How to build a plywood boat: Part 2 - Hydrofoil - getting the boat to fly!

This homemade plywood hydrofoil flies, with only a 3.3hp motor. The boat is 3m (10ft) long, made from plywood and gets up out of the water and flies at about 120 mm above the surface of the water.
No need for exotic materials or a big motor, get flying with little money. A little tongue in cheek, but this playful experiment worked.

Great build! You know, in high school my shop teacher taught us something: "Form Follows Function". Had to think about that and I came up with my brain's translation: style takes a back seat to performance! The fact that your hydrofoils ain't pretty - that can be fixed later! IT WORKS !!! Be jumbl pproud of that!!! NOICE BUILD!!?!

Nice job Tim! We've done a couple dinghy (motored and sailing) with foils but never had the patience to document beyond a couple pics. FYI - if you're looking for a quicker build of the foils search for foam airfoils made for RC aircraft. You get an exact foil out of foam that's easy to coat with glass or carbon fiber...

Hi Nick. Thanks for your comment and tips. Good idea, I will have a look at that, in fact, I remember seeing hot wire being used to carve out aerofoils in foam before. All the best to you. Tim

masts may be the way to go to reduce drag for the vertical supports. Great build all the same as it stands. Thanks for documenting it for us Cheers Frankie

Hi Tim Very interesting project and more power to you for evolving the design continuously. You could check out Clearwater Hydrofoils. He has a parts kit for $139 usd that you just have to glass up that includes front and rear wings fuselage and a mast. He will sell you the individual parts too I believe. A mast may be the wa

Loved the video Tim, and your idea for the rails that make trying various configuration easy. I wonder if a big reason you don't get more speed is that the propeller was designed to push a non-foiling boat. You need one with a larger (steeper) pitch... assuming the foiling drag would be equal to a displacement hull drag at a larger forward velocity, you would need a different pitch to produce the same thrust at the max RPM. I hope you are still working on similar projects!
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pejoka, yes I know what you are saying. I thought the same but it was still under the same sort of load, I don't think it had run out of rpm. I think the main reason I didn't get more speed is the plywood struts created too much drag. and also the foils weren't super smooth. With airfoil struts and all sprayed in a Urethane I would have seen better speeds. Then maybe would be the time to try a coarser pitch.. I ran out of time testing and had to stop.. :(

I know nothing of hydrofoils, but the aerospace engineer in me wonders if your airfoil is not a bit too thick considering the density of water vs. air. A thicker airfoil will get you lift at a lower speed, but at the penalty of more drag once you get to a certain speed. Also, your wings are very long - if you compare to something like the Quadrofoil, it only has a tiny lifting surface for a similar weight and power. But then again, it's not like you were hopping out of the water, so my guess is that it was the airfoil shape limiting your speed, rather than the wing length or properllor pitch. Really cool project, and good food for thought - thanks for sharing!

Thanks Philip appreciate your input. Yes, you could be right, I went big on area as I was only a low speed boat but a thinner section would also be worth trying. Also the struts made a lot spray so they were adding a lot of drag. I'd like to play more with it.

What about like a sailboat using a raised center section that can be raised or lowered tucked up tight when not used?

Speaking of flying... I have two aircraft on the drawing board as we speak... One single seat and the other two seat powered by a VW type 1 motor and a reduction drive so I have a fair sized prop. They are designed for off airport use.

As a long time boater, I can see one major problem with hydrofoils. Running aground can be dangerous. Years ago a commercial passenger hydrofoil clipped the channel in St. Thomas killing several passengers and causing injuries to the rest.

I used to be in prototyping at a composites shop. Planning on making a trolling motor powered fishing kayak with removable foils. I think I can get her in the air with 6 mph (30 pound thrust)...or hoping to.... the goal is to break the 6 MPH mark once lifted.
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 8 жыл бұрын
That sounds interesting. I like electric drives.. I think if you have enough foil area you will get foil borne even with that amount of thrust. Let me know how you get on. It will be good to see what you come up with.

you said it didn't go much faster, but i'm curious if it was more fuel efficient ....or was there still just too much drag?
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim. Yes, there was still too much drag. I am presuming it was the plywood struts. It's possible the size of the foils also could have been a bit big too. And they weren't polished to a super finish. The ride though, was a big improvement.

@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave. Sorry, I don't remember the angle I used and don't have the drawings with me. It was an estimate, you could try something approximately similar to this. Or two separate foils, further apart for better stability. The V was certainly better that a straight foil, but further apart or wider would be better. Let me know how you go, I would be interested to hear what you come up with.

what is the speed difference in comparison with the first non-flying variant?
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ruslan. There wasn't much difference in speed. The big difference was the ride, much smoother. I think the foil sections were too large and the uprights weren't slipstreamed enough.
