Project Inspired By: Ritchie Kinmont with www.sonicdad.com (bit.ly/SDRandomizerProject)
Project History & More Info:
This project was inspired by my good friend Ritchie Kinmont with www.sonicdad.com.
We collaborated together on a design for a rocket that could be powered by the sugar motors I showed you how to make in a previous video (bit.ly/SugarRocket) made with PVC, sugar, kitty litter, and stump remover.
The new “Screw-Lock" version features threaded PVC risers, that allow the motors to quickly be changed, for faster turn-around times, and they have built in ejection charges for popping out the parachute at apogee.
Last year I promised that if there was enough interest, I'd try to develop a rocket that could be used with the sugar motors .. and my goal was to build a version where the sugar motors could screw onto the bottom of the rocket for convenience.
At the beginning of the year, the Sonic Dad team reached looking to do some kind of a collaboration, and the timing was perfect. So I asked Ritchie if he could help me engineer a sugar rocket.
Most rocket clubs won't let you fly sugar motors, except on special experimental launch days. However, the “Randomizer” rocket can also be used with commercial “Estes” D12-3 and E9-6 black power motors. So if you go with those, there's a good chance they'll let you fly your rocket at any club launch.
The rocket can fly over 1,000 feet high, and depending on the winds, can stay in the air for around 5 minutes while it floats back to the ground, so it's important to be super cautious where, and when, you launch to avoid doing any damage.
This video completes the rocket building series, and I'm really excited to share my passion for building and launching rockets with completely home-made equipment. In my opinion, it's the best way to learn about how rocketry really works.

Saved. Love this build! I wish there was a bit more detail on how exactly the parachute deploys. I guess it's just a loose fit and the momentum of the chute wad pops the cap off(once the rocket stops moving forward)?

The black powder in the top of the rocket creates a pressure wave when it is ignited by the time delay mix and that pressure deploys the parachute

I don't understand how the parachute deploys in this rocket? I'm guessing once it falls the air shoots up the rocket and pops the top cap off automatically? Seems like it'd be kinda hit or miss though?

@lochinvar00465 5 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. In fact, I have successfully used umbrella fabric to make parachutes for rockets. My big rocket actually has two of them, one 4' and one 5'.(it weighs about 6 lbs)

The rocket works great, except that the motor needs to be inside the rocket body (less than an inch should be hanging out) so that the center of gravity is moved up towards the nose cone. It will come off of the launch pad much straighter. A friend built two of these. One he made exactly like the video and one with the modification I suggested above. Both fly great, but the one with with the design in this video comes off the launch pad slightly sideways before the aerodynamic forces on the fins cause it to straighten up. I believe it is because the center of gravity is too low. The rocket with the modification came off the launch pad beautifully and flew straight. Where you move the motor mount depends on whether you plan on building the screw lock engines or using Estes engines. They are different lengths.

Wolf Lahti by that logic we would never have a language. The correct English (both American and English) pronunciation is ˈdiˌkæl' or as the parent comment said, 'D-Cal'. Everything else is wrong, just because some people say it differently doesn't make it right.
