Neodymium magnets are super strong, and can be used in all kinds of ways. In this video, I show you how easy it is to build a beautiful magnetic knife holder! Knife blocks are a great way to store your kitchen knives, and this magnetic knife rack design saves counter space by storing the knives vertically against the wall where they are out of the way but always within reach.

This was a very good DIY video. I appreciated the step-by-step descriptions and this is the best by far of any of the knife block videos I've seen on KZfaq.

Cheers for the video, most helpful I've seen for wooden knifeblocks thus far. I know the size of the magnets is 60x10x3 as you'd mentioned, however do you know the pull strength?

Hi Chris! Here is an affiliate link to the exact magnets I used in this video: amzn.to/2QisdX5 From the product listing, it says they have 18 lbs of holding power, with direct connection. Good luck with your project!

I've had those drywall screws break up heaves of material from the wall. I recommend always removing some of the drywall material with a drill to avoid that. Same way as you would an would screw to keep wood from cracking.

That's a good tip - especially if you are putting in a really large anchor. Thanks for checking out this project!

How much timber was covering the magnets on the front side? Thanks

I believe I took it down to about 3mm. Get it as thin as you can, without risking popping through. Good luck!

Funny you mention how brittle they are. Im doing a project very similar to this and its on hold while I order more because like 5 shattered in the exact way they did for you, such a pain!

I used "Heavy Duty Keyhole Hangers" - I bought a pack of 50 of them off of Amazon. This is the exact product: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FMO0LA2 - Note: I am not affiliated with this product, or Amazon at all. Thanks for watching!

Hey, do you still use this? I'd really like to make one Iike yours but I'd like to mount mine vertically. Would you be interested in doing a quick experiment to see if the magnet layout you used is strong enough to hold a knife if the block is vertical and the knives are horizontal?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY Жыл бұрын
@@nodnodwinkwinkV I gave this to my niece, so I don't still have it. However, as I recall it was probably not strong enough to hold knives in the position you describe. Unless the handles are extremely light… But if you have high quality knives, they likely have heavy enough handles that they won't stay out at a horizontal position. Good luck!

Beginner Woodworking skills and beginner thought processes... from picking out the area of wood most prone to bowing due to the grain pattern... to your choice in tools... choice in magnets (why not round so that you can drill holes)... to clamping (clamp a deep F-Clamp to the ends of the wood and then clamp down the clamps).... to working with a router... to using a very non-durable finish made for cutting boards. There is zero reason to use a food grade finish as you are not cutting food on your knife block. READ the can for the finish... it's made to be re-applied continuously to keep a cutting board from growing bacteria. I bet that the can also says to thin the first couple of coats first to allow it to soak into the wood... then put on a finish coat. I've been using Watco products since I was a kid... but no reason to use any oil finishes here.

Why not just drill it out instead of route? Just set your depth guage. Jeez.
