Hello Jon Peters, I am a hobby bee keeper from France and I use the hives my Dad had built back in the fifties. They often need reparing and fixing and I spend quite some time in my workshop sawing, cutting painting. I really enjoyed watching your videos.. I

Finished my first one, thanks for the easy to follow instructions. Always could fall back on the video too. :) The plan was awesome, maybe though you could include a hardware list of what is needed, size, etc. That would let a person like me, without a lot of construction experience really feel secure! Thanks again!

***** Thanks for the quick reply Jon. I also researched the Warré hive and will eventually build or buy one or more. It looks like it may be the best of both worlds, Top Bar and Langstroth. FYI I found Warré plans at theselfsufficientliving.com/10-free-langstroth-and-warre-or-top-bar-beehive-plans/ BTW, your plans, especially part 1, are very difficult to read due to JPEG compression. I highly recommend you save drawings a GIF file to prevent this problem. I'm in the process of re-drawing the plans in Visio and will be happy to share them with you and your followers when finished. A free Visio reader is available on-line from Microsoft.

Did you consider putting the hinges on the long side? The hinges could go on the side where the bees enter making hive inspection more convenient and less intrusive on the bees.

Great Part Two! Noticed we have (it appears) the same 14" BS. I was disappointed with mine. I had a SEARS tilting arbor BS and sold it to get the $$ to buy the Delta. Almost instantly the tilt arbor broke and I discovered it (and the only replacement available) were made of pot metal. I was also surprised to find it didn't appear to have much power. I wondered if you had found any issues with yours and (esp) if you 'fixed' any! BTW: When attaching the roof (in Part One) you added a strip of wood to the exterior end panel. Then (in Part Two) you layered another 1/4" thick piece on top of the first piece. Then when attaching the hinge, added a shim to the 'lid' (roof) leaf of the hinge to effectively move the roof 'over' 1/8" I cant' recall the dimension given for the first piece - but will call it 3/4" for sake of simplifying this suggestion. Since you added 1/4" to the 3/4" strip, then 1/8" to the hinge leaf, the first strip added should be equal to 6/8 + 2/8 - 1/8 or 7/8".

Hi Jon-Just watched your video/part 1 & 2. I raised bees as a teenager(my dad had a couple of hives and my brother and I took over for a few years). We always had to put a smaller entranceway to the honey boxes to keep the queen and drones out, and isolate the brood boxes. How does that separation work here, and is it not even necessary? Thanks for a reply. Bill B.
