Generally the main difference is just in size of urban land and population but depending on the area there are rules for gaining the titles. For the United Kingdom the main difference between a Town and a City is a cathedral. Any town can gain the title of a city if they have a Cathedral. This can be seen as a rule of thumb for most of Europe too (so ideal for medieval design). Cities also tend to provide more entertainment and utilities for their people in order to keep order. If you take Rome for example, having a Colosseum and other theatres was crucial to keep a large number of people in order. A city also needs more water input and wastage output so they tend to have greater channels. Villages tend to be directed for a specific use such as mining, farming, fishing and similar. they have a smaller population than a town and also tend to have less churches. UK also has one more title called Hamlet which is smaller than a village and consists of up to 5 houses. It has no churches and other stuff ... just houses.

@Handicapped Because it takes a beacon to utilize eff5. And beacons suck. 3 blocks range, take 20 billion diamond blocks to build... Oh yeah, and defeat 40 quadrillion skeletons to get the skulls and kill Wither. Which after that 3 years of farm non stop will seem easy even without glitching him into the bedrock. But if you have Botania - yep, eff5 =D Or Truncator.

@@RedGallardo well, nope, the Wither Skeletons skulls are hard to get but the 3 stacks of iron blocks for the beacon are very easy with an iron farm.
@RedGallardo
@RedGallardo 4 жыл бұрын
@SpartaNoob Dude, 23 stacks of iron just for 50 block radius. 3 chunks of slightly better chopping speed, then remove all this thing and build again. The damn pyramid takes as much time to collect, build and remove as you would take to clean 4 times the space with eff4. With maybe an exception of deep mining if you need to remove all the stone from that 50 block radius. For some project. Still need to move the crap. In my opinion only Botania does it right. To make the Mantle Ring it takes some time, then you need a mana pool, then you actually use this speed bonus all the time for a modest cost. Mana is used for more than 1 thing. Beacon takes weeks to make. Sure, the more you use it the more profitable it gets. Just measure the time you take to remove trees in, say, dark oak forest in 100x100 area. Then the time it takes to make a beacon from 0 to activated, including an iron farm and Wither summoning and defeating. Then how fast you do forest with beacon. The difference will be maybe 20 times less than beacon make time. Iron farm (128 houses) gives me about 32 iron blocks per hour. That's 46 hours. Even if you leave the game running AFK. And you need all 4 levels of pyramid to gain Haste 2. And don't get me started on RNG and how I spent weeks farming the damn skulls my first time. Making a wither skeleton farm would take just as much time. I remember I failed to understand how. It's easy... AFTER you build it once. I haven't. So on a huge server it would make sense. If you're rich and don't know where else to put res after building several castles - it works. If you need to clean land\mines over and over for years - that works. Otherwise you waste much more time than gain.

this is pretty awesome here's some extra advice from me i respect your method, but i personally wouldn't recommend planning in too much detail if you are more of a noob, i think it can be easy for people who aren't as comfortable with building stuff to get easily overwhelmed or unsatisfied if they plan too hard or too specifically, start off small I'd say with a clear idea in mind, like small farming village it seems to me a lot of people have a tendency to flatten out an area, do not do this. i would always recommend building into the environment as much as possible and trying to use it to complement how your buildings look (ie a house built partially inside a hill or an extended foundation from a house on a downhill spot) i usually try to find a body of water to settle near, as is true in real life of villages/towns/cities sometimes i'll start building what i want the central area to be and branch out from there, this can be good if you have a greater idea of what you want to do already try to use purely rectangular shapes as little as possible, using more complex shapes makes your build much more interesting i think that's helpful

