I love these videos, cuz it shows the exact situation. A solid relative way to think about it. There was another video doug did where hes going over an entire tourney he played in. And he tries to guess what he did before he advances the replay. Based on everything, whos in the hand, stacks, his holdings, the board. It was good.

As much as bluffing needs to be nefed, I think the small blind needs to be buffed. I think a third card or 15% higher rake would be reasonable.

I agree with Doug's options of either calling of folding. I would myself fold a lot in these spots as the cards we are holding will make us lose money. Because of reverse implied odds, we cannot really get enough value when we are in the hand. As played with the flop call though, against a bad reg, call the flop, fold the turn. Against a good reg, call the flop, call the turn and fold the river. These are on top of the card analysis you guys did. If you dont mind feedback, I would have put more emphasis on the overall tournament. Chip stacks, spr, tournament stage, overall table feel, preserving the stack. When you 3bet preflop, how do you proceed on this board? Bet the flop, bet the turn and check fold to a good raise? If so, how much do you bet on the flop and turn? Great effort. Thanks a lot.

After the last tournament I played, playing conservative and waiting for good hands isn't gonna cut it because most of the time you get bad hands, so you go call the flop and turn or bluff more.

Love the video! Would love more of these hand history tournament reviews. Also I have a question: If I split my bet sizing on the turn (from opponents perspective) do I bet smaller as a bluff when I have a stronger draw, like nut flush draw and bet bigger when I have something like open ender?

Hey Doug my name is Tom I'm 52 years old playing poker for 10 years and never watch any videos or had anyone who really knows what there talking about teach me the ins and outs of the game. If I want to beat the best I needed to learn from the best. So now I decided to check you out. To see what you had to say. I really enjoy your break downs on how to play in different spots. I have watched about everything you posted on the theory of how to play your hands as well as some other stuff you have on you tube..All in the last 2 weeks. I'm on my way to Montreal to play the Party Poker million tomorrow. I played day 1 on line rather then going all the way to Montreal and get knocked out 1st day . I used your tips and made it to day 2 live on May 7th with 2.7 million in chips I finished 5th in chips. I know it's a long haul still. But what you showed me I used in different spots and well it worked. I understand that I will still need to get lucky. But now I'm maximizing my wins and minimizing my loses. Not over betting for information and a lot more.Which give me more chips to play with. I know so much more now and I know as long as I play using your tips and of course mixing my game up.I know this will be my 1st tournament using what I learned from your videos. But I feel like a different player and I am going to win this thing. I just feel like I have so much more knowledge about the ins and outs of the game. Hi Doug, first I like to thank you for what you do to poker community, it's just simply great! My question is how to maintain a chip lead in a ten handed poker tournaments of 30 minute levels before the first bubble. For the past five tournaments I had a literally a chip lead but I manage to get busted right before the first bubble of the tournaments!

As a lab member these KZfaq vids are all worth revisiting since they are chock full of information that was lost on me prior to learning lab strategy. I have been playing cash games for years when I was younger I just ran so bad in tournaments and couldn't take the variance. When you play everyday and have bills and kids you can't be on the tournament circuit trying to win flips especially when I know I can grind certain games with consistency but I need to start playing tournaments again after pandemic non existent action in Northeast. Good content here listening to two guys that are proven players the best learning I ever had was on dinner break with a group of guys at WSOP just chatting with guys on what they did in spots it's best way to get better.

At the 39:30, the bet small, bet big is a pretty good way to bluff bet at the smaller stakes. Most players at that level play faceup when facing this type of bet.

Poker was much funner in these days where they are discussing theory and thinking through it rather than running through a solver.

More videos like this please. I want poker coaching like this without paying, bc I'm busto af.

The Ad4d hand on the Jh2s5d hand... I like call vs. raise due to the stack size of both other players. If you raise and they jam you have to fold. You are getting a good price on your call.

I think checking again on the turn with jacks is a mistake. If they have the ace they probably would never check twice and jacks should bet to prevent queen or king from hitting the river.

Anyways, why not folding the A4d on the turn, guess you were almost sure was losing except when hitting a miracle 3 on the river. And also, pretty bad call for KJ, also maybe folding on the turn was the best choice, when he changes the size bet or he got a lot of value beating KJ far away or he got a monster draw and u'll not be calling a river that's a club or straight card. the last hand is interesting. he could have AQs, AJs, JQs, KQ as well. given that he raised preflop. its a ok fold. but I would go all in on river for max pressure, only 2 hands on river would beat me, which is 99 and AJ(maybe a distant JJ). wait for the river normally kills your hand. if the other guy wins on the river, at least you did a better choice, and he was lucky. its my way to see it

Interesting. In the first hand I think JJ has better removal than T9s. These Jacks are blocking QJs to 1 combo. Anyway love this vid, hope there'll be more.

