I probably watched 10 different videos to get my shed shingled properly and yours was the easiest to follow even with you forgetting to do some steps that didn't matter with the chronological progression of this task. I ended up watching your 20 times to make sure I got it right. My neighbors are impressed with the way it turned out and I eyeballed all my lines instead of using chalk tape. The shingles make my kit shed look custom! Thanks for a great walkthrough!

I think I must have watched every video you guys have on sheds...twice! By far, you guys exceed every other how-to video out there for shed building. I feel like my hand was being held through every step as I built my very first shed! I've got the rafters up and will be sheathing today. I am so glad I have you to turn to so I can get it right! Superb video - excellent! Mnay thanks. I looked at a lot of videos on reroofing a shed, and this was by for the most accessible, straightforward, clear guide to shingling a garden shed roof. I watched it repeatedly throughout my own simple project (8 x 6 foot garden shed) - the indexing of the video is great, the steps straightforward, and the instructions very clear. The rapid runthorugh on each step is very helpful - and the slower detailed explanation is perfect to guide the novice. Thanks!

Tom Silva (This Old House) demonstrated on one of the shows that installing the shingles a little past the drip edge helps move the water away from the shed. He also showed that water can run down a drip edge and curl back under it which is why he extends the shingles as far as he does.

Thank you so much. Just finished replacing my shingles on the shed. Followed your instructions step by step. iPhone in one hand on KZfaq and a hammer in the other . Results are excellent. Just a note to say not all brands have same dimension shingles such as BP Dakota 3 tab shingles are a bit longer. But the steps were the same, just adjusted the numbers a bit. And it all worked out perfectly.

@icreatables - I’m following this video to build my shed roof and have two questions: 1) why didn’t he use the chalk lines after snapping them down? Seems like he provided too much overlap so that he could properly cover the nails that he nailed BELOW the tar strip instead of right above the tar strip. It seems to me that the best method would be to snap a line at every 6” to have a proper guide for each row of shingles, right? 2) In reference to my first question, why did he mail below the tar strip (in between the slit and tar strip) instead of right above the tar strip? This forces the next row to be lower to cover it and places the nail closer to the water source than necessary, right?

The 6” separation on this was because the shingles were 3 tab. The separation of the seam between rows is manufacturer and shingle style specific. I think 5 rows in a course is more common than 6 for houses. I think that works out to about 8”?

At the end, you say to use DAP Mastic on the nail heads. I think it is a little late to tell me that I'm on row 8 now. Do you mean just on the nail heads for the cap since it was mentioned after those instructions. Or are you saying from the beginning. Every nail in this project? Or the top two / last 2 nails on the last piece of shingle since it is exposed. I appreciate all your help!

How long should the nails be? If they penetrate through the roof there is a different environment than an attic space where humid air is not likely to nucleate dew. Ace HW roofing nails are shiney compared to Grip-Rite. But, it's hard for me to locate shorter Grip-Rite nails.

Because it’s a shed’s roof (not your house’s roof). Plus, it depends on your area’s climate (if it’s super windy, then having a starter strip on the rake’s side is a necessity).

I just spent all day shingling my shed per these instructions and my entire eve has nothing to bond to because the video instructs you to put the tar side down on the starter strip... The wind will tear these shingles off in a heartbeat. I'll have to use a bunch of roofing cement to seal the bottom of my shingles down...
@julesl7679

No the tar side is up but the starter strip should be at the bottom of the roof so your first row sticks down by the tar strip. It keeps them from blowing up.

Wait, so why do you need a starter strip? Also, so the 1st course of shingles goes over the starter strip??
@Gear1993Head
@Gear1993Head 5 жыл бұрын
The starter strip has the tar strip you need on it for the first row of shingles to "bond" to. Otherwise a big gust of wind would rip your first row off easily.
@Jeff82556
@Jeff82556 4 жыл бұрын
If you skip using a starter shingle, the "slots" on first row of installed shingles would show felt paper instead being on top of a starter shingle. Naturally the felt paper would not last very long before you have leaks that rot out the eaves - both fascia and soffit would rot. (the first row of ANY roof must have a layer of starters for protection)

Hi, both sides of the starter strip have a tar strip on them to allow them to stick to both the roofing paper and the shingle installed on the top. The reason they are installed upside down is because if there is any color showing on the top side it will not show. In the case of this video they could have been installed right side up. Thanks for your great comment.

iCreatables Hmmm...I don't understand the issue with color showing other than if you you used a starter strip of a different color than the actual shingles, but maybe I'm not understanding you correctly. Also, the shingles (from which I cut the starter strip out of) that I'm using are not sticky on the underside. I'm still struggling to see any reason to install it upside down. Anyway, apart from that, this is a very clear and helpful video so thank you.
@MalieusGaming
@MalieusGaming 9 жыл бұрын
iCreatables ok, this info is incorrect. You are NEVER supposed to install shingles upside down , it was never designed to shed water or resist elements with the bottom side up. They are meant to be installed with the top of the shingle facing the fascia, but with the gritty side up ALWAYS. Also there should be starter up the rake, not just at the eves.
@terrybyrd3738

The slots are open on subsequent strips, thus offset to keep rain off the roof. Now back up a step - with the starter strip there are no slots. I never bothered cutting off the tabs - just flip the bottom course over.

I wish I had taken carpentry when I was young so I would know how to do this for myself. Andrew Marroquin considering this is a small shed and these shingles probably cost about $25 a bundle I would say maybe 4-5 bundles so $100 in shingles the paper they used here is about $25 a roll premade drip edge is about $4-$5 a piece they probably used 4-5 pieces so say all together maybe $150-$200 But price heavily depends on types of shingles i would nightly recommend GAF architectural shingles they are much nicer and will last much longer than the 3 tab shingles seen here for about $5 more a bundle

28 seconds into this video you show the drip edge on top of the tar paper then 57 seconds in you say to put it under the tar paper why?

Look a little closer. The eave drip edge goes under the tar paper, and the gable end drip edge goes over the tar paper. It's a little tough to see at 0:28, but it's consistent with what he says - and it's the correct way to do it.

We put the drip edge over the tar paper on the eave and gable ends and have had no problem. It's a 3 inch edge with a half inch hanging, so that's 2.5 inches snug on the tar paper. We also used a sealant around the edge when installing the shingles

@@alicecurtiss959 to my knowledge the only state in the entire US that permits your method by code is FL. All 49 other states require that the paper go over the drip edge at the eave. In FL we do it your way with paper under the drip edge at the eave due to hurricane winds. This method REQUIRES a 4” wide roof cement strip over the drip edge and paper.
