Thank you! This video really helped me. I purchased the same helmet, ear muffs, and a sena 20 evo. Knew I'd have to do some work to make it nice, and your tutorial helped a lot.

For those who want to use the exact same parts, the hardware (screw posts, 1/4" aluminum spacers, contact glue, etc) was from Ace Hardware (popular hardware store in the U.S.). FYI: I tried Lowes hardware first, and they do not have the screw posts nor the aluminum spacers -- so skip Lowes if you want to follow this 100%.

And if you thought you might get these parts at Home Depot, let me tell you that that's a bust too. So head to the red hardware store if you don't want to waste time.

I think I watched this 100xs while making mine. Thank you. I did alter a couple of things: 1- The gentle dremel works much better than the agressive hole saw, and 2- Using stainless bolt plus lock-nut is much more robust than the aluminum bolt/nut, doesn't come lose (still used the alum spacer). I also used blue masking tape instead of hot glue (adjustable). That's small potatoes thoe for this great how-to vid.

Hey Water Trail. Which size stainless bolt and locknuts did u use. I’m building now. Finding the screw posts is a hell 😞. Really appreciate your help.

Great video! Fantastic details of construction. Purchased the helmet yesterday, buying the screw posts and spacers today, other parts are on order from amazon now. Will be putting my helmet together in just a few days just as shown in your video. Can’t think you enough!! My only change will be that later, I will be replacing the outer shell with one I will make out of carbon fiber. I plan to film an instructional video for the carbon fiber shell to further add to your outstanding tutorial. Again... THANK YOU!! Is it ok if I mention your video in mine?

Thank you! You can certainly mention this video in yours. Looking forward to seeing your carbon fiber project! I cheated by wrapped mine in carbon fiber vinyl ;-) Not sure if you're going for function or just style, if you just want the look of carbon fiber, I highly recommend a vinyl wrap. I used this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L9J4JRG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Have you ever heard of Tufftalk from Sena ? Maybe it can be your ver. 2.0
@justinboyce1067
@justinboyce1067 6 жыл бұрын
TerraBiker, yes I have, but the tufftalk is $400 by itself and only offers 25DB sound attenuation and cannot be transferred between helmets like my SENA SMH10 can. I found this to be a more cost conscious and effective solution than the tufftalk, but if you're looking for a pre-built solution, it's about the only one on the market.

How necessary is it to cut out the sides for the ear cups? I have a large head, and the large size Giro helmet fits me well But I feel like even with the helmet held down firmly against my head, it leaves enough room for me to hold the ear cups securely over my ears already.
@justinboyce1067
@justinboyce1067 5 жыл бұрын
Harmless Toast, for most people, it is necessary, but it is entirely possible that some people may be able to use muffs without needing to modify the ear pockets. Definitely do a test fit first to see if there is enough room before making any cuts. Good luck!

Rings don’t come apart on Peltor 3M. Trick? Certain model number?

Brad Brown check the parts list in the comments. I used a large screw driver through the middle and under one side to pry them loose. They are in there pretty tight, but all of the 3M muffs I have seen come apart the same.

Is this helmet en966 rated..... Don't think so and then to drill holes in it, anybody who does a DIY job on a helmet and/or attachs a helmet cam and all the extras Is asking for trouble. Spend the money get something en966 air certified
@justinboyce1067
@justinboyce1067 5 жыл бұрын
Brendan Crawley, everyone can appreciate your concern for safety, and if it makes you uncomfortable, I would recommend you buy a factory made solution. I encourage you to research what tests a helmet must pass to receive an EN966 rating. Truthfully, the Giro helmet would probably exceed the EN966 requirements if it were tested in Europe where that standard applies and the company desired to market the helmet for such use. End of the day you are the one who has to wear it, so get something that you are comfortable with and has been tested to meet the requirements you require. Best of luck on your search for the right helmet. Blue skies!

