Great video mate, do you have any more info about angling the brace. I’ve got quite a large double gate to build (about 2200 in total). Each gate will be double braced just like you have demonstrated. The only concern I’ve got is making sure my brace angles are perfect. Thanks in advance

If this is a gate wouldn't it be better if the pickets had a small gap between them? After all it will be out in the weather. So it can expand in damp weather contract in dry weather?

I would prefer to see vertical stiles or at least one on the hinged side to improve the transfer of loading from the braces to the hinges. A stile on the side of the catch will give more rigidity in a taller gate but adds weight and is probably a judgement for the particular situation.

Hey... you can use 4x2.. just take into account the weight aspect of the gate with the post etc... also I like to use 5x1 as it's a nice wide span to hold all the boards together if it was narrower it wouldn't be supported enough for me...

Yes there sure is... if you screw 2 bits of wood on either side of the gate... about 1 inch gap.. and make some wedges you can tap the wedges in and as they get thicker the wood will move in

I was surprised to see the T&G boards clamped tight (or were there spacers there between each one?). No room for expansion. I made a similar gate one summer and even though I left decent gaps, the boards swelled so much in winter that the gate bowed.

What a great no-nonsense video. I was looking at the Wickes gate kits and thinking 'I can do better than this for less'. I'm fairly handy, but this sort of project is a 'big' one for me as I normally don't have to be mm accurate. Is there any sense in gluing the T&G or the ledges and braces, or will that cause problems with expansion/contraction.

hello there so I should of explained a little bit more on this so the the top brace will start on the opposite side to the hinge .. then you just copy that for the bottom brace .. as if you was to look at the gate and vision it dropping.. the weight from the top of the gate will spread the loads down to the bottom hinge..? hope that make sense

Sorry bud but i wouldn’t make an external gate out of that stuff. It will shrink/expand and as it’s not pressure treated no amount of paint/coatings will protect it from rotting, water will get into the tongue/groove which is unprotected. Sorry to be negative

@gbwildlifeuk8269
@gbwildlifeuk8269 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnlever6696 its simple john! An inch is 25.4 millimeters so 10 inches is 254.00mm. If you prefer cm just move the decimal point one place left. 25.4cm. With practice you can work it out quick in your head. 1ft 2in 350mm or 35cm. 3mm is approx 1/8, so 7/8 is 7x3=21mm. Knowledge is only memory mate and you more you memorise, the easier it is 👍

gbwildlife uk honestly I’ve tried mate. I really struggle with it. I’ve always used mm and worked with my uncle on and off for 20 years. I worked with him one day and all of a sudden he is using inches and expected me to. I tried but nope. I just don’t get the fractions. I think any form of measurement that has to be fractionated should be avoided. Then when I watch videos that’s all about inches my head falls off haha.

Why, oh why, no glue..??.. Applying about 10 pence worth of glue would #1 made this gate a lot, lot stronger.. #2 removed any voids from where the wood is joined, thus keeping out any water.. #3 if this gate lasts years and years longer than one made by one of your competitors, that's going to do wonders for your reputation as a craftsman.. I cut up a similar sort of gate not long ago, for fire wood, which had been treated twice a year with a proper, oil based treatment.. Said gate was in perfect condition on all external surfaces, which was testimant to how well it had been looked after.. The only place it had rotted was behind All of the ledges, and ALL of the braces, thus proving my point.. A little bit of glue wood have prevented water ingress behind, and all would have been good.. I fear you work will go the same way..
