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. It's really inspiring to see how creative all these ordinary people are in making beautiful and useful spaces on a modest scale.

Be sure to use 2x10 joist hangers when framing 2x10 floor joist not 2x4 hangers as shown in this video. Also be sure to use 3" galvanized nails for the toe nailed locations of the joist hangers . On another note, on an elevated deck the balusters should be fastened on the inside note outside for additional safety as well as using more than one screw on each at the top of each baluster . Through time when the pressure treated lumber dries the screws can loosen and therefore if a child ever were to lean against them they could pop off.

Stan, great video. My opinion on fastening the hand rail posts is to drill through and bolt them, with the decks I have built I have made the hand rail posts have extra support to fasten to. ( I'm not sure how to describe it. It's something my pawpaw taught me a long time ago.)

Don't screw joist hangers. Nails have more sheer strength. You also can't attach a ledger to stucco. You must attach directly to the rim joist of the house. Don't notch guard rail posts, it weakens them.
@avid0g
@avid0g 5 жыл бұрын
No, the rim joist can be ripped out of the house when the deck collapses. Code requires solid connections to the interior joists (that have far more fasteners into floor sheathing). Or sometimes the sill plate or top plate are acceptable, since a collapsing deck will likely not leverage them out. Rail posts need connection to something stronger than the perimeter joist, like surrounding the post with blocking and tying the post to interior joists. Again, perimeter joists have bent outwards - spilling people over the failed railing.

Another option is to ditch the hangers and toe-"nail" (/screw) five-inch TimberLok's
@eschrader

Overall great tips. Thanks! Use simpson strong tie screws with the joist hanger brackets. They are hardened and designed to transfer the load. Also use proper sized joist hangers (not 2x4 hangers). Use stucco spacers (deck spacers) when attaching the ledger to stucco so water drains out.

Hey Eric! Not sure you'll get a chance to read this but I might need to install a ledger on my stucco house. I've read varying opinions on whether or not you can install a ledger over top stucco or if you have to take out the stucco. Do you have any opinions? If you can attach the ledger on top of the stucco with spacers, as mentioned, how do you know where the framing is so you are attaching the ledger to something solid? Thanks so much. Rebuilding my rotted deck and doing it myself. Appreciate the awesome DIY and carpentry communities.
@eschrader
@eschrader 2 жыл бұрын
@@theprofessordad9456 I used deck ledger spacers and ledger lock screws. I pre drilled the stucco and put a bit of polyurethane sealant in the holes for good measure. On the deck framing tops I used an adhesive backed tape to protect the top from rot. Worked well just wish I used heavy duty decking on top than just redwood 1x4 slats, it's been a year in front and 2 years in the back and they could use a re-staining. Good luck! I'm just a diy'er who watched a ton of deck videos and read up on local codes in Los Angeles for decks. Good news is city's have a lot of diy guides for decks.
@theprofessordad9456
@theprofessordad9456 2 жыл бұрын
@@eschrader Thanks so much for answering Eric! I'll look up those deck ledger spacer and lock screw options. When you predrilled the stucco, how did you know where to drill? In other words, does it matter? I was under the assumption that stucco itself is not structural and that you need to have the ledger attached to something structural like the underlying framing. If that's the case, I'm not sure where that is being concealed by the stucco. I'm actually down in Orange County! As for those diy guides from the city, is there a specific website you found those? Thanks again!
@eschrader
@eschrader 2 жыл бұрын
@@theprofessordad9456 I have a basement so I drilled a small test hole I patched later, looked for light on the other side and measured to get the stud layout. Only issue is some of that side of the house has termite rot so it wasn't as strong as I liked so I sistered a 2x4 to the bad stud then put the ledger lock screw into the good wood.

Really liked the video. Would have liked to seen washers on the lag bolts, longer joist hangers, and more attention to the flashing and weatherproofing on ledger board at the early stage. I've been looking for a 12in compound sliding saw. I'm going to rethink Makita because of the set back on the slide. Seems nicer when transporting too.

It's a pretty damn good job overall - looks great. I'm just wondering why you don't use a post stirrup for the posts though, just to raise it up off the ground a bit? I know it's treated timber, but still, I imagine a galvanized post stirrup would be stronger and more durable than a bit of rebar and the post resting directly on the concrete, for, what, $10-20 total extra cost.

In New Zealand our building codes state that you must leave a gap between the house and the deck boundary joist so water can escape through it and the air can dry it out. The blocks that are attached to the house must have DPC between them and the house as well.

Interesting to see how you guys do it in the states. Your laws are a lot more relaxed than ours. In New Zealand we require a council permit and plans drawn from a draughtsman for any deck over 1.5m. Also in most cases we concrete our posts into the ground. Which I know most other countries find strange

Well to give you an idea.. I live in the city in my state, the city has different building codes, compared to the county. But we also have to buy "fishing license" and "driver license" and "Conceal carry license" which we have to pay fees to renew every few years. BUT in some states you buy a conceal carry, or a fishing license and they last a life time. *Shrugs* Laws in the US are all over the place because some are really important and some are just their to milk productive people of their hard earned money.

Why aren't the deck boards and the top rails full length? There should NEVER be butt joints in the decking or rails if at all possible. Deck is under 20', full length material is available The screws In the just hangers is a big no no. They are not structurally rated. Every building code will agree with this. Simpson makes a structural screw for hangers if you don't want to use tico nails
