I was looking for a way to make a quick playhouse for the grandkids and I found this correct and easy way to make a portable and roomy teepee for the whole family. Nice! 🙌👏🍻👍

There should be more Native American influence in regular homes. It's efficient.

A real TiPi has an inside liner that is several inches off the ground and several inches from the top. While the outside water proof cover goes into the ground and all the way to the top, leaving about a 12”hole at the very top. The inside and outside liner have about a 6 inch space between them. This creates a draft for the smoke to go out the top hole.

Whenever I hear some ignorant person say that the Native Americans were technologically primitive, I just scoff and think, “Dude...the Plains people invented the perfect, portable, all-weather shelter. And they invented it back when Europeans were still trying to figure out basic agriculture.”

I'm aspiring to replicate a teepee for my class, this is absolutely amazing! Give so many props to the Native Americans.

A correct Teepee has an inner lining that is mounted inside the poles, goes tight to the ground, and is only about 1/2-2/3 as high as the junction of the poles. The outer shell is mounted a few inches off the ground on the outside of the poles and, of course, extends to the junction of the poles and even a bit above. The gap between these inner/outer layers turns the whole interior space into a type of chimney, keeping the smoke from the central fire rising out the top instead of filling the interior. There is an opening above the door which can be opened and closed with two moveable poles for added/lessened ventilation. I saw these instructions back in the 1970s in a publication/newsletter from the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyoming.

The pioneers seemed truly amazed that adding more poles to their lodge would make it more sturdy......They'll be floored when they discover TP...[toilet paper].

I find survivalism interesting and I live in northern Canada. Assuming in a worst case scenario that one is lost in the bush, survives a plane crash or something similar, I'd like to know how to make a tipi without being prepared for it. In other words, one could cut poles, use strips of bark or tree roots for rope, but what to cover it with if you don't have anything else? Evergreen branches? That won't keep water out it if rains. Bestow your wisdom upon me! :)

I like the large heavy Tipi's, wish I had one. I had to make one from Tyvek home rap and used Bamboo poles. At 21ft, I can park my truck in it. I have to be careful not to put it up out in the open because it is so lightweight but its very easy for one old broke down dude to put it up in about a half hour. Made a few videos and posted them on my project channel and plan another smaller build and how to or do it yourself videos. Tipi's are awesome, easy to heat and cooler when the sun comes up on warm mornings. Greatest portable tent style shelters mankind has ever built. Nothing comes near the comfort in the cold when one uses even the smallest open fire inside.

🤣 WOW.🤣 That was hilarious🤣. It is a lot simpler. The tripod sloped forward. Door poles facing East, Three poles between each space-back space filled last. The last pole with the canvas lashed to the top is the lifter in place, and the cover is rolled out. Then, stake the whole thing down, leaving it three to five inches above the ground. It can be done in eight minutes with two people. 15 with inside liner in place. The directions must have been written in a foreign language. 🤔🤔🤔

I thought there needs to be a small gap between the ground and the cloth? That way, when you light a fire in the center, the cooler wind shoots in under you and hits the fire and carries the smoke straight up. This is also the reason why natives would sleep on beds the lined the teepee, but the beds more so resembled thin benches made of wood. Could be wrong here, but that's what I remember reading about.

In 1999 a Canadian version of this experiment was on tv, it's on Hulu that's how I know. It lasted between 10-20 episodes, bc they were serious about going ALL IN. they started in summer and spent a whole 12 months in the wild Canadian praries. But this version is weak, only 6 episodes and more talking than working, and so many commercials when it's on tv too. Nah-uh, this ain't even close to the real thing. They should try again, less help from production, for a whole 12 months, and give it 24 episodes. Or at least that's how I'd do it.

Of all the tribes and im South african this has to be the fastest construction out of any type there is on the planet. You can have serious shelter in a very short space of time and its lite you can carry the canvas anywhere and find new trees easily in that part of the world. It is very veey simple strong and effiecient. Maybe the best survival technique one can learn.

Actually you're supposed to tie the canvas to the last pole _before_ lifting it into place. Much easier than trying to hoist with a rope

None of these people have any idea what they're doing! The canvas is folded into a narrow strip, and tied to the final pole as it's lifted in place. A tipi can easily be pitched by one person who has read the Laubin book. (Although when alone, one needs a shovel to hold the south pole while lifting the tripod).

How to build a canvas tipi. Who cares? Canvas? Really? Who cares? Canvas. Garbage . It will fail when you need it most. I would so love to hear a knowledgeable Indian speak about how to make a real one with Buffalo hides. How to join the hides How to prepare the sinew (I'm pretty sure they used sinew) for joining hides. I don't want to put anyone down but c'mon. Winter can bring blizzards and extreme cold. Canvas might get you through one but two....I doubt it.... How could hide not be vastly superior? But I don't know.....I may be full of bull.
