Part 2 (Assembly): • How to Build a Pergola...
This is a step-by-step video on the pre-assembly of a pergola I made for a client. It is made out of cedar and I used all stainless steel hardware to put it together.
I had to break up the "prep" and build into two different videos, so the build part will be coming soon!

Solid work my man. Well done. Prep is 90% of the install. Whenever I build something my wife ask why this or that takes so long. Prep, prep, prep. That's one part you don't want to take short cuts on. Excellent video 👍.

Thank you for the good effort. I liked how you cut the slots for the braces with your saw, i have noticed that you have a router and was wondering if that would not speed up the process?

Can I just have you guys come build mine?!! Seriously, thank you for these videos! Due to quotes coming in (I could buy a Tesla with the money quoted), we are going to have to build our own pergolas. We will need to build about 3 of these on our property and these videos are very helpful! Do you have any suggestions for large pergolas? Our biggest one is 20x20. We have strong winds where we are. What is the best kind of wood and where should we look for the wood for our pergolas?

Hi Crystal. Thanks for the positive feedback! If you are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (Texas), I can definitely build them but I am booked until the beginning of 2018. I can research a little bit about the 20x20 pergola and get back to you. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at: triplerwoodworks(at)gmail.com

Hey awesome video! At 3:12 what kind of bit is that in the router? It has a bearing and can adjust the depth of cutting? I want one if you can give me a link
@homeautodiy6763
@homeautodiy6763 6 жыл бұрын
It’s actually just a straight bit and a guide bushing. The guide bushing followed the template that I made and I had to adjust the cut depth because that would have been quite a bit of material to go through in one pass. I don’t believe a set of guide bushings are very expensive at most woodworking stores. I haven’t checked, but you might be able to get them at Lowe’s or Home Depot. I would check online first before you make a trip there.
@JDT738126
@JDT738126 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Rogers ok, so I will just look for a guide bushing for a router. I did notice that you made a few passes but I still feel it would be more precise than a freehand tool
@RRRWoodworks
@RRRWoodworks 6 жыл бұрын
That previous comment was me as well, I forgot that I was logged into KZfaq on my other account. I agree, it’s WAY more precise than freehand. If you have a good jigsaw and you use it well so that the blade doesn’t bend as you turn, that works well also and takes less time than the router.

I’m almost positive I used Olympic Maximum - Cedar Naturaltone from Lowe’s. I used 3 gallons and had a little bit of the 3rd gallon to spare on that 10x12 pergola. Link: m.lowes.com/pd/Olympic-MAXIMUM-Pre-Tinted-Cedar-Naturaltone-Transparent-Exterior-Stain-Actual-Net-Contents-128-fl-oz/3032639 If you haven’t assembled/installed your pergola yet, I HIGHLY suggest staining all of the pieces beforehand. For the first pergola I built on my patio, I stained after assembly and it was a huge PITA. Just a word of caution...
@jrenaud22
@jrenaud22 6 жыл бұрын
RRR Woodworks Thank you! After watching your video, I definitely planned on staining first. What a great idea. I have the cedar sitting in my garage drying. I bought a moisture meter from Lowe's and some of the wood is around 20%. I've read that it should be
@RRRWoodworks
@RRRWoodworks 6 жыл бұрын
jrenaud22 Yes, that info sounds correct. Stain works by absorbing into the wood and if the wood is already saturated with water, the stain will be unable to penetrate. I haven’t had experience with testing stain at different moisture contents yet, but the lower the moisture, the better.

How did you attach the wood to your saw for cutting the post notches? My saw has no holes in the base plate to do that.
@RRRWoodworks
@RRRWoodworks 7 жыл бұрын
+Louie Carter Hi Louie. If the base plate of your circular saw doesn't have holes, I don't see why you can't drill a couple in it. I would just be sure to unplug the saw first, and use a metal file to smooth out the metal tear out so you don't damage your work piece. Also if you do drill holes, be sure that they are accessible with a screw driver from the top.
@Louie359
@Louie359 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I made one, but I did not realize the size I needed to make it. For others, be sure that it will always be bigger than the size notch you are making so that one side of the base does not tip into it once you start breaking out the small pieces you cut. I made this mistake and had to use my chisel for all the breakout of the small pieces as the one side of my saw was difficult to keep steady..........if the base I made had been wider, that would not have happened.

@RRR Woodworks, thanks for the link. For that 45 degree cut, did you start the cut at 1.5 ft down from the top of the 6x6? Also, how long did you make the support beams? Your videos are extremely useful. Thank you.
@RRRWoodworks
@RRRWoodworks 6 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the look/proportion you are going for. It also depends on the total height of your pergola. If the pergola height is 8 feet at the top, that would make the bottom of the 2x12 beams at roughly 6.5 feet. If you go a good amount lower than that, a few people may be banging their heads on the support brace. I would have to dig up my old notes and see how much lower the brace came below the 2x12 but I’m not sure if I could find them. Just be sure you add about 4” of height to that brace so you have it overlap with the bottom of the beams. The rest of the brace measurements are personal preference.
