If you don’t want your roof to leak I would use a product called Pro Seal. It’s a two-part adhesive/sealant. It’s the same stuff that is used to seal pressurized aircraft. It is designed to flex and not break a seal. As you can research airplanes that are sealed with this stuff last for 25 30 40 years or even longer .

This is the best DIY travel trailer build i`ve watched yet. Only thing different I would have done is for the roof trusses I would have used 2x6 and cut them in an arch so both ends of the piece are 4" and the very center is 6" to give the roof an arch and since plywood has a natural curve to it the curve would face down.

I was in the RV business in Michigan from the late 50s until the late 80's and still enjoy camping. The two things to come along I have learned are bad ideas are slide outs and rubber roofs. One of the best things to appear for rubber roof and metal roof problems is the product flex seal. No this is not Phil Swift!

For anyone building something like this, to put the curve on the roof, cut the 2 x 4's with a curve before installing them to give you the curve you require. This will save the step of customizing pieces on top to give you the curve you desire. This will be quicker, easier and give you a truly uniform curve. Then, on the bottom side of the 2 x 4 screw a shim across the entire length of the 2 x 4 so the inside ceiling will all be the same height with no ripples.

Great job, you will have fine unit when finished! My only suggestion would have been to put a slight arch in the roof. This could have been accomplished with just a belt sander. Any flat roof, wood or metal, will eventually develop small sags which will collect water, dirt and leaves, then mildew causing future problems? An arched roof will stay cleaner for months longer than a flat one! It took the manufactures thirty years to discover this!

Nice work and I would love to build one. A few suggestions come to mind. 1. Instead of Guerilla tape - use window flashing tape on all seams and edges ( Zip Systems or Polywall) 2. Instead of rounding the roof corners with a sander - use a plastic / HDPE bullnose 3. In episode 6 - I would have used zip system plywood for my flooring as it is waterproofed.

Love all the extra sealing you are doing. Water is the worst enemy lol. A little concern is all the screws. I know they hold tight but with all the bouncing around in travel, I hope they don’t shear. I know that’s why you want to use nails building a house as they allow flex. Not sure what the industry uses. Looking great and looking forward to the finished product as I’m sure you are as well lol.

When it comes to bubbles and stuff like that, it’s OK to take a razor blade and just give it a poke. It allows the air to escape and the adhesive will fill it in. I do this with stickers. Good advice stickers like “ Do not enter “ It still looks unnoticeable and would be fine.

Oh yeah to Douglas Scott. Thanks for recalling about solar array for this build. In opinion: Personally think this build has stirred up a lot and highly expect to see an enormous amounts of personal built trailers in the very near future. Economics has been a big part in all of this ideal. If I might ask, in the county you lived in: Was it necessary to have a builders permit and fee? Of course government must have its piece of the pie! As sung by Mr Bruce Hornsby, " That's, Just The Way It Is!"

What kind of teardrop camper build would you recommend for a hot tropical weather like Costa Rica? It has to be something light, that is basically a fridge to have an ac with propane or gas, and it also has to withstand heavy rains. What is the best option for the body of the camper. Epoxy Fiber with a foam or some sort of Styrofoam and a light wood or aluminum inside? I was thinking I only need it to be rigid on the outside so i could use something light to give it the finish for the inside, but not sure if that s a good idea. Thanks!

Can you tell us what the material is that you used on the sides between the diamond plate aluminum? You peeled off a backing, I was thinking a plastic sheet of some kind? It is the white panel. Lots of great info here 👍 I was going to ply over of the aluminum frame and cover with this stuff but seeing how unruly this rubber stuff is to put on, Im now thinking of doing an aluminum roof. 🤔 Finding it hard to find a supplier for a single piece aluminum so I may do 4x8 pieces. I will VHB tape under the seems to the aluminum roof frame, that is one layer of water proofing 🤞, and than a layer of double sided Eternabond over those seams with matching aluminum strips on top of them. All sound good in theory, but until the rubber hits the road, who knows! Cheers

This is giving me a ton of ideas . I could make it slightly longer so it could hold my bike in the back. Maybe stick some solar panels on top. The kind used on boats that are flat . You could just about cover it with them. A couple of batteries an inverter and charging off the truck and voila . You got power. Charge the whole battery bank on the way there , then the panels take over. Long as your appliances or lights had a low draw you could be relatively self sufficient.

I wonder why nobody ever puts the fan on a side wall near the roof, then not worry about having a flat roof? A box, clear or translucent plastic or even that aluminum flashing over it above and on sides, with an opening facing down would insure no water at all can get to it, or come inside trailer. A corner on rear or side wall would probably be best area to do that, not as great on front wall.

Too late for you now, but for anyone considering doing this, you used the self leveling caulk wrong. Self leveling caulk is intended to fill gaps and cracks, not to just be put randomly down. You should have cut those ridges down it will cause issues with the roof over time.
