In this video, I briefly explain how to build and use a gravel sifter. For more information, see my blog at idratherbewriting.com

Thanks for sharing, Tom! You gave me some good ideas for my own sifter. (I even called my brother and told him about your video.)

Thank you. And I loved hearing your baby in the background. 💛

Well built and the sifter looks great too.

Brilliant Video - I have exactly this task (separate rocks from dirt in my yard) so I will build exactly this. And the bonus idea of building it 'wheelbarrow-sized' is my biggest takeaway - I was going to build it bigger, but that would have been pointless.

Good idea to rest it on a wheelbarrow

I have a suggestion, the title should be changed on how to “use” a sifter rather then “make” one.

How to NOT build a Gravel Sifter... bruh

Hey Tom, I know this video was posted years ago, but do you have rough dimensions for how big you build it and what size wood you used. Looks like 2x6", but wasn't sure. Would love some help.

As big as you need it to be and the size of the wood doesn't really matter either. It's honestly just a wooden frame with a wire mesh attached to it. The thicker and heavier the wood you use, the heavier it will be, but it will also be sturdier and able to hold more gravel and larger rocks. The downside is that you'll likely have to attach a leg to prop it up on an angle or rope to make it a swinging sifter.

Thanks, but the key thing I am trying to find out - what's the size of the screen?! Several people made videos on making these. and none mention screen size : )

the screen opening looks like a 1/4 inch. I found a roll of it at Lowe's

I did this and probably made mine a bit too large and heavy... Easy enough to make a smaller one.

Yeah, mine is only about 60cm x 40cm, and I find that a good size. I just shake mine from side to side. It's hard on your back, but it gets the job done.

My guess is the first born task oriented nerd is an engineer. I will have one of those built in an hour.
