How to build an IB manifold for 2 18" subwoofers in car

Subwoofers used: Fi IB318v2
Infinite baffle application, subwoofers breathe to the outside of the car. so when the doors are shut, the car becomes the enclosure.
It results in the smoothest bass response with the lowest frequency extension you can imagine, playing down to single digit frequencies.
Other big benefit is sensitivity, hardly requires any power compared to conventional box setups.
You can find more info about the build here:

This looks really cool! I wonder why people put lots of money into ported and BP boxes when you can achieve more for less with this. I'd be intrigued to do something like this. How much power are we talking about here for decent levels? How sensitive is it for design accuracy?
@pssound9749
@pssound9749 6 жыл бұрын
I guess the sacrifice to cut the car puts many people off! It’s probably the most sensitive option you can have for low-end reproduction. The lower you go, the more sensitive it is and the less power it takes to get decent levels! I use ~ 300-400W under 20Hz to do 144-145dB levels, where it can do hairtricks! 😆
@freedblowfish3705
@freedblowfish3705 2 жыл бұрын
@@pssound9749 i think the sensitivity comment might have been reguarding to how getting the design slightly off will affect how it plays (eg: t-line subs being finnicky to build and usually needing adjustments after being built to get the exact planned results whereas sealed will give you similar results to what was planned as long as you are close enough, although it is really cool to know the sensitivity is high per watt. (Thats how i perceived the question anyways)

Hi Aaron, I’m not on Diyma, but somebody might have shared it there, not impossible. That can work too, but obviously the airspace of the trunk is limited, so needs careful driver selection.

Peter, I am curious, does this firing to outside sound much louder outside than a trunk to cabin IB? Because I want to use IB but I might not be able to do it to the cabin (not much room and hinges and a gastank), and I want it as silent as possible outside (maybe better stick with sealed box 😉, but its less fun)...
@pssound9749
@pssound9749 4 жыл бұрын
Explorin, learnin & doing Funnily true IB is not louder outside! Very simple example: it’s very easy to excite the air inside of the cabin, which is let’s say 3000L/100cuft and create SPL inside of the cabin. On the other hand you have INFINITE air space outside, which is not easy to excite, just like in live sound, where they need many huge bass cabinets to produce SPL.

Peter I understand the video is very old, but if you could give me some knowledge it would be much appreciated. I am brainstorming an IB build in a pick up truck. Does the area of the opening have to be greater than the cone area ? Or is there a rule of thumb to consider when trying to accomplish IB. My truck already has openings on the back of the cabin and if I can just build a thick enough baffle and bolt it to the back wall I’d rather just do that instead of cutting sheet metal. Thank you.

Let me get this straight. Drive around and everyone outside can hear the loud bass. And if you drive it in the rain there’s a possibility of water getting inside where the subwoofer diaphragms are?
@truckguy9413
@truckguy9413 5 жыл бұрын
Could this be done in a truck where the triangle sub enclosure would be in the bed of the truck? Then vent it IB thru the floor and rear wall. You’d need an enclosure to go around the triangle as well. I’m not sure if the enclosure around the triangle would restrict the air flow too much.
@pssound9749
@pssound9749 5 жыл бұрын
Truck Guy It doesn’t make much sense to me by this description. If you have a wall separating the cabin from the bed, then just let the subs breathe into the cabin through the wall, dead simple.
@truckguy9413

Pssound Thanks for the reply! I found the IB Facebook group and might post on there. It’s a mid size 4 door daily driver were the rear seats are really close to the rear wall. Plus a kid seat. I want to try IB because it doesn’t require a huge enclosure and it’s easy on the electrical but it might not work in my application. All I know is my 2 shallow 10s under the rear seat isn’t enough!
@NVMDSTEvil
@NVMDSTEvil 4 жыл бұрын
@@truckguy9413 Yes, for a truck with limited space behind the seats it is typically best to vent into the cabin; the best shape depends on the size and number of subs used. Even in the case of a car such as in the video a vent through the back seat (center arm rest "hole" if it has one works great) or through the rear deck would increase cabin gain.

do the sub's act as free air or ported?I always went with sealed enclosures. is it loud outside?
@pssound9749
@pssound9749 6 жыл бұрын
Let’s say they act as free-air, but free-air and infinite baffle are 2 different things i don’t have to explain, google does it better! 😃 In my case once the car is shut, the interior of the car becomes the box and you sit inside of the box as such. It’s surprisingly quiet outside, especially when it’s only used in such a low frequency range. It’s easy to excite the air inside of the cabin, which is 3000L let’s say compared to the outside which is...infinite!

Pssound thanks for the reply. o subbed to your channel . most ppl around here are SPL oriented. I like more sq. my systems always were large sub's In large sealed enclosures. back years ago. I'd say kicker solobaric was one of my favorite sub's. 15" . I have always had 12"-15"and 18" for low bass. I don't bother with anything smaller than a12", the qs of a 8" sub thrashing just isn't my thing. I'd rather have a decent 15" on 250watts. sorry for rambling. and thanks for the great videos!

@pssound9749 6 жыл бұрын
Hi James. It’s a true infinite baffle application in car. That foam at the bottom is to protect any moisture coming up from the road, which is not used anymore as there’s nothing coming up from the road at all and it’s in UK where it rains enough! 😃 Infinite baffle = IB is well know for the most effortless low-end bass production, where boxes can not even be compared to it. This setup is linear down to 12Hz!! Very sensitive, hardly needs any power. Accurate, fast, yet able to do crazy levels under 25Hz, where boxes struggle to play.

@@pssound9749 Always loved the IB set up, as you say just effortless and the sub feels so free to play the transients so sharp. but is this technically a sealed setup as the subs are firing into a sealed space in the well and manifold? or is the sealed space large enough to mimic IB? seems too small for 2x18 to be classed IB? welcome your thoughts!!!

@pssound9749 5 жыл бұрын
levrone007 I don’t get what sealed space you’re saying! On one side of the manifold you have the cabin of the car, on the other side you have the underside open airspace. The subs are breathing to the outside of the car. Did you watch the video all the way and listen to what was explained?

so are these considered free air subs? Where you don't need a box but you just don't want to share the air space with the front with the rear?