maybe using a tactical protec for comtacs is a shorter and cheaper way to achieve what you are looking for here, I dont really understand why would you void the warranty on you 200 dollar helmet if youcan buy the same thing but already prepared from the factory and with the warranty that it will protect your head because the structure has not been messed up with many holes. I really think this kind of videos are doing more like a bad service to the comunity encouraging people to do unsafe things.
@justinboyce1067
@justinboyce1067 6 жыл бұрын
Alejandro Ayora because the helmet itself only costs $30, not $200, and I don’t need a warranty because that only helps if there is a manufacturer defect in the first place. I looked into the PT-A Bravo option you are referring to and chose this instead because that helmet does not have a safety rating of any kind, whereas this one does. If you prefer that option then that’s what you should buy. Ultimately, if your primary concern is head protection, you should not be using anything other than a DOT rated helmet. Most people only wear a helmet when they fly, as a means to hold their ear protection and comms in place while having SOME protection against minor bumps and impacts. I recommend everyone decide what they want from their helmet and buy one that suits that need. This solution is not for everyone, but may be in alignment with what many are looking for.

All helmet manufacturer gives warnings, that even the glue of a sticker or painting will weaken the hull of the helmet...and you are cutting out a big peace and drilling a holes in it like a swiss cheese...and you still think it will protect you like it suppoused to? Do you know how helmet like this are beeing tested bevore they get the certificate EN 966? Seems like your life is not worth much. I am allways a fan of DIY...but here , we are talking about your last safety. ...i needed my helmet already and happy that nothing happened. My life is much more worth than saving a couple of hundred dollars! ...if you buy a whole PPG Equipment and maybe spend some extra money to have more power or some extra features...and at the end ...the main part is the weakest...no, no , no...don't understand that. Always happy landings to all paragliders!

These aren't built for protection. They're built to hold comms and earmuffs.
@MRTNBLND77

Yeah...Ok...i understand...that makes sense...You die, cause of not wearing a protection helmet...Com's (and noise reduction) is more important...heros are flying and cannot get hurth.
@iamtheav8r
@iamtheav8r 6 жыл бұрын
uhhh...no. If you fall out of the sky, a helmet isn't going to help you much. Try thinking logically and with some common sense.
@MRTNBLND77
@MRTNBLND77 6 жыл бұрын
@iamtheheav8r I am thinking logically, cause i am a licensed pilot (how about you?)...and i do not want to contend with you. But some people what this modification and do not think (like you) about the consequences. I agree, that if you fall out of the sky, it will not help you/anybody...but all depends on the hight and impact (in joule) on your head. And i know what i am talking abaout, cause i had a 70% collapse of my glider and was only 100M high (approx 300feet) and survived...and glad, that i had a helmet on, cause i was going down in a forest with little trees! I survived, cause i know what to do, when things like that happens (i am flying a C-category glider) Most accidents happens while take off and landing or at low levels 10-20m (approx 30-60ft) ...and thats the point, where helmet CAN help you a lot...at least minimize the risk of hard head injuries. and i saw lot of PPG Videos which pilots are doing low level flights..where your helmet is relevant in case of something unexpected happens! No really good and approved PPG/Paragliding school will tell you, that you can modify your helmet (in that case, you loose the certificate for it) ...or fly without helmet...cause it makes no sense. With your argumentation, we could all take out our Airbags from the car, cause in high speed, accidents the Airbag will not help you at all ;-) (right?) Thats why Skateboard, Snowboard/Ski, Bike-helmets have different test and certifcates...they gets testet, what they are intended for! What does your insurance say, when you used a modified helmet in case of a big accident...do they not check /proof your equipment? Not loosing insurance? Where i live, you will loose insurance...if they find out! (Sorry for wrong spelling/writing...i am not native english) So please, don't say, that this is harmless, if you drill holes in a helmet or use any stuff that tackle the hard shell
@PPGDV
@PPGDV Жыл бұрын
Then do you wear a neck brace while flying as well? I do not know of a single helmet wearer wearing one for protection. And a $30 helmet isn’t providing anything adequate for flight anyways. Taking a collapse and getting scratched up by trees is not the same as taking one and slamming the ground.
