Tip for welding aluminum. Always clean surfaces with acetone before welding, even if it looks clean. Wipe your feed rods with acetone as well. It's a good idea to also use a wire brush or green scotchbrite pad where you plan to weld just to make sure surface residue is gone. For areas that will be welded don't mix materials with abrasives, meaning abrasives used on aluminum should only be used with aluminum. Taper the amps at the end of the weld to prevent suck-back (can be source of cracks). Turn up your post flow time to at least 5 seconds, I usually use 7 seconds minimum at 17-25 cfh. I like using the foot pedal with aluminum because there's a small temp difference between a good consistent weld and having it blow out. Every time you dip the rod it sucks heat out of the weld and can cause it to re-solidify so I usually manually pulse to keep it in the sweet spot. But overall starting out on the thicker material is definitely easier and will help get the basics down with minimal issues.

aluminum welder here. good tips, but I never do these things. too many parts, too little time.. if a weld comes out looking like crap, go back over it and manually pulse the foot pedal. perfect every time!

Always so impressed with your skill set. For that being your first aluminum welding project, you sure picked a challenging one. That said, you are doing great as you always do! Always use lots of sealant on all mated surfaces and on any screws sunk, a dab in the hole before you screw it in. Of course you know this so I apologize for my two cents of advice🤗 What a cool project👏

When grinding aluminium with abrasive tools a little bit of candle wax helps a lot to prevent it from clogging up and start smearing the aluminium instead of cutting it. Just dab it onto the tool once in a while. When hack sawing the blades might tend to stick and jump so a little cutting fluid, ethanol or WD40 helps and same goes for rotary filing and any blade cutting.
@SkypowerwithKarl
@SkypowerwithKarl 2 жыл бұрын
Just be really sure you get all the wax off that’s burnished, entrapped or impregnated into the aluminum before you try to weld it.

Just ran across your channel and love the build and I’m not trying to be one of those people but the force of water going thru that pump I’m afraid will blow those wood screw out pretty quickly, I would also glass the plywood box in a little more on the inside and secure the alum. plate on the bottom. Don’t underestimate the power of water. Again I like the build

First just wanted to say, this is absolutely incredible! Secondly, i work a lot with water jets and I definitely recommend you adding a gasket to the connection point between the impeller and the drive nozzle, as any leaks here when you start adding series power will be a massive pain.

(Sharing my expertise since you share yours) The camera settings on the Timelapse isn’t really the source of the problem what I think you’re seeing is banding from the LED lights. You can fix it by using a slower shutter speed or matching it to the hz of the lights. Filming weddings I have to deal with that all the time and it’s annoying lol Slowing the shutter speed on a Timelapse will actually give beneficial results too as you can start to introduce some natural motion blur. Love the content dude! Keep up the good work

Really cool build man! I need to start doing videos like this. Got a ton of equipment but became disabled, might be able to slowly build cool stuff though when the body allows.. anyway I'm glad the younger generation is getting into the makersphere... so many people don't know how to build ANYTHING, cant even assemble an IKEA furniture, seems like actual crafting is becoming a dying art. Keep the art alive man, youre doing great! By the way, amazon has 2 burner forges for under 200 bucks... if youre interested in expanding your shop and skills. I got one to replace my old diy forge, theyre really nice kits.

Brosif, I have to say this is amazing work. You truly have a gift. In my 35 years of life, I have never seen a metal bender make round shapes.. Maybe I've been living under a rock, but you sir have opened up a new option for me to try! How do you like the welding table so far. I read that it's cast iron.. Does that make any difference to iron sheet when welding, or strength? TIA!

Always wanted to make a boat with a jet drive, just a tip when welding Ali clean it with a wire brush or flap disc just before you weld it as you need to remove the oxcide lair before welding and make sure it's really clean , the oxcide has a higher melting point than the Ali.

Aluminium forms an oxide layer almost instantly that interferes with welding so you should grind or wire brush it of around the welding areas right before welding. You may want to wipe it of with alcohol as well as the plastic film might have left some residue on the surface.
@SilvaDreams

Most would say acetone since it will remove any oils better than alcohol... And some welders would say it's pointless but they are likely ones doing shitty welds.

In my opinion it looks like you did a pretty darn good job for attempting that for the first time. I did however thought that instead of using the aluminum spacer you welded to make the pivots for the turning device which you also threaded in order to use a bolt for fastening the part that pivoted to provide the ability to turn would worry me because of the bolt backing out and resulting in loosing the ability to steer the craft.This brings me to suggest from experience when relying on the mechanical reliability of such design to use a sturdy dowel pin in replace of a bolt.The dowel pin can be welded to the turning device giving you a more reliable pivot.To implement a sleeve on the dowel pin for added wear longevity would be even better,that choice is up to the builder.You will need to install one dowel pin with the pivoting turning device attached, then insert the second dowel threw the pivoting turning device and weld that dowel.Unless a dowel is torn off or another part has a catastrophic failure,you should never loose the ability to turn while the flow of water is being properly supplied .I know I'm not the best at describing things but hopefully it makes some sense. Never the less,well done my friend,you will be building better than most they call experts sooner than you think.
