Bob is one of my favorite makers, but this didn't turn out how I expected... The final shape was close to "Eiffel Tower", but I think a wide base pyramid would be more fun. Maybe starting the horizontal ropes at the bottom corners instead of the top would prevent it from closing in like a square rope ladder?

Indeed. The foam thing is pretty cool, but the strength is probably good for fence posts as he said it's made for, but a much taller structure that people will be climbing on? I would go with concrete.

Before you cut the rope, do a couple of wraps of electrical tape. Then you can cut through the middle of the tape leaving both ends neat and tidy. Finally, burn the ends.

Another hint: for the knots to avoid getting smaller, use the butterfly knot! They are really strong and used for many climbing applications, so they'd be a good fit for the project. Also I'd cut the bolts and use a ring nut, that way you save on bolt holes and avoid any sharp threads sticking out

Great project idea. I’m interested to see how long this project will last. The outer anchor points were already moving when the kids climbed on them and the center post was moving quite a bit when Bob climbed. Does this project have longevity? Or will it be more of a seasonal thing?

PLEASE FIX THOSE BOWLINES! The bitter end should NOT come to the OUTSIDE of the loop. It can catch and cause the knot to invert.

Also, overhand knots inline are not a good idea. Use something like an alpine butterfly instead. Also, make sure it's a rope rated for exterior use(uv degrades nylon rope such as climbing rope) and I would suggest putting them under more tension, maybe use a come a long to be sure. It will sag quickly otherwise.

Talks about how safety is the number one concern and how your materials need to have a higher working load then you think you need. Then proceeds to use post foam and twist ground stakes to anchor everything 😳. This is a great project but please if you plan to do this use concrete to anchor everything including the ropes. I really don't expect this to last. one good rain will make all your hard work fall apart. Maybe that's what you were going for? Something that will last a few days so your kids can play on it and then you can easily take it down?

Instead of using an overhand on a bite or figure 8 on a bite like he did to attach the ropes in the middle, use an alpine butterfly knot. Its used by climbers to attach to the middle of ropes because it wont tighten as the rope goes taught.

Obviously if you know what you’re doing, you’re going to get concrete. That’s done to death in many many videos. But for some people they don’t know, don’t want to, or can’t concrete. In that case it’s cool to show off an alternative. Additionally if someone is looking to complete this as a “one day project”, which seems doable, concrete cure wouldn’t work. Set in 3mn is a lot better. Lastly, the mix is $10 and should be equal in volume to 50 pound bags of concrete. So still more expensive, but not that bad.

Public park near us has several of these and the kids love them. Especially one set up that uses two poles and has essentially a rope suspension bridge between the two climbing poles. The "bridge" is triangular with one high rope and two low ropes, with cross rope weaving them together. Because its public park apparatus, the poles are steel and all the rope connection points are coated in epoxy.

Great project ! Seems easy enough to build it on your own ;) One thing though, you should have used a butterfly knot (some schemas here www.petzl.com/US/en/Sport/Knots) for the intermediate knots. With this, when pulling on the rope on each side of the knot, you pull on the natural direction, whereas with the chosen knot if you do the same you are not following the natural direction of the ropes outside the knot !

The look on the mom's face at 9:42 is all you need to know about how much she trusts that structure. Also the comment section is full of actual good advice if you want to build something like this yourself. Which if you follow that advice you'll end up with something that doesn't look anything like this death trap.

would screwing the eye bolts into the middle of that post compromise the integrity or do you think it would actually make it stronger? Or honestly neither? Also I just feel like the top of the post needs a little flag! I don't know why but I think that would just really add something to it! Really neat diy, I like that it seemed like a one day project (all day, but just one). I feel like the kids will be sitting on the ropes near the top and just hang out there. That seems like something I would have done as a kid.

Use a 12' pole so you can put at least 3-4' into the ground and then I would definitely like to see what you tie this into, because as a standalone toy I think it's going to move around a lot and there's nothing else to climb onto as you reach the top, like some monkey bars. I would also like to know cost for the entire build from the actual store purchases.
