Brent shows us a fundamental design fix that if we can get it right our houses will look so much better. Brent is amazed that even on multi-million dollar houses, the same bad things keep getting built.

Just want to say thank you Brent. You are putting into words and reason those things that always just feel "off" on houses. Your teachings and explanations are definitely a help.

Hi, Brent, excellent video. Your comment about dividing a column into thirds and tapering the top two thirds reminded me of a story I read years ago about the design of the Parthenon in Athens. They said that there wasn’t a straight line in the whole building - not because it had settled over the millennia but because the architect had to correct for all the “optical illusions”. Not only are all the columns tapered but the temple floor has a slight arch in it from front to back and also from side to side, and then they said that if you drew a line up along the outer edge of each temple column and extended it up into the sky all the lines would converge at a point that was about two miles above the earth. All this was done to correct for optical illusions: at a distance - if you "arch" the floor it will look flat, if you taper a column it will look straight and if you angle a row of columns inward they will all look perfectly vertical. It's astounding that they knew how to do this over 2000 years ago.

Thank you Brent. I am currently learning so much from you. I am planning to build my home in a few years. I am a young new business owner doing interior trim. You and Richard are huge role models for me. Thanks again for all you are doing.

So helpful to understand the theory of how things should be done. It would be even more helpful to have a dimensioned drawing with specific moldings called out so we can duplicate doing it right.

Thank you for explaining why new architecture trying to mimic old rarely is pleasing to the eye. Good to understand why it often does look cheap, shallow, devoid of any real visual charm or aesthetic. And I thought it was just me!😃

I look forward to these every Wednesday and perfect timing! I’m reworking the porch design on my new house build now before we finalize the truss design and I’ve been hoping for a video like this to help make sure I get the details right. Thank you as always for putting this great information out there for us and for FREE no less ❤

Love this video! Would you ever do a video on what makes a good porch with vernacular columns? My husband and I are looking to build our colonial revival house with one and we would love to get it right!

Hi im stumped when it comes to my 1950s house. Currently saving for a renovation and watching your channel makes me want to get it right. 3 fireplaces and large front porch big enough to be sun room with 2 doors and small back porch. I cant seem to find anything on 50s build. I would really appreciate it if you could explain how and why houses were built this way. Thanks

Brent you're going to leave so many owners of expensive homes deflated and dispirited by giving drive by reviews of their porches, pointing out the architectural facade designs they spent so much money on are just a hodgepodge of random Greco-Roman elements placed in confused and incorrect arrangements, out of proportions, with mismatched styles. It's almost like these McMansion designers really don't have a clue and just throw stuff together because reasons.

I always enjoy your videos. What also really bothered me about the second example is the tiny porthole openings flanking the arch. They are too small, and there is no historical precedent for the iron bars covering them. It just looks dumb.

It looks like the arch in the second example doesn't line up with the pillars either. The pillars should be moved an inch or two further apart.

Gosh, what are those grates doing over those upper, round windows? Maybe it's because Halloween approaches, but they look like spiders. Also curious: Can you tell us about those vases behind you? Is that something you collect? Thanks for another edifying video!
@BrentHull
@BrentHull 10 ай бұрын
Haha, good point. Yes, those are vases I designed and had Vasyl carve. They are an eternal flame vase. These were popular in the 17th century.

That arch looks weird as it has not thickness. It's suppose to reflect stone structure but it's thin like a stage set. I would have designed a barrel vault as well instead of those that high ceiling space.

Seems like you weren’t pulling any punches in this video. A bit of “where do I start”? I can’t help but think “entasis” presses the flaming red cost button for many architects and contractors. Or is it laziness? A tube is so much cheaper and easier to fabricate.

Skinny columns, They can't support the WEIGHT of the architrave above it. The parts have to make a coherent whole. Call in Vitruvius!!!!
