Good idea, nice job. Reminded me of a few years back we had little shelves that would hold are crap, CB radio, ....... not as deep as yours but enough to hold a CB radio. lol

Brilliant video! We're about to build a headliner ourselves, this was very useful. Well explained and great b-roll. A shame it 'only' has 11k views.

Awesome! Personally I would think about adding more steel to its structure. Since in an.accident it might all come crashing down on your head like this. But that's not something that would happen that quickly (thankfully)

Thanks for another great video! Did you order the template? I drive a former shuttle bus and would like to build a headliner, but am unsure how to get a good template for my vehicle.
@EXPLORISTlife5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, the template and hardware comes in a kit together: amzn.to/2H6X7tP It's a little pricey for some hardware and a template but that template saved us SO much time as opposed to fitting, scribing, trimming, fitting, trimming some more... lol We are definitely going to be making more templates going forward.

On Vancilary's website, they show the headliner brackets mounted above and underneath the headliner. Underneath seems more structurally correct, but above looks better. Do you know if they have a preferred installation?

What type of things do you put up there? If you could do it over would you make the lip higher so stuff doesn’t fall out when driving? I want to do the perfect shelf so I don’t have to redo it, it’s hard not knowing which style is best 😅

Window/windshield coverings mainly. We never had things fall off; but also didn't stuff it to overflowing.

That lip probably did as much as the thickness of the plywood for making that shelf "stronger." I'm not really a fan of those shelf mounts though. I mean they are probably just fine, but it is a rather weak way to mount a shelf. Just don't use the shelf to store your hoard of cast iron skillets.
@Regi8695 жыл бұрын
Donald Endsley what is a better way then?
@EXPLORISTlife5 жыл бұрын
These brackets and mounting method will be strong enough for 99% of people. I was skeptical before as well, but they are plenty strong.
@donaldendsley61995 жыл бұрын
@@Regi869 Metal is weak on compression, having the the mounts hold the shelf by hanging is better, as it places the mounts in tension (where metal is strong). Also there is no triangulation with the shelf mount design. Triangulation allows compressive forces to be transferred into tension. Adding a piece from the shelf holes to the van mounting holes (forming a triangle) would make the shelf mounts stronger. The downside to that is it would add a hazard to the cab in the event of an accident. As the shelf mount is currently designed as you add load onto the shelf the shelf deflects. As the shelf deflects it will pull the mounts away from the cab walls, possibly pulling the mounts to the point of bending. So to make it better the mounts should hang from the van walls, and have a triangle shape. Ideally the shelf would sit on (and be secured to) the base of four tetrahedrons, with each tetrahedron secured at three (or more) places to the van walls, with the base on the bottom.

In short... this design is fine for 99% of people... lol

There's always THAT guy ready to critique a video. We get it... it's not suitable to use as a bunk for a big person. It's an overhead storage shelf, for what most people would use for lightweight gear.
