I've been a subscriber and like your work so I'm not new to your videos. But I SWEAR just today I was telling my wife that I want to build a picnic table for the back. I said it out loud and that was it, didn't think about it again. Then I log onto my KZfaq account and there you are building one!! With free plans to a great table. I've already downloaded the plans and thank you for everything you do. The plans definitely took some time to make and are easy to understand for those interested.

Hi April, love the videos. You're very determined, innovative and patient. As you're cutting the tabletop, in this particular setup, the right hand piece is the shorter, most likely scrap piece. The piece on the left will vary by as much as 3/8", particularly treated lumber. About the only pieces cut to exact length at the lumber yard or home store are pre cut white wood studs. Took me a while to realize that a long time ago when I was first starting out. I admire your ingenuity in dealing without a shop. Now you're working like a site carpenter. Looking forward to the next video too!

I used the plans from the site. It looks great, I recommend making the table legs taller and likewise the benches too. Maybe 4" carriage bolt instead of 4 1/2" as well. It cost more in materials than prefab at box store but, its better. After a couple days of use: definitely make table legs taller, set bench legs in further to tuck tighter to table. Great game able, kids love it!

I think 3 1/2" carriage bolts would work. Additionally, some 3" screws for the cleats would be nice.

Good project! One advantage of the detached bench seats is that you can move them away and use the table as a buffet. Thanks for showing this build.

Unattached benches also make the table and benches more versatile for use in other projects. Mine stay in the shop for the winter months for sanding, staining drying.... I even use my benches to lift my push mower and other small equipment for oil changes. If they get in my way, they are design to be outdoors so that is where they go until I have room or need them again.

As an old fart that felt I'd missed my calling entirely, it is refreshing to see you successful and persevering in your youth. You've got real imagination April. I'm glad you made a simple picnic table to help guide us folks that aren't carpenters. I'm gonna build one like it, knowing that it will last the rest of my days. Thanks for uploading .. and I wish you'd show me how to make some oars for a rowboat (without a lathe). God bless

Great to see the safety glasses April. My cousin is blind in one eye because he ripped a board that still had the bar code tag stapled to the end of the board. He was lucky. It could have killed him if it had gone deeper. Just a cautionary to all, takes a few seconds to pull those tags off of your boards and also to do a quick scan for stray staples or tacks on your lumber before it hits the blade.

I just built traditional picnic table and the wood I used is pressure treated lumber from home depot and it has a red look like cedar which dressed it up nice. For less weight, you can use 5/4" decking boards for top and seats.

I built custom tables for a friend. Almost your design , but the tables were 6" long and the tops were 3/4 inch poplar.(reducing the weight because they were an older couple making them easy to move around} these tables matched for a 12" table. they were kept under cover and are now about 10 years old and holding up well. Nice job for a tailgate party.

Hi April, That's a fine looking picnic table. Working from the truck at least lets you still complete your projects. Like you said, will be a few months before you get to work on your shop. Nice you being able to wear shorts. It's 38°F here near Philly with a Nor-easter coming to dump heavy wet snow Monday night through Tuesday. They guestimate 8 - 12". Doesn't matter how much, I don't like shoveling snow anymore. :-( However, I have to install a new starter in my sister's Grand Cherokee today if I want to be able to move it to get the driveway cleared of snow. I will be working outside. No garage here. :-( Take care and looking forward to next video.

April I always look forward to your videos, and as a builder that has to work off the tail gate of a truck time to time, I can only offer one suggestion. When you 45 cut the top boards next time cut it on the backside of the board. With an inside cut the blade can kick your cut off and I would hate to see that trucks rear window knocked out. Speaking from experience.

I made the picnic table using 2x8's and it is a BEHEMOTH....I made it 7 ft long!!!! Now, my friends all want one!!! So I made one using 2x6's yesterday and one bench...and went to Lowes to buy the 48 carriage bolts?? Geez louise...are those necessary?? I put them in my big boy but the cost (even on Amazon) is like $2/ bolt/washer/nut. If we don't move the table are they necessary?? I have put the holes for the bolts in now and it's stable as heck. I pay $5.37/each for the 11 2x6's= $59.07 + 2x4's x 6 = $4.98 = $29.88 so in wood alone I have $95 (inc. tax). The carriage bolts adds over HALF the cost..I am leaving the one I built in my front yard and it will NEVER MOVE...any suggestions on maybe putting a wooden dowel in those holes or am I being cheap/kwazy/insane/?? love your videos...thanks.

Just wondered if you've ever thought about building a garden swing, or even better, a swing set? I just did both and I've gotta tell you it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be! I do think one or both would be a good project for you and your channel, because you can make either as big or small as you like. They make great heirlooms and incorporate some of the skills you just demonstrated in your picnic table project. Keep up the good work. We're rooting for you!
