A note on the tie rods. There really hasn't been many broken tie rods on stock geometry suspension. When they do break on stock suspension it's generally due to front locker use and the front end being bound up. With that said upgrading the tie rods to something stronger moves the weak point to your rack. A way more expensive and much much harder trail side fix.

Hey @JustinBMcBride, great job once again. Awesome build. I love RTR (just ordered their Project X light kit)... but, their tailgate reinforcement is a bit out of my budget at the moment. Do you think I can get by with the RC reinforcement like you did? Or, am I asking for tailgate issues when loaded up with the AAL Spare Tire Platform, roam box, and a standard sasquatch 35 spare? Realizing it is not your first choice, have you had any problems?
@JustinBMcBride
@JustinBMcBride Жыл бұрын
When at Johnson valley, I noticed that my door had slipped a little under the weight with the RC mount. I had to pull everything off and readjust it all. After that I was very careful on any whoops or washboards not to go too quick and to pick smoother lines to prevent any issues.

It’s cheaper to replace tie rods than the steering rack. If you want a steering rack solution 74 Welds billet rack is the ultimate solution for this problem. Imo, ford designed the tie rod to be the weak point for a reason.

Hey @JustinBMcbride, quick question: I’m trying to do a battery bank setup similar to yours, but would like it to be tied in to the Bronco’s battery to help power some of the heavier loads I’d like to run on the aux switches (winch, compressor, lights, etc.)… What are your recommendations? In the Major Tom I noticed you switched from a Dometic 45 to a 55 somewhere along the way, but then put a 45 in Orlando’s. Any specific reason for that? I’m trying to decide between the two. I would prefer the 45, but unsure if there is enough clearance for the lid to be able to stay open by itself. The 55 solves that but is a little overkill for me. You are one of the few I know of that has tried out both in a Bronco so any advice is appreciated.
@JustinBMcBride
@JustinBMcBride Жыл бұрын
The main reason for the 55 in the two door is the lid opening. The rear speaker on the 2 door sits right above the fridge and prevents it from opening fully without sliding out. Sometimes, when just needing to grab something quick, it is more convenient to have the side open of the 55.

From a side profile, it is more understanding. The Bronco windshield has a nice spherical shape which once you get a flat piece of aluminum, it adds that bow. We wanted to offer more function on this to decrease wind noise. We achieved the decreased wind noise and better overall aero dynamics for a Bronco with a roof rack addition. Hope this helps understanding why it is there.

Hey, if you’re the type to DIY something and have a laser cutter, break press, hydraulic press for PEM-hardware, and a powder coat booth, go right ahead. Not to mention having access to the 3D scans of the hard top to design the rack - you already know this since you’re the expert, but Ford doesn’t share that so you’re going to either have to hire a 3D scanner for about $5k for the day, or wait, you are the expert, what am I saying? You already own the $50k 3D scanner. Get after it. I look forward to seeing yours. But hey - after you invest all that time and money into making your roof rack, remember that you can’t sell it to recoup costs because TrailRax holds a patent. All the best on your journey to save a few hundred bucks.

@@JustinBMcBride Dude, relax. I just enjoy building things myself, regardless of the cost. I’m sure it’s a fantastic rack, but also relatively simple in design, which makes it an ideal DIY project. I’m a hobbyist, I don’t mass produce off-road products, and I never claimed to be an “expert”. I don’t need a $50k scanner or hydraulic press. You can cut metal without a plasma cutter, paint without power coat, and have aluminum extrusions delivered to your doorstep… I just stumbled upon your channel, enjoyed the first two videos I watched, and was about to start the third when you replied. I think I’m good now✌🏼. Enjoy the trails.

Isn't the dynamic weight of the Bronco's hard top only 100 lbs?

@@JustinBMcBride So does the TrailRax roof rack change that or is it still restricted to the same dynamic limitation?

@ 5:35 host mentions that the tent and an air mattress is short of the roof’s max capacity. If my math is right, we’re looking at about 10 lbs to spare. However, isn’t anyone supposed to go up there and sleep in it? I’m 6’ 2” and over 200lbs, soooo?

Dynamic load vs dead load. Meaning 110 pound limit at highway speeds. Hopefully you’re not up there while doing 80MPH.

Yeah, they discontinued it for some weird reason. I think it was after they were purchased by Wheel Pros.
