How To Build A Polycarbonate Greenhouse, How To Make A Greenhouse, Home D.I.Y
As a keen gardener, grower and horticulturalists I have wanted, and needed, my own greenhouse for a long time. Certainly, with all the plants that fill my dining room in spring time, before plants can safely be put outside, a greenhouse has become a bit of a priority.
Having finished the patio I felt that it was time to build my own greenhouse, one that would be large enough to be practical but of proportions that would fit into the space available.
This video shows how I built the greenhouse using 2x2 inch (5cm) timber and sheets of polycarbonate.
Tools required:
Router,
Saw,
Electric jigsaw,
Drill,
Screwdrivers,
Hammer,
Rawlbolts or similar,
Appropriate sized screws suitable for wood,
Silicone and application gun,
Damp proof membrane,
Appropriate drill bits,
Set square,
Tape measure,
Pencil,
Marker pen,
Spirit level,
Appropriate sized wood,
Polycarbonate sheets,
Vapour tape for polycarbonate

Never thought there could be a DIY of greenhouses! I am redesigning my garden and I am also a novice to gardening so I am always open for advises, tips and experiences. My sister has an amazingg garden and I got inspired by her. Her glass greenhouse purchase form Mulberry greenhouses is the cherry on top to that beautiful backyard garden. I am also planning to get one but need to learn a few things first. :)

A greenhouse makes a massive difference to how you can garden, certainly in terms of being able to start seedlings earlier and also to overwinter more plants. Enjoy

@@Ian-gw2vx Hi and thanks for the message. As I was buying a quantity it worked out cheaper to buy from roofing megastore. Otherwise you can buy polycarbonate from B and q, Wickes and Homebase. Make sure to get twinwall for better strength and thermal properties.

@@Ian-gw2vx unfortunately polycarbonate has gone up loads in the last few years. Some garden centres sell small panels but it’s of thin grade.

Looking to do this on my brick home, any issues with the exposed brick in the greenhouse as far as mold, condensation etc?

Hi. Thanks for the message and watching. So long as the bricks are in a good condition and the mortar is of sound quality then you will be okay. I used dampproof membrane barrier between the timber frame and the adjoining brickwork to prevent constant contact from the timber onto the brick but that was more a precaution. If you have adequate ventilation into the greenhouse then you shouldn’t ever have high humidity to cause mould or much condensation. Hope this all helps. Enjoy your build 🪴🪚

Thanks. I only ran silicone along the timbers that adjoin the house, no need elsewhere as the polycarbonate is a snug fit.

what about drainage to let condensation escape at bottom,the wood will rot ?

It’s all treated timber and the whole structure sits on paving, that has a slight fall, to allow for drainage. The moisture and excess water drains out through odd gaps to the base.

One last question what width was router bit 10 m same as sheet?

Ask as many questions as you like. Yes, the router bit was 10mm as I wanted it to be a tight fit. Enjoy your build.

Nice build . Are the polycarbonate panels free floating in the frame ? .

Hi Robert. Thanks for watching. Yes the panels are loose in the frame, albeit a tight fit. The tape to the ends of the panels adds a little extra bulk to form a good seal too. Are you going to do a build too? If so then enjoy it once finished for growing loads of extra plants in.

Future build , yes. Old greenhouse , too small , so going for a large wooden structure .Looked at poly tunnels , expensive , and wrong dimensions.. lets see where it goes ..

@@robertstenton6763👍 Before building mine I looked up Polytunnels but as you say just too expensive for what they are and the quality is so varied. At least with building your own you can adapt size and design to fit your needs. Normally height of doorway’s is the main issue😂 Happy building and growing

I've only just come across your videos, as I'm looking to do exactly as you have done, but smaller, for our cottage garden. Mine will only be 1500 x 800, and 1700 high to fit under the eaves of a brick built shed. Have you any tips, or things that you might have done differently with yours? Thanks.

Hi Simon. Glad you found my channel and thanks for watching. Given that you are only intending to have a narrow greenhouse/lean to how about building it more like the coldframe that made in a different video. The coldframe that I made had 2 front opening doors. By having front opening doors you could then create deeper internal shelving without having to worry about how much space to leave as a path. Since the original build I have added an additional shelf, giving 4. Just a suggestion. Enjoy your build and if you need more help just shout. @@diyhomeandgardening thanks so much for responding. I'll look that video out, and have a think about what I want to do. It had crossed my mind to have front opening doors, as because of the limited depth, I was wondering about an end door. The only issue is to maintain a fall back to front, given that the back can only be 1700, the doors would need to be lower, and might prove to be a pain, ducking to get in....Be in touch!

@@simon3030able No problem Simon. Over the width you are talking about you will only need a height difference of about 3cm to give you a suitable fall for quick run off of rain. My suggestion is to get some paper, pen and ruler and do a few sketches of design and then draw to scale. Better to work out dimensions before you start to buy and cut wood. Enjoy the project 🛠️🪴

@diyhomeandgardening yep, I'm a paper and pencil kind of chap, used to design commercial kitchens and AC installations, so measuring is king! Thanks for the info re fall, I was wondering. I was going to fix the polycarbonate sheets to the outside of the timber, rather than router a channel like you. Any thoughts?

@@simon3030able Much easier to fix the polycarbonate to the outside of the wooden frame but you need to make sure to use the correct screws and caps to hold it down. If you don’t and wind gets underneath then normal screws will pull through. Have fun planning 👍🛠️

Hi. Many thanks for watching and your message. I loved building my greenhouse as I got to have the right size and style to fit the location. Only problem now is that I have filled it with loads of seedlings😃 I haven’t properly costed the build before but I would say it cost a maximum of £459-500. I’ll have to do a proper check though. @DIY Home and Gardening that's great! As an off the shelf greenhouse can cost £500 upwards. In my last house (a small terraced in Lancashire) i completely covered my backyard, making it a yard greenhouse. Altogether cost me about £900. I used the clear corrugated panels. My new house has an east facing gable end. I'm thinking more of storage room but with greenhouse capabilities.

@@cletus1875 I originally thought of just using the corrugated roofing as I had used it for a lean to build and thought it’s pretty good. I instead opted for the 10mm twin wall Polycarbonate as the uv light penetration is better and it also has better thermal properties for winter protection. I bought the polycarbonate from roofing megastore as they were the cheapest for the amount I wanted and they have a good range of sizes available. Reviews all seemed good too. Have a good day 🌻

Are they 4x4 ?,and what's at bottom of the sheets in the frame?

The posts are 2x2inches. I built timber frame around the whole of the panels, all shown in the video.

@@philhode5104. The sheets were 6m long I think and 670mm wide. They came from Roofing megastore and I cut them down to size, and then taped the ends.
