Thanks for this content. Sadly where I am, in Italy, almost everything is made with rebar reinfirced concrete, which disgusts me, because it's something rotting from the birth. Thus these videos are an inspiration to build according to traditional brickwork techniques.

Thank you. I am about to have a 2 storey extension built by professionals, but I like to understand the process in detail. Ignore those whose grey matter is probably filled with concrete and don't understand that different ground quality requires different foundation specs.

The plans may say a depth but i recommend checking it against NHBC chapter 4.2 tables, as the last thing you want to do is have building control out to inspect and for them to say dig deeper due to a tree.. I inspect sites daily and that is the main thing that catches builders out.
@foundationgood123
@foundationgood123 Жыл бұрын
Yes I know, we generally get them cut down as the last thing I want is to do pile foundations lol. There are always checks before we start as that saves loads of trouble as you said.👍
@BerkleyBuilds
@BerkleyBuilds Жыл бұрын
@@foundationgood123 your solution of cutting them down is good but be aware that this could back fire. Always advise building control of when you cut the tree down, what type of tree and how far away it was. Soils, especially clay shrink and contract with moisture content which can lead to structural damage if not accounted for. If you don’t make building control aware then you could be liable for any repairs. Often a structural engineer can design a solution that doesn’t need piles.

I honestly can’t believe the depth and concrete you can get away were you are, that footing looks about 600 with about 200 worth of concrete I’m not saying it’s not adequate at all but what we have to do were I live is crazy 1.5 is pretty much normal sometimes 2 metres if trees are close. I’ve dug deeper footings than that for walls!!

Boxing Fisherman it depends on the ground, did you see how hard the ground was to dig! A meter depth is the norm however if the ground is poor the depth will have to go deeper until the ground is firm. A meter depth is below the frost line and the drought line!

@peterpeterson9903 5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps in the area you build in this is what the ground conditions require but I doubt that unless you only build within a very small geographical location. Who has told you this is what you need? The thickness of the concrete and the depth as which it should go are totally different things. The depth of formation level is important as you need to get down to soil that can easily bear the load of what is to built on top of it, then at that depth you can still use a say 200mm thick foundation if that is what will work, maybe you need 450mm it all depends and should be designed on a building by building approach. Too thick a foundation is just as bad as too small a foundation. Say you put a 600mm wide by 1000mm deep found next to an older house with 600mm by 200mm founds at a depth of 750mm - by pouring this foundation and with the effects of ground heave you could end up with a extension that stays put and the original house moves slightly - you end up with differential movement, cracking and damage - all because the found was too big! A project we are designing just now requires 600mm wide by 200mm deep found at a level of 800mm below ground level, this is perfect as a test pit has revealed this will see the builder down into stiff boulder clay which will have very little water change as it is on a hill with good water run-off. Then onto rebar - it depends on many factors, there is no such thing as a one found fits all buildings situation! Rebar is nor really required in a foundation if the bearing ground is confirmed as highly stable. Also, never assume building control officers actually have a clue about foundations - some do, some don't, also architects usually don't either - this is structural work.

No hardcore used under the concrete? Or did it not need any?.
@peterpeterson9903
@peterpeterson9903 5 жыл бұрын
You don't want to use any hardcore on foundations. You want the concrete to flow directly onto undisturbed ground at formation level. A found on hardcore is not as good as a found on undisturbed soil. Putting hardcore in relies on someone building it up in layers properly and compacting it. More often than not when hardcore is used incorrectly I see differential settlement where some of it was well compacted and some not - this can be so bad walls will crack and pull away from existing buildings etc. Different story for concrete slab pours where you have a large raft of concrete being poured over a larger area, you want it to sit and "float" on the surface, if the ground is good undisturbed sub-soil that will not have big fluctuations of water content etc. then you don't even need hardcore for a slab. This is why engineers should be involved, and often you should not let a builder just choose for you because often they don't actually fully understand it and go for a 1 size fits all when in fact you can often save time and money and end up with a better finished build if you follow the conditions.

Wow... no reinforcing. That's all gonna break apart over the next few years. Look for the cracks in the wall. Concrete always needs reinforcing in a footing.

No it wont. Plenty of old houses build on less footings with no reinforcement. We tend to over engineer buildings now.

Trench is standard 1 metre below ground level but More if ground is a problem, sometimes less if you hit solid ragstone or hard chalk, All down to building inspector. Conrete can be 250 mm thick but more people like myself mass pour the trench to save the poor brickie.

To be honest, there's very few builders taking on new work where I live, and those that do charge a heavy premium to other parts of the country. Some folk have little choice but to have a go themselves.
