How to Build a Mason Jar Honey Super

I got this idea on building a mason Jar Honey Super from the Fat Bee Man (KZfaq user fineshooter). Fatbeeman is a commercial beekeeper that has a really fine KZfaq channel. In it he shares a lot of really good information.
I saw his video where he was showing mason jars that had comb built into them. He then tells how this comb honey sells for a large premium. He can do that because nobody can figure out how the comb was put into the regular mouth jars.
Its actually pretty easy if you let the bees do it for you.

This is fantastic. I'm building it tomorrow. Bees came to my garden last summer looking for home. So I'm hoping they will come back this year 🤞

When you said you were going to screw the lids down to the base I was so excited because the first time I ever watched one of these I asked myself why don't they just screw the lids down so it's easier to remove the jars and they're more sturdy I'm not a beekeeper but that just made sense to me so thank you for doing that

Such a shame it didn't work out for you. It looked really interesting. Could this be used as a feeder for the bees? Put in all your quilting around the jars and top with more quilting and then put your top cover on it? Seems like it would be nice for them to have stores ready to go into winter.

You show a very thorough process of making this. This isn't new. Historically, honey comb in a jar was done on top of skeps. I was trying to figure out how to do it with a Langstroth. Thanks to you and the Fat Beeman for the idea. I'll be trying this with a few hives. It's cleaner than cutting chunks of honey and placing them in plastic boxes to sell. And, no department of Agriculture to inspect the processing facility. No board of health snooping around either. Perfect.

We had a poor flow this year too, I would suspect that a heavy nectar flow is needed for this to work. I would look at it as getting bees to draw on plastic foundation without wax on it. It's tough but is done with strong nectar flows. What state are you located? I'm Southeast Pennsylvania and the spring flow is short and intense. Then that's it. No fall nectar flows at all.

I would think that if you cut the wholes a little larger so the lids fit in snuggly and epoxied them in it would give a tighter and more secure fitting of the jars wiht out risking anything or dead bees from falling on the inner li and potentially contaminating the jars

Brother, you didn’t think this through. You can’t top up any jars with this setup - you either need to wait until all jars are empty or lift the whole tray off and quickly flip it over, spraying syrup in the process. This is just a 100% bad idea.
@ogradus

Everything good except you stained it with lacquer. Poor bees have to live in that strong smell. I'm sure they don't like that. You're supposed to use untreated wood.

+David Nash I did some stomping around and found some information hopefully to help you. This pdf (had to share the search page because the link was not extractable) says the hive should be a strong, established colony with a first year queen and to affix strips of comb to the inside of the jars. (I'd also try spraying some 50/50 sugar water on the combs to speed them up in comb building). Ideally, it looks like, you do this on a strong honey flow. Here's the search page, it'll be the first article: duckduckgo.com/?q=build%20jar%20honey%20super+site:wasba.org&kd=-1

Cryogenic blue or crazy glue is brittle and so it may shear and your lids would fall off. Because you used screws as well this is probably not a problem, but the hot glue would still give you a better seal which would withstand the weather better. Hope that helps.
