A few people were wondering how I built my potting bench. Fortunately I took video of it.
I will show you how I made my own potting bench or table.
It's made from 2x4's and 1x6 cedar fencing. Super easy to build

I haven't done anything like this in my life, but I've sawed a few boards and built a fence once. After watching this video, and after my wife begged me for one, I told her, "Hunny, I'll just make one for you!" So off to Home Depot I went (after watching this video no fewer than 16 times, and wrote down every step...like a recipe (I AM a pretty good cook!). Anyway, I cut all of the lumber Thursday, and built the thing today, and it came out perfect! The only difference I made was to the upper shelf. I made it out of three 2 x4s and 2 x 2s. I used 2 x 2 instead of ripping the 2 x4s because all I have is a 5-1/2 inch cordless saw. Wish I could add a photo of it here! Thank you, sir, for giving me the instructions and the inspiration to make this! Very gratifying!

They have these cute little circular saws now that make it a lot easier than the old arm-strong Amish saw cutting. They have protection on all sides of the blade so it's a lot safer than what they used to be like.

I put a 16” galvanized pan on the right side , sunken to just a inch above . A real gardener needs a bucket of dirt AT the same level as the top deck! Otherwise you have to raise your arm , it flows better ! One of the better videos!

I was impressed by your choice of materials, the step by step plan, and what a nice potting bench at the finish. I want to thank you for your detailed and easy to follow video instructions. I am an average handy woman, age 62, who used your video as basis for a potting bench for another female friend. She helped. We did it one day. Our dimensions were slightly different and we did our shelf on top a little different and we didn't use fence boards, but overall it came out very good. We used exterior plywood on top and deck boards for shelving. I made step by step instructions ahead of time, then rechecked them with the video. It all went like clockwork. Including going get the supplies, the overall project took about 8 hours. Thank you, Kathy.

I like the top of a bench with less space (if any) between the top surface boards. You can lose a lot of soil (or seed packets...) between the gaps plus make a mess over things stored below. Looks very professional - hope you are enjoying now that wicked winter is finally over. Thanks for the inspiration and work making this video.

Thank you so much for this post. I am a gardener - not a builder and have never built anything like this. All of the benches for sale out there were so wimpy and expensive. I really wanted a decent sized bench that could live outside all year. It was super easy and turned out beautifully. I even made a couple modifications. I made my shelves only 24 inches high total (12 inches each) and a made a soil resivoir in the top. IT is awesome. THANK YOU!

That's a beautiful piece of garden furniture. Well done. The only ones I can find to buy are flimsy and expensive. I wouldn't be able to do the top because my tunnel curves in too much but the braces you used to make the table, I will copy

thank you for sharing it. I will add a water sink and other side dirt box " open and closed" top door and the side for water hoses and top for tools hanging like yours. I will make a bigger potty bench for my older sister s birthday in next Sept. She has a green thumb better than me lol :-D

Nice work - beefy with lots of room. I build potting benches as part of my woodworking business and this one is much bigger & heftier than the ones I build simply because it is for 'urban/suburban' gardeners. I sure would like to build a few like this one, but I get the feeling you're a serious gardener, and it looks like to have a good amount of property to garden (notice I used it as a verb... ;-) ) Take care & thanks for sharing your excellent potting bench!!

I want to make one of these only a whole lot smaller to clamp my grain mill onto and make bread on the the table top. I'd use one large sheet of wood for the table top so that flour doesn't fall down between the slats and I can maybe wash it off. All my ingredients in mason jars would go on those shelves. Very nice design and easy to do.

Wow, great video. I may even try this myself. The only tool I dont have is the big table saw that cut the 2 x 4s in half. Any other way I can cut them ? Have jigsaw and circular saw. Thanks for such clear instructions and measurements.

Excellent tutorial on your potting bench , I got me a new project for tomorrow. Here's a returned thank you. I see that you have metal saw horses in the back . Use a scrap 2 x 4 cut it to the same length of the top of your sawhorse. Bolt it on. Using a 2x2 screwed on the center of the 2x4 with a 2 inch overhang on each side for a wider work area. 2x2's are easier to replace then a sawhorse or your saw blades ,plus it helps with some minor clamping projects.

This is not really easy for us who do not use a lot of cutting tools very well. It takes a lot of cuts and a lot of hardware. But it is very nice and well built. Well narrated and video’d.

Is it possible to list what i need to make this 28in wide instead of 42? I have a small space. Thx

Hi maria.. this video shows 60" wide where these heavy 2x4 boards makes perfect sense. However, if you go from this 60" design down to 28".. the 2x4 frame is more of a hindrance than an asset. I'm not saying is can't be done, but perhaps a less bulky design would suit your space better. 28 wide x 36 deep x height you need to consider a 2x4 board is 8' (or 10') feet long if you buy 8 foot 2x4's that's 96 inches each, each piece you cut off makes that 96" board a bit shorter. Use that logic to make any size you like, and calculate the number of boards. My wife insisted in 31" waist high table top so she can bear down on stuff easier, and 38" deep for more working room. She needed 72" width

I like the fact that your beams rest on piers, so kudos for that. But i didn't see you add anything to support the decking in the middle of the table. I know that decking will sag ,with the load that a few medium or one large pot filled with dirt will provide. The build needs at least one joist to displace the load over that span.

I did. About the 2:25 mark you will see I put bracing across the top to prevent the top boards from sagging

@@Growyourheirlooms Good. I somehow didnt see that when I scrolled back through the video. Did you end up sealing the table and placing the legs on blocks above grade so the endgrain doesnt absorb water?

@@honestman3387 I did set them on small blocks to elevate them. I did not seal the wood. The bench is under my madrone tree. 2 years on and so far looks as good as new

What would you change if you have a miter saw but no table saw for rip cuts?

Just buy the 2x2's instead of making them from 2x4's. That's the only reason to rip them.

Love the video and will make this for my wife. BUT when sanding or cutting pressure treated lumber you must wear a mask. The stuff is toxic.

I know. It's sad that 2x4's went up to $8 each at one time. They are starting to come down now
