About The Local Knowledge Fishing Show:
The show Local Knowledge explores the culture of fishing itself and follows real life characters that spend their lives dedicated to fishing and the outdoors.
Local Knowledge focuses on the differing and often humorous viewpoints of two drastically different fishermen from opposite sides of the country. Ali Hussainy of San Diego, California is the President of BD Outdoors, the largest fishing site on the web. Capt. Rush Maltz is a born and raised Florida Keys fishing guide. Each is a master on their home turf, but the playing fields are leveled as they travel to strange waters to explore and learn new local knowledge.
Follow two friends as they explore both local and exotic fishing destinations in search of a new flavor of local knowledge. They not only dig deep into the fishing aspect, but the food, people and the culture of fishing that permeate a local and make it unique and special. They seek out a new kind of adventure off the beaten path.

Thank you for taking the time to publish this video. I use to make these exact same rigs when I was a kid - 50 years ago living in Alaska. We would routinely fish in 800 and sometimes 1500 fathom water. We first tried those old 16/0 Penn's, but replaced them with some home made contraption, made from a hose reel, when we often ran out of line - we used (Dacron back in those days). I'm sure glad we got rid of those Penn's - I don't know if you've ever tried - but you should reel in a 120 lb halibut from 5,000 feet only to lose it right before you get it on the boat. 50 years later I still remember it like yesterday......

great vid, very pretty rig. You might consider using dredge swivel-sleeves (makes for less connections), use a heavier main line & 2x wire hooks. What the about the disco light Ollie?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 10 ай бұрын
We have used the dredge sleeves but they chew away at the mainline after time so we switched to this set up. We like a Gem light above the swivel on the mainline for sure.

Great video. With my shallower rock cod rigs, I use 30lb fluoro for the main rig and 20lb mono going down to the sinker, so I don’t lose the whole rig if the sinker sticks in the rocks. Is there a reason you’re using full strength line for your sinker?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 10 ай бұрын
We like the heavier line because it doesn't twist and tangle as much. YOu can tie a 3 turn clinch knot to your sinker and it will release way before the mainline breaks.
@TheMachoGabacho
@TheMachoGabacho 10 ай бұрын
@@LocalKnowledge I’ll try that knot. I usually use a dropper loop or a snap swivel for my sinker so I can quickly change weights based on conditions.
@mikeeslinger4879
@mikeeslinger4879 Ай бұрын
Like the previous response, I usually just tie a couple of overhand knots that will slip/break if the sinker gets stuck. Also, you can use a weak or small snap swivel that will open up or bend out fairly easy.

I recommend using lower pound test leader that goes to the weight in case it gets snagged you only loose the weight instead of the entire rig.

Yeah. We do that for really craggy areas.

Have you tried the sleeve swivel crimps for your deep drop rigs?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 6 ай бұрын
I have. They end up cutting the line after a while. These last better.

Rather than a swinging hook crimped, if you snelled that hook on, its stronger, and you will get a much better hook up rate
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 5 ай бұрын
Maybe, but we make these 25 at a time. Crimps are fast and easy and work.

Do you think fluoro makes a difference for deep drops to the bottom?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 10 ай бұрын
Not for getting bites but for abrasion resistance.

What is the size of crimps with what the line thickness?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 3 ай бұрын
130# line and a 1.17 or I size crimp.

This is the hard way to make a deep drop rig. They make in line swivels that slide on to the main line and crimp them where you want them. Your rig has to many crimps.
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 ай бұрын
THose crimp on 3 way swivels chafe the line eventually and cut it. You're $20 goes with it. We have tried both and think this is the way to go. You just set up an assembly line and you can knock out 20 of them in a little over an hour. Good luck.
