I am going to show you how to build a Motion Sim Racing Rig out of basic parts anyone can get.
So start your journey here! This is a true DIY Motion Simulator! Here's how to do it on the cheap!
00:00 I will show you how I built this 3 DOF motion racing simulator out of basic parts
00:15 pre lockdown Logitech setup
00:50 x simulator forum PGSAW 50:1 crab pot puller motors 12V
01:00 parts Arduino uno and IBT-2 Motor Controllers
01:22 both motors working on with SMC3 software
01:50 I started designing my rig
02:15 Christmas gift - stationary rig - had to tear it apart!
04:00 Building the seat frame
04:45 Bought a cheap MIG welder to weld metal sections together
05:10 U joint from the junkyard
05:50 designed and built motor mounts
06:12 added traction loss motor and my WILD first test Drive!
06:43 Added VR oculus Rift CV1
07:00 recent upgrades Thanks for watching! DMAX
50:1 12volt motors just search Ebay for GEAR MOTOR 12 VOLT GREAT FOR SAWMILL/CRAB POT PULL/FEED/SIMULATOR 75-80RPM 50:1 (sold by PGSAW in Canada)
Hall Effect Potentiometers DIGI-Key and others PN 987-1392-ND
www.digikey.co.uk/product-det...
Arduino UNO R3 - amazon. I have also used the cheaper ELEGOO clone.
www.amazon.com/Arduino-A00006...
IBT-2 motor controllers up to 43amps (which is a lot!)
www.amazon.com/dp/B00WSN98DC?...
other motor controllers you could consider using are JRK12V12 or Sabertooth but I use IBT-2's
XSIMULATOR forum - Info specifically for arduino/IBT-2 for 1 to 3 Motors. You can use up to three motors per arduino. But you each motor needs it's own IBT-2 controller.

Awesome job but may I suggest finding someone w/ experience in high end electronic installs (home theater, car audio/ video, etc) to help clean up your wiring a bit. I've found a second set of eyes is always beneficial especially on longer term projects. Incredible ingenuity nonetheless!

Juan, You are probably right.. But these are both just 'test' simulators. super basic and just testing parts out to see what happens.. I actually plan on building a real motion rig and building in wiring tunnels etc into the frames but have not started that project yet.. Soon though, I'll concentrate on getting things a bit more 'permanent' Thanks for the comment! Dave

Thanks so much for this overview. When i get some time I would love to build one and this broke it down into easy pieces to understand what I would need to do. Thanks for taking a look! It's really just a bunch of parts that work together pretty well. Takes a little time to build it. But by making it yourself, if something acts weird, you know what it is and it's usually pretty cheap to fix. If something goes haywire with a commercial rig, you have to send it in. We all pretty much use the same components anyway (from what I can see). In any case, this thing is an absolute blast to drive in VR. Now with the Wind Sim, it's even Cooler haha DMAX😀

Nice! Tell you what though.. you dont need a very good pc to run the motion. I have a couple series where I used the worst laptop and it runs the game and the motion system at the same time.. The real reason to get the better PC would be for using VR which takes a lot of resourses.. The motion programs require hardly any processing power as all they do is read the game telemetry I/O

Great Comment and observation.. Yeah. 3 years ago I barely knew what any of these things were.. I did a bit a poking around on YT and found X simulator.net. Used the info to build my first motion sim. I had no idea what any of this was except I did like Grand Turismo on the play station with a controller but watching a few things made me think.. I can do that too - but didnt see any videos on it.. - So there we go. I decided to post up some stuff cause it worked pretty good. I have a new video coming out in the next couple days on the COMPACT simulator . Hope you have time to watch.. I'm working on the edit right now. And thanks for your comment.. Keeps me plugged in and helps me remember to keep posting stuff. Dave

@@DMAX_DIY have you looked into / found / built anything using the piston style D box style ? I’m really thinking that’s the way to go as that seems to be the most popular and highly touted motion platform these days. If I can find the hardware ( I haven’t started really trying yet ) and there are software solutions to use it (which clearly there are) then I may try to go that route. Any suggestions or have you come across other DIY piston style ? I don’t really know what else to call them. But it’s what D box uses , one on each corner of the rig.

@@SticksAandstonesBozo so I used to mess around with a lot of pneumatic actuators back when I was involved in the Halloween Fright scene.. a long time ago. So I do read about these (electrical screw assemblies (as opposed to pneumatics) and I see the benefits. I would suggest looking up " six degrees of flight" - on YT he has not posted in a while but he was using this type of actuator.. also I am in contact with "MOTION simulators" on YT and sort of on Facebook, which I dont look at that often.. Many of those guys are building the same things.. 3 DOF, 6 DOF etc using the DIY actuators. I just have not had a chance to bite off that much yet.. YET.. Hi Dave, first of all I have to say I think it's terrific what you've created. I am totally enthusiastic and would like to build myself such a motion simulator. The first question I have is, how did you determine the dimensions of your rig? Did you take a template from the web? Or what are the dimensions of your rig? Before I buy the necessary square tubes, I should know what quantity I need. To the square tubes still the question, what thickness do they have? I would have taken tubes with 1.5748" x 1.5748" for the main frame and 1.1811" x 1.1811" for the seat construction, each with a thickness of 0.12". Sorry, in Germany we have other size specifications and I have now simply converted them via Google. Greetz David

With the larger motors looks like you could use longer arms to more motion travel. Wonder if they can handle the torque and speed to get more motion? I'm sure there is a max travel. Probably limited by speed of the motors. Does yours provide enough travel or do you think more would be better?

Thanks for the comment and after driving it pretty hard for about two years, the two motors that move the upper frame have plenty of power and I don't think altering the levers is needed. They are 5 inch CTC. But If I wanted to drift a bit more, I would increase the Traction loss lever from 7 inches to maybe 10 and see if I get a little more sideways action.. They are fine at 7 - but there's always room to experiment!

Cool video Dave, I will check the rest of them out to see how you solved certain problems. Do you suggest any helpful forums for a build? Do you have any detailed schematics for your Arduino wiring? Can it interface with any racing/sim game or just a special game MADE for simtools software? Have you thought about getting the actual dash from a car you love? You can easily connect this up to an Arduino and use the CANBUS network to power and rev the gauges - it's what I'll do if I ever get close the finishing a build, but would look really cool for you to add. If you give it a search you'll find the libraries and guides of how to do it. Sorry about the question overload, I feel like this will be my next project :) I am also thinking about maybe a removable dash bit, where one could be a car and another a jet that you could just swap - as I love the flight sims to, how practical do you think this could be ? Perhaps 6dof needed for a jet setup?

@@DMAX_DIY thanks a lot Dave you've saved me a long search. Very cool stuff. Would you say VR is way better experience for the racing Sims? How about motion sickness? Is it lessened because you're actually moving because I've had some sickening times on some of those vr games! 😂 For the reasons above I am wary of the VR and you also are lacking peripheral without looking. What do you think about the feasiblity of a 180 degree curved projector panel that's attached to the frame and moves with it. There is a projector project like this on KZfaq but not incorporating any dof, seems an interesting challenge And finally, if you could do this build different what would you change about it if you were to do it again.