I thought this about x jamming the river in the last hand: If we get there sometimes otr with exactly KcTc and x jam over the river pot bet, with what combo do you balance that out as a bluff? Something like exactly what we really have - KcJx in which case we have to pick the suit of the kicker, (let's say diamonds), randomize it, and even then if randomizer lands on diamonds telling us this is the time to go for it we should flip a coin to make it even less combos? Actually since combinatorially speaking we arrive on the river with one combo of nuts (KcTc) and three combos we wish to bluff some of the time (KcJd, KcJs, KcJh) then we should ask randomizer which suit we should xjam and then actually flip a coin? Kinda struggling to decide if we want to block Kc or actually want villain to have it? Also is KcTc only hand we xjam river for value when we get there like that? Interesting spot, I could listen to to Pratyush and Doug discussing poker and going through hands all night long, Pratyush the Pussy Lover and Doug Polk the Poker Fork.

So I have question. Not played many tournaments but wondering if I made a good decision. Was playing a local daily tournament with an $80 entry. Was down to the last two and I had 204k and the other guy had 510k. 1st pays $900 2nd pays $540 I’m admittedly not very good short handed or late in tournaments, as I’ve not had a ton of experience. Blinds were 5-10k 1k ante. So I had roughly 20bb. The chip leader was definitely a better player and he offers me to chop it $820- $620 and I accepted. After the fact, I wish I had played it out just to get the experience, as I think it would be worth more than the $80 in the long run. And maybe I could’ve gotten lucky and binked the $900. But I felt like he offered a decent deal and I took the $620. Thoughts?

Hi Doug, excelent content, quick question. When you ask Prat about what he would jam for balance on the river on the A4s hand, I got to thinking, isnt this a spot where you would basically never want to bluff? Just because since his range is so strong he is never folding any value hand that he is betting, at which point turning a hand like KJ into a bluff would seem bad just becaue he doesnt have a single hand in his range that you are behind which he will fold, so when he is completely airballing you have it as a bluff catcher. Think the river is more of a spot (like you break it down) of what hands can i shove for value considering his range to be super nutty, unless your reasoning is that you think you can get him to fold a hand like AQ or AK by shoving river? So yeah, sorry for the rant, just wanted to ask if considering these things, if balance in such a "unbalanced" spot is necessary to think about too much. If you reply to this thank you so much!

I really like talking about hands in this way... maybe also with some match calculations :-) but unfornately for me don´t have poker friends on the same level so have to keep just searching throught the internet.

Essentially on the first hand it was Queens or nothing, but I do agree, I wouldn't have called that bluff without having a Queen blocker.

Great 3b sizing with JJ in the first hand, how long ago was that? I feel you'd go bigger these days

In the final hand, if we're going to give him 2 pot size bets when he turns his set, and at least 1 if he rivers it (let's assume turn goes ch/ch when villain misses), then doesn't our flop call have massive reverse implied odds (RIO)? In this hand, we end up losing 7k chips because we called a 300 chip bet on the flop as a massive favorite. How often do we have to trap him for future bets with his air in order to make up for the times we pay off hands that improve after the flop? Quite a bit it seems. I understand the wa/wb situation we are in on the flop, but isn't there an argument to be made for raising for equity denial, RIO considerations, and as a general strategy of attacking dry boards with a balanced range?

You like a check raise with A4 and a backdoor straight draw? So what would you do if someone 2.5* your bet which use to be standard to knock out flush draws and so on? If I had ace-jack I would probably reraise, I would definitely with kings or queens and I would have probably raised the same or more or even all in against a big stack.....

Am I the only one who got really lost in hand 1? The raise call by villain and check/check/bet line screams Kx Qx or a straight bluff, with an occasional Ax in his range. I feel that after check/check flop the turn bet should be enough to win the hand, or if he calls, shut down on river. The check/check/jam line makes no sense, because I have no idea what you can rep besides KQ or maybe QQ, with AA being so slim. If your opponent has an A your AA line makes no sense, and then once you get to river and he bets, its a Ax pre or KQ/KJs bet. Either way, not too sure why there was no turn bet because if villain has Ax he calls and you can shut down, or if he has KQ, KJ etc he will likely fold or maybe float/check river.

in the first hand can some one explain why the AT guy or Polk with the JJ didn't bet flop like pot to protect against flush or straight draws ?

KJ hand... what do you think of leading from SB to make them fold these smaller pocket pairs, especially when they are under 30BB like here, feel like they might often fold to a bet there.

I know how to get a stack, but how do I get a sack as big as Doug's?
