How to build a subwoofer. Passive radiator sub build part 2!

In this video I finish the build and give it a TEST BUMP! Let's see what 11 mm of xmax looks like on a passive radiator.
You will see in the video that the woofer makes some mechanical noise at high-volume and low frequency. This is not a flaw with the woofer, the design of my enclosure allows the cone to exceed x-max at ultra-low frequencies. In future videos I plan to adjust the tuning of the PR to fix this issue.

I know this is an old video but, typically with a "sub-woofer" passive your dealing with a passive radiator greater then the bass driver. I/E bigger diameter and/ or longer excursion passive. Also the enclosure is not properly done. The sound deadener just puts a band-aid on a persistent problem, the enclosure should be thicker or have internal supports. Deadener is better suited for vehicles to reduce resonance, doesn't work well in an enclosure since it isn't as ridgid as wood and isn't as absorbing as insulation. Proper bracing, better passive, you should see much better results, also make sure to have the right amount of weight(s) on the passive. You can add or take away washers to the passive radiator to "tune" the output. A thin layer of batting or insulation around the inside should bring that resonance down significantly.

In this build I was really trying to make it look good. The stained wood contrasted well with the duratex. As far as the sound, it was fine, but it can't get down low.

DIY Audio Guy I’m watching your video with the winisd modeling and I think the steep drop off below 50 hz is what’s causing the issues on the lower end
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 5 жыл бұрын
@@HifiVega yep. I didn't show the xmax in that video, but below 50 HZ both the driver and the PR completely unload. I was fully ready for that. The driver xmax is only 4.5mm, the PR is 11. Both of them are well beyond their limits at 45 hz. I have plans to bring this up in future videos.

Yep, I have some newer PR videos. When I made this project I was trying to get a feel for how passive radiators are designed. The big thing that I learned is you've really got to pay attention to the X-Max of the drivers, you don't want to exceed X-Max on the passive or the active.

Caught (2) Skar IX-8D2 and an MB Quart mono amp for stupid cheap. Working with a limited available space under driver seat of a Can Am Defender. Was gonna do a single sealed, common chamber downfire, but looking at possibly opposing sealed. Single with a PR is an option as well. Single ported will work, but my reflex enclosure building skill just aren't quite there. At least in my head. Plus, it's not completely enclosed, so there's a cabin gain loss as well. It's only going to be "so" good. 😆

Great video i enjoy the content. I've been building subwoofers and enclosures as a hobby since high-school. Keep the great content coming. Definitely "sub"ed to your channel. Pun totally intended. My most recent fun project was building my first 1:1 ratio 4th order enclosure using an old 90's earthquake audio 18 i picked up for cheap. The best part is the looks on listeners faces when i tell them I'm only powering it with 40 watts. It has a pretty impressive bandwidth. It peaks around 60hz on the sealed side and the ported side is tuned to 32hz. It's comfortable playing in the 20hz range as well. Can't wait to see more content or your channel.

I know this is old so im sure he had learned now but i always go with 2 PR of the same size as the active driver. Because I learned the with just one PR its so easy to over load it and reach its xmax and push to distortion. So i cut a new hole in the back of my box behind the first PR and man it was a big difference. It played lower tones louder and really took most of the active drivers cone movement away at the frequency's I tuned the PRs for. (32hz) Its 1, 10 inch mid range driver i made as floor standing speakers so 2 boxes the has 1, 10 inch mid bass driver, 1, 6.5 inch midrange driver, 2, 4 inch tweeters and 2, 10inch PRs in each box. They sound like they have subwoofers built in lol perfect for movies and games. Music needs a little help from a real sub but they still kick

Parts express has a 12" passive radiator on close out right now. They're only 25 bucks a piece. I learned a lot on this passive radiator project, I put it together mostly so that I can have a chance to experiment with passives. I think the router really is necessity for making perfect circles and putting the finishing touches on a project. I've seen some woodworkers make use of a jigsaw and a spindle sander to get close to the same effect. As far as the table saw goes I have found that this is a good affordable alternative kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hL2SeJagv8quiKc.html

Probably not. The main reason why I used that was because I happend to have some on hand and I wanted to add a little extra vibration dampening.

I love you're videos and the inspiration you make for people... Check out my amateur videos of my passive radiator subs. They gives a punchy bass all the way down to 20Hz. The small subwoofer I use in my car cost me about 25dollars to make, because the Rockford punch driver needed a bit glue to work properly. The passive radiator was a completely blown sunfire hrs-10 driver I got for free. And the box was also a blown subwoofer with a 8" woofer. The Rockford punch driver is rated to 250w rms, but it makes an impressive spl with the passive radiator well below 25Hz. To make the radiator I cut off the magnet, made a flat round aluminium membrane. Filled the cavity between the 2 membranes with building foam. And added about 260grams of weight in the voicecoil with a chemical concrete.
