Tactical Rifleman has gotten a number of requests, on how to setup a Sniper Firing Position. Yes, we read your comments. Got a good idea for a video? Ask and you shall receive. So, this week we are going to talk about building a solid (and accurate) sniper firing position.
If you take nothing else away from this video; please remember that Consistency is the Key to Accuracy. You have to have ammo that flies the same speed every time. You have to have a bullet that has a consistent weight and shape every time. Likewise, you have to build a launch platform, that launches that bullet the same every time.
The Sniper has to be as comfortable as possible and have a good “natural point of aim.” Relax on the gun, with your eyes closed. When you open your eyes, you should not see any shadow around the scope. If you do, your head is not centered behind the scope, and you need to adjust your stock and eye relief. If you open your eyes and your cross hairs are not centered on the target, then your natural point of aim is off, and you need to move the gun. Small corrections can be done by just moving the gun. However, major corrections, you may need to move/adjust your whole position.
We are also going to talk about laying in the Spotter. Remember, a Sniper position is a two man team. The Sniper has to be comfortable. Lay the Spotter in so that his Spotter Scope is as close to “gun line” as possible, without bumping the sniper. Also, make sure that the legs of your spotting scope aren’t near the elbow of the sniper. Otherwise, when the gun goes off, his elbow may bump your spotting scope and you won't see shit. The key to a good Spotter Location is that he has to be able to read “Trace.”
So, lay your Shooter in. Make him get a good position. Then lay in your Spotter around him. Focus on doing it the same way every time. Remember, Consistency is the Key to Accuracy. Thanks for Watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

Several point that I did not know, Thank You. I would point out not everyone can put the feet flat so you do the best you can and do not bounce them, just relax and let them settle out. I say this from a personal physical condition experience.

Question: How do i do the lied down position when i an whitouth a Bipe ?
@0Pr0ph3t0
@0Pr0ph3t0 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, hope you guys don't mind me asking a question because I watch a lot of your videos and really like the way you explain things. Once upon a time I was reading in a SWAT manual that you shouldn't put the bipod ahead of the mat or gunbag, rather ON it because that way it prevents dust and dirt from kicking up into the barrel and such, plus I think it adds to concealment. How do you feel about that ? Is it accurate/impractical etc.. Would like to hear your thoughts on this
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 5 жыл бұрын
THe kicking up of dust comes from the muzzle blast, not the bipod legs. If you have enough cloth, put a skirt out in front of the gun. Example: the Barrett .50cal shooting mat comes with a roll out fan that goes out 6 feet in front of the barrel and has loops for pinning it to the ground. Thanks for watching, TR.

I am right handed, left eye dominant and for 40 years have shot a right handed bolt gun left handed. Is there any advice or videos you could recommend for long range shooting in this manner?
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 5 жыл бұрын
Running a right-handed boltgun left handed is actually faster for reloading when firing from a bipod or other rest, as your right hand if free to work the bolt while your left hand is still on fire controls and holding stock on your shoulder

What if they want to snipe from building ? They have to do it knees right
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 4 жыл бұрын
Snipers practice “alternate firing positions” such as kneeling & sitting, with shots 4 inches to 72 inches off the ground. However, first position to master is Prone. We would often shoot prone from buildings, by building shooting positions on beds or tables

The gun is an expansion of the body full stop, its that simple, no matter what the platform, if you dont get that, then your either not into ELR shooting or not even shooting with a scope for like Helicopter feral pig shooting for example ? Which is track and shoot and 9/10 its a hit all the time now thats sniping ?

Is there a reason (better view, comfort, etc..) the spotter & his scope usually seem to be propped up higher than the shooter? And how often do they switch out positions, if ever?
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 6 жыл бұрын
The goal is to have the Spotting Scope as close as possible to the rifle bore, to better allow observation of Trace. So, directly above works well. Above and behind allows more comfort. As for swapping out... we swap every couple of hours to prevent eye fatigue.
@blwngt1598
@blwngt1598 6 жыл бұрын
Tactical Rifleman I appreciate the reply, & a damn fast 1 at that. As for switching out & eye fatigue, don't rifle scopes & spotting scopes generate about the same amount of eye fatigue? If they do, how would switching between the 2 help rest your eyes? Is it because you can use both eyes with the spotting scope? *Side Note* I greatly appreciate the informative & educational videos that everyone at Tactical Rifleman puts out & a deep gratitude for those of you there that have or are serving, so thank you.

When I shoulder like that, the recoil hits right into my collarbone. After 15-20 shots from .308, it is uncomfortable enough for me to start flinching. Is that supposed to be happening? Should I shoulder it differently or do I just man up and get used to a bruised collarbone? Thanks.
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 6 жыл бұрын
You need to raise the height of your rifle so that you need to bring your elbows in to support the back of the rifle. This will raise your chest off the ground a bit more, which with cut down on breathing and heart beat interference. It will also rotate that butt pad down to below your collarbone. It should sit in the pocket right under your collarbone. Hope this helps, TR

Think of a rifle as a big tuning fork, the steel moves a certain way in a given position change how it sits and/or pressure points the frequency changes and so does the point of impact. Even a solid bar if dropped on concrete gives a particularly specific harmonic ping depending how it lands. For one step further in the world of machining poor harmonics are a very bad thing.
