Come along and see how to build a grow light set-up to start seeds and grow plants. I'll show you my new indoor shelf and light system, it's not too difficult. I'll give you the key factors to look for in choosing your lights and show you the materials I've chosen.
These are the products I purchased, I know many will ask.

My seed starting shelves looks like yours! The only place I have is in my front room/kitchen/dinning room window.But have found that having the drapes to cover the grow lights keeps it easy on the eyes - I just pull the drapes closed around the shelves. Also, I've found it is an excellent place to tie bundles of herbs to dry.They hang nicely, look pretty and the AC blows on them so they dry quicker and stay green. I know people will say it's an eye sore but not to my gardening eyes. I love watching the seedlings grow. Good video!

Scott! Welcome back. I had missed you sir. A break is good, sometimes. I hope you and your family (and Pheobe!) are doing well. I don't have as much space (for planting or seeding) so I have a smaller setup on a 2.5 ft 3 tier shelving unit. Works well for me. I have just harvested my first okra from my cloth pots. Had some nice air fried okra for dinner last night. (I did supplement with some from the farmers market.) I am up to my ears in lunchbox peppers. My spouse has been using peppers in at least one meal a day to keep up with our harvest. Take care sir. And thank you for making these videos.

Having a lighted grow shelving station has been a game changer for me. Adding heat mats has also been a necessary component. After my fall seedlings were ready to be potted on and hardened off, I started using the system for seed drying of okra, long beans, purple hull peas, and flowers. One suggestion- since you’re on carpet you might want to put something waterproof under your system to catch any drips.

You have green grass! My grass is yellow/tan. We've had just over 1/2" of rain since late June. Less than an hour north they've had rain, an hour south they've had rain, we just can't catch a break. Today we got 1/8", which is the most we've gotten in a single rain event in the past eight weeks.

So, I'm developing my wish list, and one of the things is "build a seed starting station" - I close that file & log in to KZfaq, and this video pops up on your channel - go figure! EDIT: And now I'm jealous! I bought very similar shelves for long term pantry storage and I paid a LOT more than you did, and mine come with only four shelves - DRAT!!! My only consolation is that the shelves I got might support more weight than yours, necessary for me if I'm filling them with canned goods & bulk dry goods, not so necessary for you if you're filling them with seed starting trays.

I bought my seed starting setup two years ago. Six 3600L/5000K led shop lights from Menards for $14 each. Since the lights are going to be close to the seed trays, if you can, take off the diffuser cover. Some lights wont let you, but you can get 300-500L more if you can. I was able to unscrew and remove one of the end caps on mine and slide them off. Another must have is a timer, unless you are 100% going to be on time turning the lights on and off.

I started some determinate tomatoes a few weeks ago and plan on planting the 2nd weekend of September, hoping to do better than my spring tomatoes. The heat came on so early this year , my tomatoes stopping setting by the middle to end of June.

I'm glad that you're talking about grow lights. I was thinking doing a very small set up with an old flexible lamp and grow light bulb(s) but wasn't sure if that would be much use to me for late August and fall planting. I don't know if I put the plants in shadier area outside, maybe under tulle for protection, for a while while I start another batch under the grow lights. I'm mainly doing some planting in containers and storage totes at home but would like to donate some plants to friends and a local food growing project. Not sure if it might make more sense to create some shade and protection in the totes and not get a growlight. I like multi-tasker tools. In this case, not just for one season. I'm not sure if I'd get much use out of growlight, so I'm watching you to see how you work with them.

Welcome back Mr. Scott!! I have had no trouble with using CFL’s. They are fairly large. I believe they are 1500 lumens each. I have 6 of them. They save electricity better than other lights, you can get them as close as you want/plants can touch them without being burned and they are pretty cheap. This is the bare minimum though. You have a wonderful set up!

I bought similar strips, not quite but similar. You have a plastic diffuser which is going to spread your light horizontally, diverting lots of light horizontally. After a bit of research, I cut the diffuser away from each strip, forcing the light downward, which gave my seedlings much more light

You just described my garden, a weedy mess that needs to be weed wacked down and covered by heavy black plastic! I got started and then my trimmer decided it didn't want to run. It is cooler here than last month, but the humidity is still really high. I have my seed starting rack in my east facing spare bedroom and my final decision is to only start my cabbage inside this fall. Peas, carrots, beets radish and lettuce are all going to be direct sow. God bless and keep growing! P.S. missed your videos, but life does happen outside of KZfaq!

Hey Scott... It's with a very heavy heart that I ripped out my 2 cucumber plants today. Diseased and only produced 5-6 small puny cucs from both plants total. Getting really depressed from my garden this year. Was so excited, grew all my seedlings from scratch. Tomatoes are the only thing producing "somewhat". Ripped out all my lettuce and bok choy as well. Peppers and beans aren't producing anything and some of my pepper plants are nearly waist high. I fertilize and water regularly, and still nothing. I may not garden next year if my potatoes don't produce. Too much blood, sweat, and tears, and heartache.

Love the sword in the back corner! With your station being in a carpeted room, are you taking any extra precautions against water and dirt spillage? Maybe I'm just sloppy, but I'd worry about drips soaking into the carpet and going to mold--or even algae with all the good light from the grow lights above.

Thank you for this video. I bought a small unit that works like this a couple of years ago so that I could start some seeds and grow things in large tubs outside, since I don't have an area to grow in the ground. Health problems happened, and I have never been able to do that. My question is...would a grow system like this work to do more than just get the seedlings started? Meaning, could I just continue to grow the plants to maturity under the grow lights?
@ScottHead
@ScottHead Жыл бұрын
You need a lot of light to grow plants to maturity. I think it would work with this set up for some plants. The people you need to talk to are dope growers (really), they are experts at indoor growing. Maybe look up some YT channels that focus on that.

When they arrived, I thought I got the wrong product as they were listed as shop lights. Kind of threw me, I was expecting “grow lights” in the name.