One thought; one way to create a village core vs edge is to have groups of buildings with shared walls in the center, clustered around shared public spaces. This is clearly a first pass of just laying out areas to move onto the next stage of detail, but that might be one way to differentiate areas by using building forms in addition to spaces like plazas to signify different areas of a village. Tighter, denser, bulkier buildings could be a center of commerce or even a "poor", gritter area of town depending on how it's detailed. One thought (at 6:26); maybe look at flipping the yellow concrete road and the red buildings so that the path touches the edge of the plaza/market and then jamming some of those central buildings together to add some density at the core? I think folk might appreciate that this is an iterative process, and it's okay to adjust stuff as you start adding detail. One other great tool is using connections (roads and paths) to create hierarchy; a straight or wider "boulevard" with important buildings at ends helps create important views of distant landmarks (like a mountain or statue on a hill) or buildings (churches, etc). L'Enfant, Olmstead, and Le Notre were planner and designers that were great at utilizing those tools in city planning. Great work man, looking forward to how it all turns out :).

You're totally correct in regards to a wall/defense being a requirement for a town. It's what the word means and where it comes from: tun, Old English "enclosure, garden, field, yard", from Proto-Germanic tunaz, "fortified place", from Celtic dunon "hill, hill-fort", from PIE dhu-no- "enclosed, fortified place, hill-fort," from root dheue- "to close, finish, come full circle". A town is literally an enclosed place.

To differ from this, in terms of the comparison *between* villages, towns, cities and capitals, I like to think of settlements as a concentric circle of the local population or smaller scattering of such patterns across the landscape (the largest ones often trending towards cities and capitals), regardless of the distance between them. In terms of economies, the higher the sociopolitical environment, the larger the economies of scale. As for military/local securities, the authorities tend to be concentrated around chokepoints like a gauntlet, not just walling off large chunks of landmass as you would see most medieval fantasies (a central or strategic position in villages, a fortified parameter around the more important town areas, and surrounding a strategic central area of command in cities/capitals). That's my take on sociopolitical worldbuilding that I can think off the cuff in brief, but I do think of other facets like culture, religion, rebellion, squalor, natural disasters and aftermaths too in much more details.

My main build is on an island, and its a Mage town. Their main "export" is magical items and enchantments, a mages college, and with supplementary items being fishing and mining. The interesting thing though, is (from taking advice from you and others), in the lore of my world, while the island is defiantly more on the Mage/mystic side of things, they have a contingent of soldiers from another land-locked city there, for basic defense. They have a meeting room/war area underground (still in work), with an arch-mage who is in charge of the council. Anywho, I kinda like how you explain to others, great ways to improve their world, in regards to lore and direction (which I feel this video fits into.)

And if it's kinda dark, use a level 6 light block on the leaves to make it lighter. I did this but with a jungle and spruce, and also made a marsh and moor. It's by far my favorite world and it's great for wild roleplays, and warrior cats roleplays if you know what that is UwU

Unpopular opinion - i actually enjoy him showing the finished town first and then showing the planning process, I could distinctly see how he made the layout for buildings and can now build off that. If he finished every. Single. Building he drafted here on camera we'd be here all day. Literally.

A town needs 500 people at least, but a city needs 50 thousand people. So a city is 100 times the size of a small town. And a village only need any random population and a town center to be considered a village.

I build something like that for my main base, but much more smaller, like inside the walls are like 5 houses, all for different purposes, also I have 4 towers, inside the walls is a little mountain like 81 blocks tall where I build a mini fortress, I don t have a sea, instead I have a big lake that I connected to a river :)

fWhip if that ravine goes unused it'll be an actual crime. Obviously, villages need farms to sustain themselves, but there definitely should be mine workings in the ravine. It's such a great feature of the town area and an underused feature of worlds in building.

I feel like it would make much more sense to have the castle on the island with the tree on it, as most castles irl were little more than fortified houses, which I feel would fit the size of the village much better.

Exploring multiple hours to find a good spot. Done building the wall and buildings. " what if enemys siege this town and grapple over the wall" "its to close to a hill enemes can fire their arrows onto us from there" "did you remember not filling the empy space all the way? Now the structure cant be supported" everytime i try this i overthink to much but i cant help it xD had this problem in 1.4.7 stopped playing for a long time after that. Just got back into minecraft for 2-3 days and its happening all over again D:
